What if your AAGPS school was a dog breed....what breed would they be?

Lets get the ball rolling. Here are my picks.

This is an issue for me.

In 2013/2014 I finally completed my Level 3 ARU coaching Accreditation under my mentor Matt Williams. He was at the time working at Knox and part of his ideas discussed below was what he implemented at the Knox Sports Academy. His goal was to coach the coaches on how to "use the cattle they have" rather than use a uniform playing style. Having this blanket playing style is only found in schools were the emphasis is upon ONE team at the top of the pyramid. While it does give the 1st XV success as every student who makes this team has spent years playing this style, it does leave in its wake, a number of kids who were thrashed quite often. I recall one year when Scots 1st XV beat Joeys in spectacular fashion but lost every other game that day. They went 1/19 I think. Why? Because the Dictator of Rugby had decreed every team play the 1st XV style. It was ugly and the coaches found it impossible to keep the kids spirits up.

What Matt and I discussed was as a coach you must work with the kids you have. Sure we all would like big cattle for the forwards and prancing gazelles for the backs, but this does not happen. So what do you do?

1. EVERY PLAYER MUST LEARN TO TACKLE. Defensive skills must be learned properly and not as a 15 minutes at the end of the sesssion. Start with it! Every training session must have at least half that time tackling and learning to hunt in packs (Joeys cattle dog mentality). Why? Because defense is what happens in half of the game. Making a front tackle should be as easy as catching a ball and if taught properly you are half way there.

2. EVERY TEAM MUST PLAY SMARTER., Too much time is spent of learning playing patterns. This is a great plan A but what happens when this fails? Coaches need to coach smart footballers. Kids who will see that what they are doing is failing so lets try something else. Matt would demand of his coaching staff the ability to watch an opposition closely and have three key points to speak of at half time. NO MORE than three. Kinds can take these in. They should be.....where we can defend better, were can attack more and ask them to identify with their units (forwards/backs) what particular aspects they can improve. They OWN the talk. .

3, DRILL MUST REPLICATE GAME PLAY. You want all drills to be completed with same game intensity. In short, you want the kids to train harder than they play. Kids only learn from actual experience and not from a half pace scenario. Sure you build up, but if you take your foot off the gas early you are not teaching them that extra mongrel needed. It was common for the odd bloody nose in my sessions and if a nose was broken, then milkshakes all round the team! It was a reward because they were giving their all.

Directors (and no dictators) of rugby must coach the coaches properly with in school rugby coaching sessions with increased regularity. (Joeys does this well). If you do, then you will find success across the age groups and teams. Don't have a school based style, have a school based mindset to succeed.
Yes agreed with this.

You can still have uniformity in your program, but its in the teaching of core fundamentals in a uniform way that elicits the best results - especially around coach language to players. I have coached rep teams where I spend half my time re-organising a common language for basic players that everyone knows but have 4 or 5 unique names for them. Very frustrating.

Teaching the exact same game plan to every team wouldn't work as some teams simply don't have the skill development or physical prowess to execute it. Rather, teaching each boy that on top of his fundamentals, he will need to learn a scrum move/line out move/restart etc which will reflect the current abilities of the team, rather than the same move for every team.

Good. Many students (and some school staff) read this forum and you need to keep this in mind when posting.

Personally I try to avoid player names when I have something negative to say and even then I couch it in a velvet glove. Some may say we shouldn't sugar coat it but they are young men, who at times, cannot tell the difference between banter and criticism. We are not playing for sheep stations here, unless when Joeys takes on Kings, but even then we leave it up to the pig dogs v the French bulldogs to sort it out.....that gives me an idea.
Hello Joker
I was at a Teacher's, development day, only fairly recently. The course that was being conducted, concerned a teacher's responsibility in addressing students. In other words how Teaching staff should speak to a student in an acceptable manner. That will not get them in trouble. One most notable point, is in reference to naming and talking about a school. Regardless, if its public or private. So years ago, a newspaper, published a picture of a Year 12 HSC group. Most of the students had failed to achieve positive grades. This newspaper, then went for them with a brutal commentary, essentially labelling them as Failures.

Subsequently, the paper was sued and the incident stood out within the teaching profession, as example of what cannot be said in public, on line or by the media.

So the bottom line is, if someone maligns a school or it's students, whether it be academic, sport or general level of behaviour. Its is quite possible, that the school is entitled to seek damages, against an individual or a group. Hence, if someone comes onto this site and starts "slagging off" about a school, potentially, you are putting yourself into a legally precarious situation.

In the past Green & Gold, have had a few certifiable nutters, who under present legislation, would have likely found themselves in court, for a variety of reasons. This includes child abuse. If you abuse a child, about their school, you are setting up yourself, as an individual, for charges pertaining to potential child abuse. The same goes for parents and teachers. If you falsify HSC results on this site, like one individual did some time ago on this site. You have potentially damaged, the teaching staff and their professional reputations.

You cannot simply come on to this site and bad mouth a school. Particularly, if you cannot prove it with factual evidence. In the case of a Independent Schools, whose reputation, enables them to attract students enrolling in it. The potential,is there for an individual to really find themselves, in a great deal of trouble. As these schools operate in 10,000 of thousand dollars per year, per student. A lost of revenue will be taken very seriously, by a school's leadership group.

Therefore, should a student and his family decide withdraw their son, based on some Bullshit Propaganda Campaign. The school concerned, may very well be entitled, to seek damages against, such an individual. One individual attempted this recently, on this site, but seems to now have refrained from making, any further comments. He problarly has saved himself a great deal money, as well as personal humiliation.

Fortunately, the level of commonsense has improved on this site and the Certifiable Nutters, appear to largely disappeared. In so doing Green & Gold has become venue for serious, Professional and Intellectual discussion about Schoolboy Rugby. In fact I would venture to say, it's at the best level, I can remember since I joined, about ten years ago.

Also well done to our Moderators who have overseen, the improvement on this site, well done in establishing these improved standards.

Not a single kings boy ? Have you not watched them this year ?
RNB completely agree - interesting everyone’s picks are limited to the same few boys who surprising like Australian rugby are the same ones year in year out. Kings are a very mobile and quick team across the field with most the forward pack playing like loose forwards. Sorry gone are the days in school boy rugby of the big heavy locks - too heavy to lift, slow, immobile and more often than not get replaced as they can’t cover the field for the full game. Size is not everything at this level - gone are the days when the big unit would break the line as most of these boys have learnt to tackle and the big ones come down hard. i hope the selector keep and open mind and not just look at size. Skill and stamina are fair more effective over the length of a game. Plus they should steer clear of those kids with nrl links to try and encourage kids to stay in the game

Tips Week 6.jpg

For this and every other round (and rep games) I have decided to add the points spread for every game.
When you make your selection you simply add by how much.

Example-

Scots v Newington. I choose Scots +12
Kings v Riverview. I chose Kings +30
Shore v Joeys. I chose Joeys +15

If you "beat the spread" (by being within 5 points OVER the winning margin) you will receive 5 points. A win is still worth 3, a draw is 1.
So every game you can try and predict the spread. MAXIMUM points you can win on a round is 15!

YOU HAVE UNTIL MIDNIGHT FRIDAY 17 JUNE to get your tips in.
If you don't then it is the away team with a points spread of +12

Hey lads,
Wanted to gain you perspective of the 16s state champs this year as I’ve been officaly told finnlay bartlet will be playing for norths in the second row. Just wanted to understand how Scott’s would allow this to happen?

Also very keen to watch 16s state champs I believe it’s a clear 4 way race for the championship with manly, southern districts, norths and two blues.

Lots of 16As gps player spread through two blues, norths, eastwood, manly ,Gordon and possibly Randwick I’ve heard. excited to watch and would like to know if anyone would want updates?
That Norths team is very talented with I think 4 scots 16A's boys plus a player from trinity who has played first's since year 9!

Unless Finlay has played a minimum of 4 club games for one of the Norths feeder clubs he would not be playing. It is impossible to get dispensation as the SJRU needs to provide an incentive for boys to play club. There are loads of GPS boys playing in the 15’s comp as well, districts like Gordon are very healthy, others like Eastwood and Easts are really struggling for numbers
Easts sent a team to state champs in the 14's, they looked quite good and played some good footy but were overpowered by top sides like Gordon and Eastwood. I saw there game against Warringah which ended 5-5 which was a great game. I also saw there day one game against Norths which ended with Norths getting the win at the buzzer. That Easts team has a lot of Scots+Brook boys plus some country boys and other schools in the mix.

He has played 4 games for Mosman I belive. I’m just more surprised scotts will allow a player like finlay to play at state champs. many other schools like kings, joeys and ect when having a year 10 boy in 1s or 2s will not allow this.
I think it's very good that Scots still allow him and others to play club footy even when in 1's and 2's in year 10

My prediction, but Rd 1 still to play

Hey lads
Wanted to gain some opinions on if this first GPS round will shift possible GPS Rep team selections (considering the teams are announced the same night). Would assume only minor changes would occur? or would selectors place larger credit on performance in round games?
