Super Rugby Rnd 1: Reds v Rebels

Lots of comments about the Rebels not firing in attack, but I actually feel their ruck defence and setup will need the most improvement.

Reds got on the front foot from lots of effective pick and gos in the first half, and surprising a lot of running one off the ruck, Wilson was particularly good there. Tate’s snipes were all quite effective, probably most concerning that he was able to do them from early in the game, not just against a tired pack.

But no Kiwi side has challenged the crusaders for the last 6 years
That's right. I want at least an Aussie side beating all the other 4 NZ franchises, developing great players for the international stage. A runner up would be amazing for Aussie Rugby

Still need to rewatch the broadcast but I was pleasantly surprised with the Reds performance in person. We were ill disciplined and inaccurate as expected but, it wasn't as bad and I really enjoyed the intent we were playing with, particularly in defence. Plenty of glimpses of quality too, so it's clear we've got gears we haven't used. Like others have said Campbell was great and it was good to see Nonggorr get a good bit of game time and start to look comfortable at this level.

The less said about the rebels the better. They were their own worst enemy, both in unforced errors and not taking the points early to get some scoreboard pressure going. Hodge is a real enigma right now, he'd drop a ball cold or put the ball out on the full but than work his arse off and pull out a great play in attempt to make up for it. So clearly talented, hopefully he just needs a game or two to play himself into the season.

Nonggorr (or any Reds backup tighthead) really have to make their minutes count on the field. It’s a tough gig backing up a player who’s likely going to be the top dog in that position for the next 5 years. Taniela is about to be paid big time by RA so I don’t see his minutes going down.

Keen to see how the Reds backline takes shape when Vunivalu returns.

Jock had his best game I think for some time, not often in the past I felt he was a genuine chance of breaking the line often.

Daugunu’s form seems to have fallen significantly, and I say that in the context that he was by no means bad, but not too long ago he looked like scoring off every touch. Maybe it’s because he seems to have less involvements, possibly a tactic with teams not kicking to him as much in open play.

its got to be 12 Paisami and 13 Petaia for mine, assuming Vunivalu gets back to fitness relatively quickly. But we are some way from that it would seem and even Paisami will only be off the bench next week. There'll generally always be an injury somewhere.

Went to the game. Enjoyed it other than the overpriced catering. Takeaway:

3. Angus Gardner the worst Australian referee because he couldn’t play the game himself so every infringement loves to pedantically put the advantage arm out. FFS is anyone reviewing and coaching him? Not doing the game any favours Angus. Let it go!!
I find that a bit harsh. Truth of the matter is that some of the AU players need to clean up elements of their game. I'm not sure he made many wrong calls and to my eye let a few things go as it was already a bit helter skelter/messy, which was hardly Gardner's fault but rather two teams who didn't have it all sorted out with some rain thrown in for good measure.

For example, I don't mind players like McReight getting pinged at this level, because if he is going to make the step up he needs to get it right. I really rate him as a player so I'm keen to see him keep working. Feedback helps. He consistently gets in the right places, now he just needs to be a little more accurate.

If you're arguing it (penalties/advantages) kills the spectacle, well maybe, but have a go at the players not the ref.

That was very similiar to Foote’s comments after the game. Unhappy with the Rebels game management - trying to do too much at their end - and their breakdown work, both in attack and defence.

That and their set price.

Is Vunivalu a former player? Since he switched to Union I heard more about his injures than his performances

He was a super star in league.

When fit, he provides a varied attacking platform that not many teams in Australia have, specifically a great target in the air.

He’s come with a big price tag though, and needs to spend some time on the field to earn that, but when he’s fit he will be good.

Does he? What is it??

He was given an RA top up straight off the bat wasn’t he?? Reported as $900k per season, or am I wrong?

Do you not consider that a big price?

Especially when you consider Taniela being reported as seeking $1M per season on his next deal, which I think is a fair price.

I know it, Im a big fan of NRL. Sorry, mates. He's at the same level of Radradra, Koroibete, Maiko Sivo or Josh Addo Car

Don't hate me, please. I prefer Union by far
