CAS Rugby 2023

How good is the U16 Gen Blue cohort. Bench came on and they didn't skip a beat. Very exciting talent coming through in this age group.

Highlights for those without Stan Sport.

A few to watch in the future IMO.

Zion Poita out of Waverley (2nd rower/6/8) I believe is a real powerhouse, would benefit him to learn to better control his temperament, however. Loses track of the game sometimes out of frustration.

The 12 Joe Walsh out of Auggies is just a pure footballer. Fancy footwork, good fend, vision of a fly-half, speed, skill, controls the game. IMO the best player in the entire u16's comp. If he puts some size on he will be one to watch in the future.

Tylan Berryman at fullback out of Narrabeen Sports High is a counter-attacking specialist. Really dynamic out there and has the ability to beat his man with ease and unleash his wingers.

Leo Jaques out of Scots. Outside Centre. Is a hard ball runner, breaks tackles, he's skilled, and seems to have that ability to be in the right place at the right time.

Zach Fittler out of Scots. Size. Speed. Skill. He understands the game. Shame we will probably lose him to league. Him and Jaques are going to be a dangerous centre pairing in the GPS.

We know about Charlie Poynton.

Alex Conti, fly-half out of Patties is classy too.

Could legitimately write about just about every player. There is no weaknesses in this team.

Should make for good CAS / GPS / ISA comps for the next couple of years - real talent in all associations. Walsh, Conti and Woods in the ISA backline will be very tricky.

Be interesting to see if the St Pats boys stay at St Pats.

I happened to be sitting in the grandstand last year and got chatting to the guy next to meet, who turned out was Woods' dad. Very down to earth and wasn't interested in the offers that were coming in from other schools.

I guess when you make the NSW U16 union team, City U16 league team and AFL All Australian U16 team then you are well and truly 'on the radar' and don't need to move school to get 'better' opportunities!

Wow really? What an outstanding athlete! It's safe to say he's bound for professional sport and having 3 different options must be one hell of a feeling!

I totally agree, just watching this teams gritty defence and flashy attack, the talent in this age cohort is second to none. I mean they belted the presumably biggest rivals (the Reds) by 30+. I am intrigued to see what happens the current u16 age group over the coming years, very deep class of players all with the necessary talent to take it somewhere seriously.

it’s amazing the depth this age group has, they’ve changed the team almost every game and haven’t skipped a beat. What’s most exciting is how many different schools this team comes from, 2023 will be a very interesting competition for all the competitions

To add to RoD, here is the reality of scholarships at every school.
Knox —> 2 swimming for every year. (12)
Trinity —> Numerous athletics and basketball scholarships (10+)
Cranbrook —> Cricket
Waverley —> Rugby (Still occurs)
As we can see from the first 3 schools those who import win. However as you many note they are for sports that people may not be as interested in…
That is 100% wrong re Knox swimming. In fact it is laughably absurd. The Knox swim program does have a couple of swimmers on benefit (the same as Trinity and Barker and Cranbrook) but the swim program is exactly that, a great program built over years with great coaches.

The teams for the world schools festival in Thailand have been announced. It’s no surprise that no Australian teams will be taking part but some of the major NZ, SA and British teams will be playing such as grey college and Hamilton boys

Shame no one going. Grey, Hamilton, Millfield, Sedbergh - elite group. Would have been interesting to watch Barker, Joeys, Nudgee etc against them. Maybe next year.

Heard that Gen Blue 16s prop Harper Strawn is on his way to Knox next year.

given that both knox props made Australian schools A team this year, will Harper make the first xv? If not he will do well in the seconds. Solid player and great scrummager

He looked good in the Nat championship games. If true that would give Knox some serious depth up front.
