Refereeing decisions

I not sure if I should mention this here as it not a decision.
But NZR will have upset a few who think we shouldn't know who ref is etc in tests, and have actually presented caps to all international refs from NZ mlae or female in a big luncheon on Friday, also found family members of deceased refs. I like it myself.
I like it too. It's a tough gig at any level, let alone officiating tests, that involves quite a lot of sacrifice along the way which should be recognised.

I thought it was a great initiative

Did anyone who attended the Brumbies v Tahs trial last weekend pick up the vibe of these changes?

“ using last Saturday's practice match against the NSW Waratahs to trial shot clocks; 30-second for scrums and lineouts, 60 seconds for penaltys and 90 seconds for conversions.”

Check post 3214 above. (Assuming you're reading my posts Reg, but otherwise, "I don't give a damn").

Could we adapt the system used in basketball where they have personal & team fouls? A player who concedes "x" penalties fouls out but can be replaced; and once a team concedes "y" penalties in a half every subsequent penalty is an opposition shot at goal on the offenders 22 (no scrum or tap option). Cards for foul play only incl 20-min Red.
Love the lateral thinking. Problem with that is that is if every player gets that allowance then it will be manipulated as it is in basketball with “deliberate” fouling. We could get “hack a Shaq” situations to stop scoring etc. without an immediate harsh sanction.

‘Forced me to make it’: Ref breaks silence and not backing down after ‘ridiculous’ Wallabies call
Referee Mathieu Raynal said on Monday he took “100% responsibility” for the disputed decision at the end of this month’s first Test between the Wallabies and All Blacks.

Frenchman Raynal penalised Wallabies fly-half Bernard Foley in Bledisloe I for time wasting in the final minute of their defeat to the All Blacks in Melbourne.

The hosts led by three points before conceding a late try to lose the opening Bledisloe Cup fixture.

“I take total responsibility for what I did, 100%,” Raynal told reporters after being named French rugby’s referee of the season.

“I had a necessary reason for making the decision even if it was a strong one which caused people to talk.

“I try to do what is the most fair. That’s at the heart of my job.

“Sometimes it creates tensions, frustrations, arguments but I take responsibility over what I do,” the 41-year-old added.

Veteran Foley said after the game he did not waste time claiming he was unable to hear Raynal’s on-field instructions at the 56,000-capacity Marvel Stadium.

“I told a player five times to kick the ball to touch. I couldn’t do otherwise,” Raynal said.

“It’s not me who decided to make the decision, it was the player who forced me to make it,” he added.

The decision led to global headlines, with two-time World Cup-winner Tim Horan labelling the call a “disgrace” while Wallabies great Matt Giteau said it was the “worst call” he had seen.

Australia coach Dave Rennie slammed the decision saying he had “never seen a call like that, at any level”.

Later, at his team announcement for Bledisloe II, Rennie said World Rugby “agreed” with their concerns.

But Raynal did not back away from his decision, saying he an “honest” discussion with the Australian coach.

“I had a discussion with him which was very sincere and honest,” Raynal said.

“He was satisfied by the refereeing during the entirety of the match. Obviously we didn’t agree on the final decision.

“I can guarantee we had a calm conversation,” he added.

So while WR (World Rugby) reached out to Rennie and agreed with his concerns/ complaint, this arrogant French twat couldn't even apologise for his shite decision... Instead, making all matter of excuses for his actions in this article - we are all going to get royally fucked by Refs/ TMOs moving forward...
Can you link to something where WR (World Rugby) has come out agreeing with Rennie?

I was watching a replay of Boks/Pumas game yesterday, and I still trying to work out how Esteben was YCed by Murphy for the push that had a snooker ball effect and someone hit the player in the air. The Puma player run a blocking line, he was chasing ball and pushed him out of way (not in direction of the catcher even) and the pinball effect of player banging into each other resulted in last one knocking over the catcher as he came to ground. It seemed a fairly strange decision to me. I guess I have to put it down to ref knows more than me, and whole game was somewhat a messy affair with number of penalties and penalty tries etc.

Wonder ir WR (World Rugby) can take note, just said it on match forum, but I watching Auckland /Taranaki NPC game, we at oranges and not one TMO interference, seems ref is quite capable of making decisions etc.

I said it at the time but it sounds like bs from Rennie.

I do acknowledge it's possible WR (World Rugby) privately told Rennie/RA the call was wrong but won't say so publicly which is fair enough.

Watched my first league game in quite sometime. Really shows that refereeing is a struggle in all sports (even ones as simple as league) and the influence of the video ref/TMO hasn't been correctly worked out either.

Ditto. My main observations are that head contact doesn’t seem to matter unless it is thought to be intentional, the video refs make mistakes but they make them quickly, the game itself is tedious but the players are superb athletes with exceptional skills.

On the weekend Aussie Meafou decided to copy his colleague Richie Arnold at Toulouse and get red carded for head high tackle. Salakai-Loto also gets yellow carded in a similar effort. Me thinks these tackle laws are height-ist.

Watching Newcastle v Bristol, Luke Pearce has blown against Bristol's 9 twice in the first 15 minutes already for taking too long. Awarding short arms to Newcastle each time. Good to see.
Yep Dc, Luke Pearce is a ref I pretty keen on , and doesn't let time wasting happen normally.

I watched Aotearoa rugby pod last night, and Ben O'Keefe was a guest on it found it incredibly interesting. One or two things talked about, he would love for refs to be able to come on tv and explain why decisions were made etc, he reckons if you could do it on say a Wednesday aftr a game would be good after refs have done own review etc, and seen a replay etc. Also talked how most refs have their own blueprint of how they ref, what they looking for etc and says you need it for when pressure goes on in tight games etc. Also when asked if he studies teams he has coming up so he has idea of where they tend to infirnge, he says you have to know how each team plays, but never to see how they infringe etc, as your mind would be too cluttered, more he watches how teams play and gave example , the Highlanders when they play have an awful lot of moves off back of lineout, so you need to be aware and try to stand deeper or in a different spot to keep out of way.
Also was saying he doesn't mind idea of clocks etc for kicks at goals, but noted in URC (I think) where they use it, goalkickers are actually making sure they use all the time ie waiting until clock ticks over to 80 secs before starting run in on conversion etc.
May even watch it again as I have it recorded.
I will add and WOB will no doubt back me up, when he starts his guest apperance by saying 'I coming to you from the Mighty Nua" he has got full attention anyway!;):D

Also when asked about players who know the laws best and keep you on toes a bit, he laughed and said TJ Perenara, and said as he now works with Canes he been expalining even more to him so is relieved he won't have to ref him next year. :D :D
And being serious he said in test rugby Micheal Hooper and Johnny Sexton were the 2 who came to mind and were good to work with.
