TT plays a very specific position where weight isn’t the benchmark but probably more of BMI rating is the issue.

I wouldn’t be surprised if RA has advised him to keep his mass. If Kerevi or Cooper turned up to a rehab session 20kg overweight then I would be concerned.

Mate you are kidding yourself if you don't think weight management is an essential part of a front rowers routine.

Particularly when Tupou's explosiveness is a key part of his gameplay. Hard to maintain that energy, especially playing top level rugby when you're running around overweight.

I do think there has been too much narrative around this. I've heard he's ballooned, he's admitted hes big, he's got a couple of months to get it off. Probably no need to keep up the analysis until after we see what he's like at fighting weight for Brothers later this year.

of course weight management is essential but I pointed to the term BMI is what we should be looking at (even then still doesn’t paint the best picture of one’s fitness)

saying someone is out of shape because they are 150kg… not really painting the best picture of facts.

Off topic : but go have a look at the before and after photos of a retired offensive linemen in the NFL. They purposely told to keep the mass but moment they retire they look skinny like they just got out of chemo treatment or something

I would have thought that it was really unlikely that part of the return to play strategy for Tupou on the comeback from an Achilles rupture would be to play at a higher body weight than he was at prior to injury.

Obviously he's been able to do a lot of upper body weight work in particular but it would also seem unlikely to me that he has added a lot of muscle mass during his recovery. I'd imagine someone with his frame has to maintain a fair amount of strength work just to avoid losing muscle bulk.

doing cardio without the use of your legs to burn calories and keep trimmed down is really difficult.

What machines can you use at a gym to burn calories (other than weights)?

the rowing machine and the epilepsy cross country skier machine is about it.

Is the stationary cycle ok to use before running with an an Achilles injury?

Anyhow I hope he comes back to his dominating form and I have no issues with his current weight (it will melt off - moment his allowed to commence running) - We could really use him in France.

Sorry guys. Might of gotten a bit too invested in the S&C chat…

PSA: I am not a S&C coach but weight training & dieting is a bit of a side passion for me.

rugby is a sport for ppl of all shapes and sizes and I belief in this circumstance with TT that he fits into the “all shapes and sizes but with a unique rehab plan”

Tupou would have been provided with a complete rehab program including diet and nutritional requirements broken down by meal reflecting his rehab limitations, I'd be surprised if they didn't have a nutritionist touching base with him routinely given his propensity to pack on weight in the off-season, none of this planning would have included him blowing out to 150kg.

He is overweight and he has admitted previously his diet is an issue for him, doesn't mean he wont be fit by the RWC, it was always going to be a stretch for him, but it has made his journey back to playing rugby that little bit harder.

Do you understand the BMI calculation? If you're only looking at an individual (e.g. TT), there is effectively no difference in measuring weight or BMI. I'm sure TT's height isn't changing, so any change in BMI is in direct proportion to any change in weight

Not too surprising given the Force are apparently chasing Donaldson.
Pretty happy about this - I've been liking O'Connor at 12, and it'd be great developmentally for Lynagh to sit inside him.

The Reds are heavy on centres though, even if they're all injured at the minute...
