Obviously there ain't too much love left for NEWS/Fox on this forum, but just for old times sake, here are their latest financial figures. It demonstrates further that streaming with a large base at lower prices is the way forward over the more traditional subscription models.

It also reinforces how right the decision to move across to Nine / Stan was, copied from News.

We also saw record subscriber growth at Foxtel, where, at the end of June, our paid streaming subscribers
reached over 2 million, an increase year-on-year of 155 percent. That sterling performance has clearly given us much optionality as we consider Foxtel’s future, which is certainly bright, given that revenues rose 33 percent in the Fourth Quarter.

Creative accounting right there, the significant improvement in Q4 revenue was actually due to the exchange rate “ Revenues in the quarter increased $135 million, or 33%, compared with the prior year, of which $85 million, or 21%, was due to the positive impact from foreign currency fluctuations”

Additionally, “adjusted Segment EBITDA declined 46%”

It’s yet to be seen whether they new model of lower prices is actually sustainable for Foxtel long term given the premiums they pay on broadcast rights.

The cynic in me loves this type of marketing BS. COVID has gifted them a captive audience with stuff all else to do. It almost impossible for any broadcaster to go backwards! As for the subscriber part, considering your local Foxtel installer is also in lockdown and cant fit your dish, its internet or bust.

The games in NZ played in the late afternoon have never rated gangbusters in the past. Though would have liked to think they would have rated a little better than it has. If not for the time slot conflicting with things such as the news then I suspect it would have been on 9 proper and would have drawn more eyes.

Wonders aloud from a NZ medium to long term perspective, should NZ play their local NZ matches in prime time Australian time slots.

Questions,

1] Would they get more rating in Australia than would be lost in NZ??????????????/

2] Is helping Australian rugby in the interests of NZ rugby????????????

Activity trying to undermine Aus rugby like they do is not in their best interest either and yeah the potential loss in viewers in Aus with it being at such a poor time is worse than the potential loss in NZ

Kind of wondering aloud why anyone would even think that even a thought? So you would wonder if it a good idea to make it hard to sell tickets to games kicking off at 10pm? Really?
I would rate that post (and Rebel man's reply) as one of the more ridiculous ones I have seen posted.

Lol games in Perth start early to make sure it fits the time for the eastern seaboard. Both the Beijing and Tokyo Olympics had their schedules changed so it suited the TV market. It is the commercial reality of sports. Also the time difference is two hours there is no reason the game can’t start at 8:45 and be broadcast at 6:45 after the news. The game will be done by 10:30, that’s earlier than most AFL games finish and they still can get 80k with the majority of that being families

I think that's actually a pretty good suggestion Rebel, and it could work both ways, start the Australian based matched at 6:45 so its a more palatable time in New Zealand as well.

Games could also start at 2:00 in the afternoon as well....go from 4 to 6 in Australia...

None of those times suit commercial interests though.

7-9 is peak viewing period, broadcasters pay to broadcast the games during that period so any compromise would need to be done to try and have the game in this period.

Prime Time spreads out to 6-11pm more or less though.

My limited understanding is the two peak Prime time for sports in Australia.

1] Friday Night

2] Sunday afternoon 4 to 6.

Sunday afternoon is a highly sort after time slot. It rates higher than Saturday night normally...

Because Eden Park is in a residential area to start with, so have 30-40,000 people coming out of game at 12 is not flash to start with. And so explain why you think it is more important that everyone else changes their time to suit only Australian tv audiences. I sure you will have a reason, but be pleased to hear why.
Makes me question do you really believe that eastern seaboard of Australia is more important then anywhere else

You have to accommodate who you are playing as much as possible. It’s like when the black caps came out to play tests in Aus and we made them play day night in Perth 1-8pm in Perth is 6pm-1am over there. I am fine with Perth hosting day night tests but think you should host them against the Poms and South Africans as it complements there time zones better

I don't think pushing back the game from a 5.05pm to 6:30pm or similar (compared to the 7.45 or 8pm) kick off is going to make enough difference in the ratings to make it a compelling reason to change.

If you start at 8:45 they would be leaving at 10:30 not 12 so let’s stop with the mayo. Imagine how much all you kiwis would sook if we decide to start at 8pm in Perth as it’s best for the fans in the local market. It would be a ridiculous decision

The reality of the situation is as an administration you are obligated to maximise revenue if and 8:40/8:45 kick off is going to increase viewership and tv revenue that NZ also gets a cut of then it’s in your best interest to compromise

Before you start did the Lions go to NZ’s South Island? No as they chose to maximise their revenue by playing it somewhere that more people could go is it fair no but that’s how business works

Also before you sook NZ had to get the Perth tests moved to the third test even though most likely it makes the only game in Australia a dead rubber hurting the commercial opportunities for the game and before you go on about covid Perth has a rolling 7 day average of 0 cases and is further from Sydney than NZ is

Yeap agreed.

3.2 million Australians managed to turn on the telly in 2011 during our semi-final against the same team in the same stadium at 5:45pm AEST - https://www.theroar.com.au/2011/10/17/wallabies-world-cup-exit-pulls-tv-ratings/

It's a moot argument to be had when we aren't being competitive over there, so better to get that sorted before we can make any forms of demands on whats 'better for Australia'.
