GPS GREMLIN

Stan Wickham (3)
Watching the view vs joeys and shore vs joeys replays.

Mums max jorgo would have to be one of the best fullbacks on earth aged under 18. Future rugby player no doubt but the question is in union or league. What do you all think?

He has so much natural skill but also has a great rugby brain. Very unselfish player who will be the reason Joeys have a great crack at the Prem.
Hey there sam from SCEGS I think Jorgo may be falling down the league route like many superstars coming from GPS schools.

I think Shores first XV next year might be the unusual case of having more year 11s in the team than year 12s.

33% of the GPS 16a STARTING TEAM (5/15) are Scegs boys. 4 forwards 1 back.

Hope to see these boys gain selection into NSW Schools.
Sam, realistically do you think the boys in the straw hats can break the drought and win a GPS game this season?

If he stays in Union, it will be interesting to see if he goes to Sevens for a while as I imagine he would be pretty good at it. It would also give him a shot at the Olympics in 2024.

This is because each year the Joeys cohort has new students arriving. Joeys has a very small year seven (130) and this group have no idea who each other are as there is no Prep School for Joeys, unlike like Newington, Shore, Kings, Scots, Grammar and Riverview. Joeys boys take time to learn the same cohesion and game that those at the previously mentioned school enjoy.

Most schools in the GPS set the cohort number I presume in year seven with only a few turning up later. This was the case at Scots with 200 in year 7. Joeys though sees a steady number each year joining in. In years 10/11 there is a large intake mainly country lads who's parents can only afford the final years of the College Within these large country lads there is always a couple of sprightly lads who have honed their skills upon the red, dusty, western plains of NSW. By the time this cohort graduates there is approximately 200 boys in the group.

Final point.
Here is a league table of schools by students size (does NOT include Prep schools)
Numbers have been rounded up and are taken from old data.

Kings 1800
Newington 1600
Riverview 1350
Shore School 1250
Scots College 1200
Sydney Grammar 1200
Sydney Boys High 1180
St Joseph's 1030 (2022)

So with fewer students Joeys seem to do well. Must be the food.....

But wouldn’t they have played together in local teams (dayboys). I’m presuming most Joeys dayboys come from Mosman Juniors or HH Juniors

Not really, my sons team has 2 boys that played together before Joeys. Funnily enough more of them play club together now, his club team includes about 5 or 6 mates from school.

Too early for predictions on Rd 2 CS.. lets revisit in the week leading up to Rd2, so we know who is in and out of the squads due to the current rep matches...
Totally agree and I hope all the boys stay safe healthy for Round 2 and the rugby season.

Question for Joker or anyone who knows the answer to this question, when was the last time that Newington 1st XV won a game at HH???

good question, Newington may have cursed themselves at HH in 1990 (I think) when they refused to line up in front of the grandstand in the traditional way. They copped an absolute hiding that day, I am sure they must have won since though. Joker?

I thought there was an ‘unofficial’ Joeys prep which took boarders in year 5 and 6. It’s in Ryde or something. I have a few friends my era who went there and then went to Joeys. Also obviously the strong boarding numbers at Joeys don’t do any harm to their cohesion and skills in junior years.

the last year New won the Premiership (2018?). There was a time of 6 years between 2012 and 2018 (I think) when New beat Joeys both home and away.

Not sure what your era is however there was Johnnys back in the 60’s but it closed by the 70’s I think. The early years at Joeys is a bit of random luck, the current 16’s battled in the 13’s and have improved every year, they could well beat Scots and New this year - won’t be easy but they could. The current 15 A’s have never lost a game, over half the team is in the Sydney squad. The current 14’s are similar, lots of wins by big scores….. go figure.

hoping the school children can be kicked of this forum soon, focus on your education lads.
This is an annual issue we have. But not all school kids have been annoying and many actually make good contributions. It is just some that come here to slag off. Their time will be short.

It was called St John the Baptists. It was a boarding school for 7-11 year olds, many came from the bush and had brothers in the big school. It was conducted by the Sisters of St. Joseph. Situated quite near St. Joseph's College in Gladesville Road, Hunter's Hill, this "little brother" of St. Joseph's prepared boys for Primary Final and the State Bursary Examinations. Pupils taught and prepared for examinations in music, singing and verse-speaking. Sporting facilities include tennis, cricket, football.
