Hi Dusk

What do I know ? Never coached in my life but suggested New select a 1stXV backline that would form the basis of their RD1 team to gain confidance and combinations. Are S.Takuamo and D. Williams injured/resting ? If O.Townsend is fit enough to start 2nds, I think he is fit enough to start 1sts given he is Captain of Rugby and will probably have a run for 1sts during the game. Changes this close to rd1 suggests:
1) players are out of form ( which I don't think they are, I think they are out of position for their skill set )
2) coaches are experimenting ( very risky cause the comp starts in a week and you would think they would settle on a team )
3) injuries ( haven't heard too much )
4) coaches have no idea ( RIPPA !!!)

I hope New get a win tomorrow against Kings. They have had 1 win, 1 draw and 2 losses in trials. Ok draw against a trial Scots team who have improved a lot since, good win against a weak Auggies, and hard losses to Wav and Knox. A New win is important for their mentality.
Not a big fan of the constant changing ( unless absolutely needed injuries/or very poor form ) but players constantly looking over their shoulders about their positions tend to play for themselves/selfish to keep their positions rather than play for their team. Wish coaches understood that. Leave them to sort it out on the pitch. Thoughts ? Rippa we may need your help.

This is not new to the Wyvern Wookies (older hands remember this nickname). It has been their downfall for many seasons. I was fortunate to have a family live a few doors from me who had two sons in the Newington 1st XV. They would complain to me about the changes with hope that it would suddenly click. It never did. I feel for the players and fans who deserve better. Joeys went through this as well one year were they had over 30 boys play in the 1st XV across a season. They performed poorly as a result. I hope Newington sort this nonsense out.

Hi Joker

Agree. It happens too often and is not fair on the players. Why does it happen to Newington Rugby ? The other sports at New are a lot more settled. The coaches use the trials and training to pick a 1st and 2nds team. Not Hard. Unless there are injuries, you don't change. If you lose the odd game or two, you aren't good enough. Play on. Don't stuff the players around. They want to enjoy their rugby. One particular sport at New has done very well in the last decade. Coaches philosophy : If the training and the process for selection is done correctly and is fair and the players undertsand what is expected of them, then the teams will be selected accordingly, without fear or favours, and the team will stay the same throughout the season. Hence a very successful program. Also, they train 2 sessions a week. As mentioned before, at New, the 1st/2nd squad train 6 sessions a week. A lot of these boys also play club outside. This is too much and can cause burn out and injuries. They need to be rested to perform well. Good management leads to good performance. I don't think New coaches etc manage their open squads very well.
Anyway, this group is talented and it will be shame if they don't play as well as they are expected to. If they win the comp, fantastic but at least they should be very competitive. If not, the program should have a good hard look at itself cause this crop of boys were destined since yr 7 for big things, which means that they have been let down by poor management/coaching. Typical form for New rugby of late.

Over training is an issue. Joeys have fewer BUT their players do not play outside club football. Sunday is used for rest and even Mondays on occasions. Injuries mainly occur pre-season as well so you need depth to cover.

Going into the season proper the focus should be combinations and learning playing patterns. By now all the S&C which dominated pre-season has dropped off. Individuals continue to do what they wish in the gym (normally a program designed by the coaches).

A funny aside is that Joeys hands and combinations are also honed on the touch football games they endlessly play.

Joker , ssshhhh, you will let the secret weapon of Joeys rugby out! Nothing better than touch footy on the college ovals with your mates, particularly Friday nights under (dim classroom) lights

We didn't have big lights, so we turned on all the lights in classroom block and played on College A

There is obviously a reason as to why Siteni and Drew are not playing (i.e. injured most likely). With that said, Oliver Townsend (I believe) is most likely waiting out his previous injury to make sure he is 100% ready for the first round of the comp against scots. I also forgot to mention that Jaydon Villaimu (GPS 2nd's 2021) is out for this match which will impact them as well.

Also, i have noticed that Cluch.tv has posted the shore vs scots and Joeys vs View games but not Newington vs Kings? Is there just a simple delay or will this match not be streamed?

This weekend at north parramatta we see kings for the first time we’re a aboriginal inspired jersey, it has been designed by old boys Jordan Williams and Dylan Pietsch. A great design and the players this week have learnt the meanings of the design and jersey itself.

I think at kings their will be some interesting match ups with 1st 2nds 3rds and 16As, both newo and kings 2nd’s teams seem to be the team to beat with both teams undefeated at this point. Both have two very talented 12 this week will be Interesting to see this matchup.
16As I believe e will also be a great game to watch newo have had some new players join this year who are very class rugby players, coming of their first loss to knox last week newo will be out for blood against a very large kings foward pack (taller and bigger then the 1st vx pack according to some coaches and parents) kings backline have had two tough losses due to players playing up in opens though.

some very good footy to watch this weekend overall and will be excited to watch the 3rds round 2 comp As well.
From my understanding 16As at 10, 3rds 12 against tas, 2nds at 2 and first at 3:15

I have a few friends with sons at Newington. Over the past couple of days I have spoken to them about this possibility. While many express that Co-education has benefits, they did not sign up for this. One, who has a son in year 2 at Lindfield, was planning on her son going through k-12 in a boys school. She has now asked me, "how do I get into Shore?" Well I don't know, but pulling an oar will help.

I recall when Barker introduced the ladies. Numbers in the school eventually evened out but the issue was numbers of rugby teams. Pre-Co-ed I recall BC fielding at least 8 teams in the opens and similar numbers lower down. In 2018 Joeys play BC. These were teams they fielded that day.

Opens- 6 teams
16's- 3 teams
15's- 2 teams
14's- 3 teams
13's- 3 teams

Barker 1st XV beat Joeys that day and couple of mismatched graded teams ( Barker A's v Joeys C's etc....) Why did the 1st win though when there are so few boys at the school playing rugby? Simple. It is the word that shall not be mentioned. A word that is disallowed in GPS schools but CAS have no issues as they are allowed do to. Imagine if the BC 1st XV had to rely on home grown talent? The moment you go co-ed you harm the sports programs of the boys. No more depth, no more building, just a few hired guns to prop up the 1st XV and to hell with the rest who will forever play games against teams not their grade. In 2018 Joeys 6ths only played 2 games vs another 6th Grade team (TKS and SIC). It hurts these players as well.

Finally, Newington do have a proud rugby tradition. They may not have won premierships, but they were a hard school to play. They took it seriously. With the rise of the Cult of "Silverbacks" it has taken on a comical form. Boys who can play 2nd/3rd XV grade choosing to play for a novelty team. Thank goodness the Joeys 7ths beat this team in 2021. One of my good friends son' was playing for NC and were expecting to win easily. They lost 10-7. It was a shame that the NC 4th, 3rd and 2nd XV all lost be bigger margins. How will rugby stay competitive?
