Wallabies 2024

ok EDDIE - ageist.
You really think JOC (James O'Connor) is wallaby material, last year v England in the 2nd test he was poor and on the 2021 spring tour

He's 33 so slim chance of being able to play in 2027, something we also need to consider of playing guys like Slipper, White etc. in the next two years if they won't be playing the next WC

Ahh. Back on the Wallabies discussion. I agree about both O'Connor and White in relation to the Wallabies for 2025/7 but Slipper is a bit like red wine. He has matured and just might make it through to the Lions tour at least. Hard to see him being displaced in two years by those coming through the ranks at the moment.

Slipper is looking like every bit of those 134 Tests now. He has over 300 professional games in the Front Row which is phenomenal.

I think the fact he’s at the Brumbies can help him get to 2025. He doesn’t have to start every game with Schoupp there and it helps develop him.

While he looks weathered, someone has to take his spot and not just move on from him because of age.

Don't know about that BR. I'm a huge Slipper fan, but in two years he'll be 36, and young LHP's like Schoupp and Lambert are going to keep improving. You may be right, but two more seasons should see a lot of development in these young props
I hope you're right Froggy, and I'd even put Jack Barratt in the mix, especially for post 2025.

I said he was a wallaby - which is accurate. This was a side (and very off topic) discussion about which capped wallaby should be dropped from the starting Reds XV in order to accommodate Lynagh or HMP, not a suggestion of which capped wallaby in the Reds should be selected as a wallaby in 2024.

BUT to be back on point and to directly address your response- Waugh has stated loudly and clearly he is much more interested in winning games BETWEEN world cups.

THEREFORE if the primary goal is to win games, and the secondary is to win WC's, then whether or not a player will likely ' be around' for the 2027 world cup, is a secondary consideration in 2024, to that of whether or not a player can increase the likelihood of winning games in 2024.

QC (Quade Cooper) just posted a social of his fractured cheekbone from the club game just played in Japan.

With Eddie gone he may have been a shout to make a Wallabies squad in 2024 but I imagine he will be out of action now for at least 6-10 weeks until any contact.

At 36 years old next year it might be time to call it curtains.

No way was he a shout for 2024, he'd be no chance of making it to the next WC and if for some stupid reason he was picked then we wouldn't of learned

If we took the time to develop guys like CG and ensure they are around 40 caps by the time 2027 rolls around then we wouldn't be in a postition having to go back to rejects like Quade or Foley

I have faith Carter will continue to improve a lot

Quade was not the answer for this WC or ever in the future, Barrett, McKenzie, Mounga'a, Farrell, Ford, Smith, Sopoanga, Russell, Bigger, Sexton, Anscombe, Pollard, Libbock, Willemse, Ntamack etc. (and Im sure I've missed a few) are all much better than Quade

Can't believe people thought he should've been in the WC squad

That you McLennan? Its the sort of dopey rewrite of history he'd want to try.

The question was not "which world class 10 could we select?", it was "Who is the best Australian 10 available?" Cooper, Foley and Gordon were probably the best performed, though the pool to choose from was weak. Over an eight week period, Jones chose three different ones - Cooper, Gordon and then Donaldson. Basically, he didn't have any idea who was best and ended up picking the worst performed one in Super, probably because he played for Randwick and wouldn't give him any backchat. And Jones was McLennan's captains choice to select and manage the team.

I don't expect Cooper to be in the squad next year, we have to rebuild, but that doesn't mean he was not one of the best two available this year. Our 10's next year should be Gordon plus the next best Australian 10 on show in Super. What our 10's do need is a decent backs coach who can develop their game to the level required and a decent head coach who is capable of instituting a proper, well designed gameplan and drilling the players to play to it.

This constant revising of history just does my head in. We all saw what happened this year. The constant changing of personnel (coaching and playing) because the head coach had absolutely no idea of what he was doing was the root cause of the disaster. And Jones was McLennan's personal choice to run the team. There! I've just written the first two sentences of the World Cup review. In 2024 we have to start afresh to build a team (coaching and playing) to get our credibility back.

Not sure Jones had no idea what he was doing, his record would suggest that wasn't the case. It always seemed likely to me his ego and narscissism meant he wanted to go against convention, sort of 'look at me, I do everything differently than everyone else because I am so clever, when I succeed everyone will think I'm a genius'. Trouble is, everyone else does those things for a good reason, he didn't succeed he failed miserably, so he wanders off to Japan blaming everyone else.

He can't arrest things once they are going off the rails. If anything he doubles down. It's happened everywhere he's been.

Anyways, enough Eddie. He's got nothing to do with the Wallabies 2024 (scars sure).

Who debuts this year? I Think we'll see Flook going on last years performances. Anyone got a potential Bolter for a jersey?

I’m expecting we may see a number of props and hookers given a run through in the next 12 months.

Taniela, AAA and Bell clearly our best international standard choices. Unfortunately also been on the injured list far too often.

Hooker has me stumped. Can’t see us winning anything of significance with Porecki our first choice. I’m keen to see what Mafi can do for the Rebels, looks fit and is getting a full preseason and still very young for a bloke who will be close to 100 super caps when the season ends.

Everyone forgets our best hooker overseas Brandon Paenga amosa

Mafi is a good call. I think Pollard can push himself into the top 3 Hookers with game time and fitness.

BPA can't get back soon enough. Porecki is fine but that's just it. Fine, not elite.

Toole and Jorgensen are both a pretty good chance of a debut I think, wouldn't be surprised to see one of the uncapped young tens get a chance either, but it's pretty open at the moment.

There may well be a few more when it's all said and done too, I have a feeling selection is going to be pretty open and really driven off super rugby form given we've already have a bit of a clean out.

Josh Canham. Had a good season last year, very tall but could do with a couple of more kgs. With a number of 2nd rowers moving on we need to bring a few more through and he reminds me of Courtney Laws.
