Reds 2022

That’s actually not correct. The vast majority have been there since grade 8.

Of course the majority - No school brings in over 50% of their athletes on scholarships.

I feel your are addressing a specific team, or specifically that list of players. I'm speaking generally. BBC are very active in the market - not the only school, but from my experience in School Sport, they lean on it a little more, it's more a need then a want.

I have a number of contacts that look after sportspeople. They tell me that all of the GPS schools have some kind of program and that BBC isn’t the most active. Nor the least active.

Great to see the reds aren't resting on their laurels like the pre-Thorn years and are continually blooding, developing, and signing young (Queensland) talent. Big call, but we might be witnessing the start of a new golden era for QLD rugby
The current QRU board under Jeff Miller brought in a KPI of a 80% minimum signing from Qld pathways and QPR.

Probably always would be in that vicinity, but they’ve put it front and centre as a key goal to future success.

Certainly feels like it’s headed in the right direction.

BBC had produced some talented players for a GPS school who has only won one outright premiership.

02 we came mighty close. Big Kev was the captain, also had Will's older brother and Geoff Abrahams aka Quade's laptop mate. From memory, all three made the Australia school boys team.

Honestly, as a BBC old boy, nothing makes me smile more than jealousy from other schools!

You wouldn’t consider LSL (Lukhan Salakaia-Loto) and Mafi as approaching the territory of ‘experienced’?

Good signings, depth in the front row is always critical

I absolutely see LSL (Lukhan Salakaia-Loto) as experienced and Mafi is getting there, but our lineout has struggled the last few years. I'm not really talking about bringing in a star player, more someone at the level of the 23 in the latter half of their career to add an experienced voice to the squad and give us more depth to work with.

Big 3 retention targets left are ASY (Angus Scott-Young), Uru and Wright.

They seem to be announcing the signings by position, let’s hope they’re saving the back row for last.

More re-signings - Zander through to 2023, Asiata and Fotuaika through 2022

https://reds.rugby/news/2021/07/11/...tuaika-and-richie-asiata-sign-for-next-season

Pretty happy with these re-siginings, but would love to see an experienced forward brought in at either lock or hooker, and an experienced back, probably as a utility/fullback replacing Hegarty.

Anymore word on the Hanson rumour?
He has started training with UQ , could just be to keep fit, no idea if he plans on playing.

So from a Reds’ point of view , he’s in Brisbane and at least training.

He certainly would fulfil the "experienced" part of the wish list.:)

Yep - from what I've heard, Steve has made it clear he's a second half specialist to help the guys have a bit of leadership at the back end of games.

When you look at specialist skills in rugby, like lineout throwing, goal kicking etc, I think teams can really benefit from just having guys like Moore around the team teaching skills to a young guy, lineout throwing as a skill can really be improved with proper training. The fact Moore has answered the call to lace the boots up and finish the season is just cream for UQ.

He’s getting more and more minutes, played about 30 on Saturday, that would have nearly killed him 4 weeks ago!

Agree about the benefits of having Moore around for the group. He is big on standards and certainly lets the group know when he thinks they’ve slipped, plus they all listen.

Haha Moore might be a bit too far in that direction, at least as a player.

It does speak to the need for another Hooker option beyond Mafi and Asiata though - part of the reason Moore is running around again for UQ is that Nasser copped a season ending injury. I've yet to be convinced by him as a hooker but it's not out of the realm of possibility that the conversion works, as long as he gets game time in the position. With another club season gone begging and no NRC or equivalent I don't see how he'll be ready for super rugby next year.

Yeah, an injury is never great, Nasser was starting to show the benefit of playing regular minutes at #2 in QPR. The season ending foot injury will make next year all that more difficult for him to press his case in Super Rugby.

He's still only 22, when is he currently contracted to?

EDIT: just has a look at the opening page of this thread and it's 2022.

Yeah, I don't really have a problem with them persisting with him, I just don't see him being much of an option next year if Mafi or Asiata is injured. In that case Hanson becomes ideal - an older player who would only ever be around a year or two so won't get in the way long term, and can potentially offer his experience to Nasser both at Reds and UQ level. That's something Nasser hasn't really had the opportunity to draw on so far either, with BPA and Mafi at stage in their career where'd they need to be more focussed on developing their own game.

Apparently Nasser is a highly athletic player, one of the better forwards in the squad for athleticism, just haven’t seen enough/any of it

It's all about squad balance though isn't it. I imagine whilst they have arguably the best tighthead in world rugby, the Reds are going to persist down the track of having a dominant set piece, I'm not sure they really need the most athletic hooker. I'd rather a bloke who holds down a scrum and nails every lineout throw and isn't to great with ball in hand. Again, TT does some heavy lifting in that department.

For that reason I think the Reds would do well to sign someone like Hansen or an older head to keep things steady at the back end of games.

Watched ASY (Angus Scott-Young) and Wright on the weekend, and both didn’t do themselves any favours. ASY (Angus Scott-Young) is a workhorse and I’d like to see his re-signing but I think Wright and Uru will get the nod. Wallis goes alright and I would mind seeing him kept in the loop.
