Reds 2022

Politics and a good manager. I’m more interested to see if he even gets a start with UQ. If you watch the game he played for UQ this year you kind of felt that the players weren’t happy to have him there. Earn your keep first.

Whether you rate him as a player or not these are unsubstantiated claims, and you cant say that the players weren't happy to have him there simply by watching.

Impressed by ASY (Angus Scott-Young) on the weekend, his ball running seemed to have improved, which was really the only thing missing in his game. Henry looked good, strong in contact. As much as I am a fan of McReight, Wright looked good in the 7 jersey. With rugby being a game of attrition, having a bigger body on the field offers an intangible value you can't see on a stat card. We all saw what happened against the western force when we played a Loosie in the Lock position. In that game, you couldn't really put your finger on what went wrong, just felt like we lacked something.

You'd get a good few years out of Chibba Hanson I reckon. Mafi is still only 24, by the time Chibs starts to wear down Mafi should be hitting his straps big time with another young guy in development.

I was pleased with Hanson's start to the season but he's been a noticeable step down every time he's come on in the past few games. I think he's near past it.

What a load of crap. Have spoken to Heeno (PRemier Grade Coach) and they are wrapped with him. Blown away with his abilities in fact.

Agreed, I thought ASY (Angus Scott-Young) was immense on the weekend.

It's crazy to think how young the likes of he, LSL (Lukhan Salakaia-Loto) and Wright still are. ASY (Angus Scott-Young) for example turned 24 earlier this year, if he keeps developing at the rate he is could be anything in 2 -3 years time when he hits his prime years.

Interested in their view on his development Reg. Clearly he is highly rated, but he does seem to have been thrown into Super Rugby early and I don’t know he is ready. Did Heenan think he should be playing Prem’s at the moment or do they think he will click soon enough?

I gotta plant my flag in the corner that Kalani Thomas is not up to scratch to be out there in super rugby. Could he develop into a genuine prospect, of course, very talented kid.

The biggest disservice to him is the lack of NRC this season because he is not going to get any meaningful developmental minutes other then off the bench and training with reds.

Why wasn’t this kid named in the Aus u20s squad? Did thorn hold him out of participating or are there better teenagers options in Australia other then Kalani.

It seems like the Reds are going through the tenth iteration of their halfback merry go round since Genia left. I would hope that McDermott is firmly the primary option for the next few years, but with how early they've promoted Kalani and the game time he is getting, I have a feeling the two of them are moreso competing for the spot, rather than a master and apprentice.

Competition for spots is good but geez the Reds have chopped and changed halfback more times than I can count in the last 5 years. It is such a key position where players get used to a particular play style and that synchronization can really help the side.

He was and all the U20’s not making match day squads were named initially and were at the first camp. That included Gordon and Pasitoa. Think Flook and Nonggorr were the only two not at the first camp as they had been named to play.

They weren’t called into the second camp , only the development players who weren’t making the match day squads.

Guessing the uncertain nature of what is happening with the U20’s means they’ve kept them with their Super teams.

BTW , a possible U20’s backline with

9 Thomas
10 Gordon
11 Vaihu
12 Pasitoa
13 Flook
14 Samuela
15 Grealy

Has what some would have seen as a future Reds backline a couple of years ago.

Haven't spoken to Heeno for a while. But the comment was that UQ players 'looked' to not want to be playing with him. What rot.

I am firmly of the belief he is not up to Super Rugby and he showed that in the pre-season trial v the Tahs.

Frisby was looking like he could really develop into something, but his love for Milton Mangos with Chris Lynn seemed to be a high priority for him, or so I was told.

Yeh Frisby was good, but he's also someone who relied solely on his freak ability throughout school and his first few years as a pro. When it came time to grow into his body and work hard, he went missing. His drive to keep playing a high level started to dwindle as he got stuck into the tins as well, as you say.

Bit of a shame really, the bloke is all done professionally. Living back in Brisbane with his wife and their young child, I'm sure he is happy but at only 28 years old you'd think he had a few more seasons in him if he had pushed himself.

I still would have preferred Spencer Jeans at half back .. still do. Interesting enough at the first camp Pasitoa was at flyhalf and Gordon at 12. Gordon’s defence and tackling ability was preferred in the centre’s channel.

Reg, the player’s opinion was not just to do with skill set it was more to do with his cockiness. That is fact.

Would be interested to know whether you’ve got this from watching the one game he has played for UQ this year ? Or from another source?

Kalani has not spent a whole lot of time with the UQ lads, he has been with the Reds for most of the season.

If you are basing it on his one game and the general “vibe” going down on the day , I can tell you it was a poor game by UQ. There were a lot people not happy with the performance, easily their worst of the season. The unhappiness wasn’t specifically directed at Thomas , they just put in a poor shift. They haven’t missed a beat since, but again that has very little to do with who is playing at 9.

It’s probably best that the who said what and when comments about Kalani cease here. The kid was put into a playing environment that is beyond his skill set ATM. Being thrown into the deep and can go either way, and for the sake of his development and his future with the Reds let’s hope it’s on the upward.

Internet decorum is funny isn’t it, it’s ok to post anonymous comments criticising someone else but not ok to put a name against made those comments.

Whether another club player said thst means nothing, who’s to say ‘person x’ isn’t a wanka himself and opinion means little. The way some of you are talking about a 20 year old, and speculating on the way he was selected(politics, manager) and making unsubstantiated comments is pretty sad and unnecessary.

We are all keyboard warriors giving our opinions. Like I said it’s just what I saw and felt. Maybe I’m wrong. Who knows. I just think IMO he should have done his time first. That’s where you determine if he’s up to it. Atm he’s not IMO. Good luck to him.

Is there any talk of a Reds future for Josh Collins from GPS? Have been very impressed by him in the couple of games and highlights I’ve seen this year.
