Here's some interesting info for you Joker.
My team played against this Joeys age group in the age groups for 4 years, but we didn't play each other in the Opens.
This Joeys age group was the best in the GPS As comp every year, unbeaten for several years. Scots were 2nd.
We couldn't believe they came last in our 1979 Opens year, rumor had it there was division within the team, not a lack of talent.
I also had a few good mates who went to school with us at Waverley Junior school until year 7, then went to Joeys, they had dad's who were Joeys Old Boys, so quite understandable.

Reminds me when Scots put the best number 7 in the country at 12 in 2001 and they lost the game. I recall Scots were camped on the Joeys line and took a scrum 15m out. They should have kicked for the corner as the lineout was unstoppable. They ran a move through the centres but the 12 "fluffed his lines' and Joeys won the ball back. A few moments later a Joeys field goal put them a converted try out of range. Tense game.

Di staso in his hay days was once considered the best #12 in the country and is absolutely unstoppable up the middle.

It was coaching.

There was a new coach, Brother G. Schwager (RIP). He flogged his team in training each week and the team were finding hard to gel being so exhausted. Plenty of talent but by the time they got on the field they were already physically broken.

In 1980 the 1st XV coaches were greatly assisted by the expert guidance and tuition of Mr. John Howard, a former Wallaby forward and old boy, and Mr. Cyril Towers, a former captain of Australia. It was this help that kick started the rugby comeback that culminated in the 1981 team.

interesting trivia @Joker . I didn't know Jake and Cyril had helped out in the early 80's although I do remember some guest appearances from Jake as a forwards coach later in the 80's (during my time). Wasn't Cyril his father in law? That would make for an interesting coaching dynamic!!

Here are the Scots Vs Joeys fixtures for this weekend. Both 14As and the 13As are playing on Joeys main oval. 1XV-4XV are playing on Scots main as well as the 16As.

What on earth do you mean? I am looking forward to seeing the contest between 2 big inside centres.. How is that anti anything??

However now that you have poked the bear, and just for fun ...... If Distasio is as good as you claim then Oscar will need to play well, if Oscar blitz"s him we will forever know your value as a judge of rugby talent. One major challenge the Scots 6 now 12 will face is that shoulder charges are both a) harder to get away with in the centre field, and b) a lot less effective as a means of defence against a fast moving backline.... good luck!

Lucky 13a's, that is probably the first time a 13's team will have been granted the privilege of playing on the hallowed ground, possibly the 14a's as well.

What are the Christison Park fields like? I imagine it is a bit of a downgrade for the 15a's from a Joeys perspective.

Definitely. The Christison park fields are patchy and without grass in some places. Where there is grass it’s often the scratchy type. And there’s potholes in a lot of the field. Overlooking the ocean it’s also very windy which makes for harder kicking.

No doubt a Scots ploy to slow the fast moving Joeys backs and rampaging forwards whilst they have half their cohort at Glengary.

As I said there was no lack of talent.
BTW, Cyril was an old Wave, as was Dave Brown, imagine those 2 as your centre pairing.

Jason Kougellis (Kings 88) won the 100m, 200m and the shot put (and I think maybe the 400m too?).

LOL - I knew that specific Scots team very well

I think one of them ended up playing prop for the Rats Shute Shield team a few years after...

They had a lot of practise doing just that - both within the school, and outside of it; We also played a match against them, with a similar outcome
