Hello All,

I've been a long time follower of the site from the UK, however having seen the recent discussion about TAS I thought I'd sign up and attempt to add some insight.

I did my GAP year at TAS in 2014/15, and coached our U14A rugby team. I can tell you all from experience that travelling down to play the 'big boys' in Sydney was the highlight of the year for all the students. We used to leave Friday morning, stop for food en-route before arriving at the host school in the early evening. The school's put us up in the Sports Halls and were always excellent hosts to both the kids as well as us teachers.

It didn't matter to the boys which XV they were playing, it was about getting the opportunity to "beat Scots" or "beat View" etc.

I remember the trip to Joeys, where my 14's beat the C team, before the whole travelling party watched the 1st XV beat Joey's 3rd's on #1 Oval on their way to a Premiership.

For the boys, these trips to Sydney created memories to last a lifetime.

Thanks for the insight EF, by the sounds of it my empathy has been misplaced.

This really makes my blood boil.

Make no mistake, this was a deliberate act on behalf of the DET to undermine the GPS by wrecking one of it's members from within. They wasted an utter shit tonne of cash setting up sports high schools that have little to any tangible affect on the outcomes of sports kids (Westfields the exception), yet - the one school that did stand a chance of making a difference to the sports careers of it's students - was ruined because of it's history and association to something other than DET head office.

I have nothing but contempt for the DET for what they've done.
Lol relax
.. it’s a selective school, like grammar like James ruse … none of these school are great sporting schools, to say it was a conspiracy to bring down the gps is laughable ..

So is saying state sports schools don’t produce solid athletes, for example endeavour sports high has produced loads of NRL and football players..

individual sport athletes normally spend 50/50 of their time at school and at the AIS and therefore sporting high schools are equipped to accommodate this flexibility.

Confirming that you said only 22 players in opens rugby? Sad if true. It feels like the GPS and CAS might be asleep at the wheel or at least more should be done to create a good rugby experience for High. Big winning and losing margins doesn’t help anyone. It kills the sport.
yes... only 22 players in total. There are only 6 boys from year 12 I believe. It is amazing that the coaching staff can pull a team together. Most players play in positions that are not suited to them. Next year is looking better for numbers however there still won't be enough for two teams.

Well said DaSchmooze, as a former teacher who taught in both Public and Independent systems, you don't have to scratch deep, to discover the hostilely you mentioned.Former Sydney High Principal, Bob Outsider, fought long and hard to keep High's GPS traditions alive. But the DET as you pointed out was determined to destroy these traditions.

As a teacher, I advocated three new subjects for the humanities:- GlobalPolitics
Defence studies
Strategic Studies in the Indo-Pacific
Was interviewed by Robert Stokes, the then Minister of Education. But soon as he left the portfolio, the same mentality that hated Rugby, buried these subjects because, they favoured a " Boys Educational Agenda".

3rd XV Round 6 – 6 August

Premiership Update

We are at the business end of the season with only two rounds to go and the critical match ups will be very exciting.

Joeys (10 points) are undefeated after five rounds and now look to face Riverview this week and then Kings in the final round. Joeys need one more win to guarantee at least a share of the premiership and will be wanting it to be over Riverview this Saturday.

Riverview (8 points) on the other hand cannot afford to lose this week – they must defeat Joeys to remain in contention for the premiership. If they lose on Saturday, they will also lose the chance to share the Col Winden Shield. A win would keep them alive with a final round clash against TAS.

Kings (8 points) are in the box seat - one out and one back. They suffered a single loss to Riverview in Round 3, but have looked impressive since then. They need to beat Scots at home this week before facing Joeys at Hunters Hill in the final round.

Shore (6 points) sit further back with two losses and they meet Grammar this week followed by Scots in the final round. As I have noted previously, they are mathematically a chance to share the premiership if they win both remaining games, but if either Joeys or Kings win on Saturday then that chance is gone.

Grammar (4 points) cannot retain the Col Winden Shield, which they won in 2020, after their close loss to Riverview last Saturday. They play Shore this week and then High in the final round.

Scots (2 points) are well and truly out of contention for the premiership, but they have a chance to upset Kings at North Parramatta this week before finishing the season against Shore in Round 7.

TAS (4 points) and High (0 points) have a week off this week, having played their Round 6 match earlier in the season. TAS plays Riverview in Round 7 while High will finish the season against Grammar.

Match Previews

Riverview v Joeys

What a blockbuster game this will be at Leichhardt Oval with the undefeated Joeys 3rd XV going head to head against Riverview, who are battling to stay in the premiership. If Joeys win, they will end Riverview’s year and guarantee at least a shared premiership. They would love to do that. If Riverview win, they will end Joeys undefeated run and stay in contention for the premiership. They would love to do that. Riverview won the shield in 2018. Joeys won the shield in 2019. This will be another enthralling chapter in the long-standing rivalry between two great schools.
Joeys by 7.

Kings v Scots
If Scots want to do Joeys a favour, then all they have to do is beat Kings at North Parramatta this Saturday. However, I suspect that Kings will have something to say about that. The recent Kings wins against Shore and High were really impressive with a huge number of tries. Scots, however, will not be intimidated by the Kings forwards and will not be backing down in this match. I expect that it will be an open game on the pristine JS White Oval that encourages running rugby, and I think that the home side will do enough to ensure victory.
Kings by 14.

Shore v Grammar
Grammar travel to Northbridge to play Shore who are coming off a big win over TAS in Round 5. Grammar had a close loss to Riverview last week, but cannot be discounted in this fixture and it should be a great game. All reports are that Shore have found some late season form and will be looking to finish on a high with two wins in the final two rounds. I like their chances at home, and I am tipping them to nudge Grammar.
Shore by 5.

High v TAS
This Round 6 competition match was played earlier in the season during the trial matches. TAS were victorious by 50-0 so both teams have the week off this Saturday and will play their final games in Round 7.

Good luck to all players for the second last round

I never said it was to bring it down, just undermine it by tampering with one school. The ideologues who run the DET simply couldn't tolerate one of their own being a part of the GPS system and changed the rules of enrolment to ensure it would be wrecked from within.

Happy to accept your Enedavour Sports comment if you can show me one child who went there who had never played League before going on to get an NRL contract. They don't create. They just take what already exists in the club system, give them a different jersey and call it their own.

Has anyone got the scots 1st and 2nd XV team lists?

Looking forward to a great weekend of rugby this weekend, hopefully the weather holds out. Some great lineups this weekend one of which Shore vs Newington, will be good to see if the Shore boys can back up after there win last Saturday and get over Newington. A few changes have been rumoured, Leo Bassingthwaight out after a knee injury and Ollie Mackellar with an unfortunate shoulder injury. Not sure if this is 100% accurate.
Should be a good one!

Cheers

Oh Yes!

Menzies is an amazing young talent with great size and speed. His skills can do damage.

Watch out Kings, Menzies is coming!!!

Scotts to win convincingly

Yes, I have heard from an old mate of mine who is a teacher at Shore, Bassingthwaighte hasn't trained all week and is looking really doubtful for the game against New. Huge Loss for Shore. Apparently Pin is shifting to #12 with Howarth coming up from the 2nds to play #10, a beautiful kicker of the ball and attractive young man. #14 Mackellar is out for the season and Ginga Wilson will look to be disruptive in his debut in the #14 jersey for Shore. Mate you can say the exact same thing about rugby union at private schools … let’s be honest most kids who play at gps /cas schools stated at local clubs first. That’s why there is huuuge drop off at club rugby @ around the u/13s . if you come from a “rugby family” and live in a “rugby Area” you played club rugby along with school ..

The Shore squad are looking dangerous, Ginga Wilson will be damaging ball runner and shows shades of junior paulo and mika sivo in his game play, he will damge the newington wingers leaving them begging for mercy, in a close game Shore shall win.

Yep - absolutely. Of course you can. I'm glad we agree.

However there is evidence of kids being introduced to Rugby at school, played it only at school and going on to professional contracts post school. There is zero evidence of this in sports high schools.

I agree with your point about the Demise of SBHS and I agree that it definitely got pushed down the hill faster by the DET.

I would say it's hard to have a go at a sport high school about not introducing anyone to a new sport. You assume most students have enrolled at the sports high because they are considered talented at a specific sport already. It would be rare to adopt a new activity when you are already identified in another.

If I recall correctly. Will Skelton was suggested to play Rugby whilst at a sports high by the Rugby League coaches.

RA should be talent Identifying kids that may suit the sport.

Yes agreed, The reason for many attending a sports high school in first place is you have sporting potential- agreed

it’s pretty much the same going to say joeys or kings

just like you go the sbh or grammar with academic potential.. Now contrary to what most people think… these school don’t “introduce or create academic excellent kids” .. they nurture what’s already there (most of these kids have been tutored since birth )

So yes, now and then you might get the odd kid who picks up rugby @ year 11 and makes the first, but he’s normally a 6’11 genetic freak who slots into the second row .. but for the majority of kids at public or private “sporting schools” they’ve had obvious sporting talent from a very young age, way before attending a GPS school …and these school are the best environment for this talent
