3rd XV Round 2 – 3 June
Round 1 gave us early insight in who will be challenging for the shield in 2023. Wins for Riverview, Scots, Shore and Grammar were an excellent start to the season while Kings, Joeys, TAS and High have work to do after first round losses. Round 2 has a couple of clear favourites and potentially a couple of very close matches.

Riverview 3rd XV v Grammar 1st XV
It will be a great top-of-the-table clash at Leichhardt Oval this Saturday so there should be a big crowd on hand to watch a great game of rugby. Riverview had a big win over TAS last week in Armidale for a great start to their season and they will want to continue that run here.
Grammar also opened their account last week with a hard fought 11-10 victory over Joeys at Rushcutters Bay. They showed that they will be contenders for the shield this year with a strong forward game and plenty of speed out wide. It's almost impossible to pick a winner here but I think Riverview may just have the edge. Sure to be a great contest.
Riverview by 2.

Joeys 3rd XV v Shore 3rd XV
This match is a replay of the final trial at Northbridge two weeks ago which Joeys won 27-10 after the match was locked 10-10 in the second half. Joeys will know that they have to win this after their 1 point loss to Grammar last week. No question. A second loss in two rounds would almost certainly put them out of the premiership race. They match is at Hunters Hill so they would be confident of a good result.
Shore opened the season with a good win over High at Northbridge last week and have signalled that they are well and truly in this competition, but will need to produce their best at Hunters Hill to make it two wins in a row. With Joeys 1sts and 2nds playing at Leichhardt, this is a 10:00am fixture on Joeys No 1 field with a smaller crowd, but INP will be there for sure.
Joeys by 5.

Scots 3rd XV v TAS 1st XV
Scots will be riding high after their convincing 20-0 first round win over Kings last week. Even though they lost a few trials, Scots have moved into premiership calculations with that confident win over the defending co-premiers. Expect more of the same this week.
TAS suffered a big loss at home to the visiting Riverview side after having beaten High the week before. They travel to Sydney now to take on Scots at Bellevue Hill and they will have a tough job against the competition front-runners, but they will have learnt a lot from the Riverview match and will be keen to improve.
Scots by 10.

Kings 3rd XV v High 1st XV
Kings suffered a significant and unexpected loss last week going down to Scots by 20-0 at Bellevue Hill. Rumour is that a long injury list impacted the team, but they will have to rebound quickly against an improving High side at Gowan Brae if they are to stay in touch with the competition leaders. The rejuvenated High side travels to North Parramatta off the back of a couple of good efforts against TAS and Shore. They have demonstrated that they can score points and cannot be taken lightly. This will be another stern test for them, but I think they are shaping up to cause a few teams trouble this year and will only get better as the season goes on.
Kings by 7.

Good luck to all the teams and players for Round 2.

joeys have the largest crowds the reason being they are forced to go
Just to enlighten you...Joeys makes it very, very clear in the pre-enrolment and the enrolment interview that winter Saturdays are compulsory. No one is forcing the parents to sign up. They do so willingly as it is part of tradition and culture. There is no hidden surprise and no one is forcing kids to attend.

You also must factor in the old boys, parents, staff and even outsiders who just want to watch good rugby, with great atmosphere and eat a damn good BBQ.

Hope that corrects your comment

Yes the 1800 probably includes Regis campus. Wikipedia says Joeys caters for 2000 boys because from a catering perspective every boy eats two meals :)
Half the school eat three.
Then there meals for the two staff...teaching and ancillary (boarding/sporting)

To be fair, I’d say both kings have set the standard for passion and creative war cry’s this year … Joeys while always intimidating, their war cry’s have become a bit stale and robotic like
Its called the "North Korea" model.

In other words, attendance is a feature not a bug. I know people who send their sons to Joeys because of this requirement. The community spirit it fosters amongst students, parents and faculty is awesome.

not sure about day boy/boarder split but they've got around 1900
I think that is if you include the prep school. the kid next door reckons there is about 210 in Year 10 at Scots. There is also about 100 playing rugby (U16s). Also of the 100 about 20 injured players at the moment in 16s.

Joeys has been described not as school but as a "lifestyle"
There is a member on here who attended school at another AAGPS school but chose to have his sons educated at Joeys for the reason you explained.

There are no soccer boys, just Joeys boys.
Fun fact, in 2022 Joeys won the rugby, football and debating.
Everyone of these groups were celebrated with the same enthusiasm at the Winter Sports Rally.

And others who I know who were at Joeys, have sent their sons to other AAGPS schools.

Little known fact but it was a prominent View family that accidently funded the building of the Joeys Gulag. Humphrey Oxenham a wealthy businessman living at Randwick in an impressive abode overlooking the racecourse, had many successful racehorses over the years, including Melbourne Cup winners. He also won the 1886 Sydney Cup and donated 15,000 pounds to his local Randwick parish (Stairway to Heaven etc).. And it was being run by the Marist brothers, they diverted the donation to the building of the Gulag. As an acknowledgment to Mr Oxenham's generosity, the school took on the families "silks" colours and name of the 1886 Cup winner which was... drum roll please... "Cerise & Blue" aka Pink & Blue.. Just Jokering INP... but also, not.

Needless to say, all the Oxenhams from Humphrey's sons - to the current generation have all attended Riverview.

The argument of school culture does make me laugh.

joeys have the largest crowds the reason being they are forced to go. No doubt they would still attract big crowds but you can’t compare schools like kings and view to joeys due to the fact that not even all home games are compulsory for the school.

view this year have been great in attendance at home and away games and it should be noted, great job boys !

kings have crowds no matter home or away, the boys are doing a great job and so is the war cry captain for this year who is also a elite cricket player. I believe the school took the foot of the petal and the view boys were hoping to cause an upset so the school and the boys published the attendance and seemed to almost catch kings out.
Yes, the thing I find interesting is that View and Joeys supporters think their rugby culture or ‘lifestyle’ is somehow different and better.

I have heard this little tale in the past. Nice story, but that is all that is a coincidence.
The colours of cerise and blue were given by the Headmaster Br Emilian based on his school in France in 1882.

Yes and no. It is different, Joeys and Riverview have a mutual respect that goes deeper than their rivalry, whilst known for their hatred towards each other they know they have a very similar culture. For 12-13 weeks of the school year both schools are consumed by rugby; play rugby, talk rugby, support rugby, watch rugby. And as such it is different to other GPS schools, and subsequently, majority of old boys and students alike think it is better, a better 'lifestyle' than any other school could produce.

How goods that?

hope the bloke can stay calm making his debut infront of that big of a crowd
I agree it is always good to see a young fella make his debut. No more important game than against Joeys, and being at Leichhardt should just add that extra intensity. Sure hope he is up for it.

I back View 1sts and 2nds tomorrow and I am keen to try the meat pies from Leichhardt.
Give a review.

I shall not be attending as this game should be played at Riverview and not some local thugby league ground that has NO school atmosphere. The school is denying their own year 12 boys a chance to play the old enemy for a final time on their home soil, not some rent-a-venue.

Give me the tree lined amphitheater of Lane Cove, the cars parked on the hill, the fanatical View supporters, the Cerise & Blue Army, fathers at the BBQ, the sneaky beers in the car boot and the smiling mums at the canteen. This is what it is all about.....tradition and family.

Yeah, you are free to believe what you will, I'll go with the Oxenhams written family history, they have it documented. The ones I have met are all great blokes, all in various professions and were contributing to higher sporting teams/crews at View in my generation and previous generations, according to my Dad.
