I can't be the only person that finds the BBL to be a dopamine-draining no narrative wank
Well, I'm guessing you're not under 18 years of age, in which case, the BBL doesn't really care if you watch it. It's been pretty effective in drawing in a new generation of younger fans and their parents.
Heard talk on the radio about giving it a re-vamp and maybe making it shorter.

A couple of years ago, BBL made the same mistake as Super Rugby, taking a popular comp and lengthening it to the point where mid-season games became meaningless. They seem to have realised that and fixed it now, with the final still in the school holidays. I can't see them making it any shorter than that, though - networks need content.

Pretty much this. The BBL is growing its audience with it. And that audience is very young.

A company called YouGov did a survey over the summer of sporting preferences, small sample size but indicative nonetheless:

I find the stats to be unbelievable.

I know plenty of people who will watch tennis, but not a single one who would rank it above AFL, Rugby League, Soccer or Rugby Union.

This survey seems heavily biased to what is in the News and on TV at the moment.

I wonder if Rugby would overtake tennis if the survey was completed at the end of the French series?

on another note, when did Tennis, , Netball Cricket and Surfing become a code?

Isn't a code a similar sport but a different set of rules?

They just need to be taken with a grain of salt, the survey was conducted this summer so naturally tennis and cricket will feature higher then they are because its at the front of peoples mind. Should be grateful the SRAU GF still features 7 months later.

Cricket is huge in this country…

Tennis is also immensely popular - it appeals to a far broader base… multiple global superstars… we possess the worlds number one female player… the Aus Open is one of the biggest annual sporting events in the country that rakes in the most casual sports viewer … tennis attracts far greater media coverage than this game of ours…

None of this is really surprising.

BBL is played during school holidays mostly, so crowds aren’t too bad. Pretty sure the crowds drop off once school returns
This is the last week; Final is on the weekend, School goes back Monday. Its perfect timing.

We only get a few game played here in CBR, but the ticket prices are pretty good and its a better game day experience than Super Rugby produce which annoys me!

Last year pretty much showed if you have a decent product at a decent price, and a good game day experience you get good crowds even if its all casuals just rolling in to watch the non-local teams play - which were held here due to COVID.

Tennis is popular, but I don't think it is as popular as the survey suggests.

I think tennis is so popular because there is little opposition, this is why the BBL was able to find a market and why AFLW plays when it does, possibly why Super Rugby starts so early.

There is no competition to the game, the other shows on TV are crap in Summer and the broadcast is basically a promo for what is going to be broadcast during the year interrupted by tennis.

Barty is the shining light and deserves her support as she is possibly the best example of a sports star who should be considered a hero.

Barty getting into the open final would pull 3M plus, (Hewitt did 4 but TV audiences have decayed since 2005), but it's all about that times the probability of her making the final, which she's struggled to get to in the past. At $41 that is absolutely worth a punt though, because it will be the 1/2 rated event for the year if she makes it.
Into $11 now with Barty heading to the semis - you’d think if she’s in the final it’ll come into $3ish

Do you have a link for this its very interesting and shows how far AFL has come on in recent years

And it highlights the complete folly of Rugby Unions approach here over the last 20 years, Every problem has always been solved by some possibilty of growth in some far off market, a game of rugby is played in country Z and bingo the next gravy train is discovered.

Up here in QLD the AFL now dwarfs rugby in this state, literally every metric you want to compare. Rugby has spent 20 years ignoring its own back yard, NSW & QLD.

And it all comes back to Super Rugby and the never ending allegiance shown to this competition that has literally destroyed the game in this country as a mainstream sport.

Put $30 on when it was at $41! She's favourite to win, do me a favour and turn on the TV on Sat night!!!
Don't go the early crow! She's still got to make it there, providing she wins tonight, I think you've got a pretty decent shot at a collect, definitely in the top 5. You probably want a three setter, casual fans flicking their televisions to catch the last set. Looking at the other sports in the line-up, I'm guessing they won't payout till after the Melbourne Cup.

Form tells us she'll make it through pretty easily, but pressure situations do funny things to athletes.

Absolutely need a three setter but not a four setter that goes too late because it'll be based off the program average. It'd be a shoe in if the game was on a Sunday afternoon like the Hewitt final (assuming Barty makes the final). I reckon Barty's broad appeal to 25-50 Y.o. women who don't watch much sport may get us over the line, fingers crossed

I always enjoy your detailed content Adam - what's Com/Res, the "legacy" cable/satellite connections?
Same, I'm guessing Commercial/Residential (cable+satellite), and the top Foxtel line is the sum of all the platforms underneath.
Which is a bit misleading, as it's really only Binge and Kayo that are growing, and they would be much cheaper.

To be fair that data is a bit misleading when it comes to support. Like myself for instance I have two Rebels memberships and the last game of there’s I didn’t watch live or on TV would have been 4 odd years back when they were in South Africa. But I would still have test cricket one and probably Aussie Rules ahead as my favourite sport

The crowds are terrible for the bash, they may as well play it at the shield venues
Well all crowds have been decimated during covid. Pre-covid they were still pulling average larger crowds then most Australian super rugby teams
