Have an ineffective front row you will struggle at the breakdown, scrum, maul etc. Players take time yo mature into the position, neednthose old wise heads around to help with the dark arts of tight 5 forward play

Agree - but the only super team that doesn’t have any real old heads at the moment is NSW and Bell & HJH (Harry Johnson-Holmes), along with Porecki, do now have a decent body of work behind them. I’m sure they’d like a bit more depth but Thompson-Stringer and Ross aren’t rookies.

Force are in a hard spot but that’s mainly due to injury and I believe they get Robertson back next year.

Fair enough - I'd have to go watch it again.

Without getting too much into it, and noting it's not apples to apples, this decision and the contrast to the Lynagh late hit pose some questions about the dangerous tackle framework.
Yep, so annoying!

was called by the TMO to the ref as "just a head clash" in the game.

No-one was hurt & they played on.

Lynagh gets monstered in a deliberate late hit & they don't even take a look

Is the hit on Tom Lynagh more than a penalty? It is late but it isn't high. I don't think it is egregiously late that it would be considered for a yellow card. I think there's enough of a wrap to suggest that the tackler has used arms in the tackle.

Tackle is at 35:05 for those playing at home. I think he was a little bit unlucky as the ball carrier stepped away from Nongorr and into Fa'agasse, but it was probably not just late enough to be a "sudden" change in direction

It was late enough and with a high enough level of force to warrant a yellow imo - replays showed Finau hadn't committed until after the ball was passed. The wrap was borderline but agree that he did just enough.

Yeah watching it again it's probably a fair call. Sef's positioning was poor and ran the risk of shoulder-to-head even if the ballcarrier hadn't changed his line

Sucks for Sef and the reds - but I’d rather these kind of things be dealt with after the game at a judiciary as opposed to on the big screen with a red card ready to go.

RL is great, referee says on report & play on and the game isn’t interrupted (unless it’s blatant) our game is being ruined by ppl like Angus Gardener & some TMOs who love sound of their own voice, quick drinks break so they can review the footage on big screen.

Watching that section of play trying to find when the red card tackle was - it was pretty evident just how often the Reds were having to make their front-on tackles on the ball carrier from "above", because the carrier was getting down so low. Like this....

I wonder if that's trained now, to avoid the front-on head-to-head risk?

Maybe it's utilised more, but nah, that technique has been around forever - you can only get so low, eventually you have to find another way.

Must admit I though he dipped enough at the time and also though the ball carrier dropped his height a bit - but, still thought he was very lucky at the time. If neither of the above are right (and I’ll assume that’s true) fair enough. Doesn’t help the Reds but it is what it is.

More than anything it makes it more baffling it didn’t get more scrutiny at the time. I do agree with Southern X that I would like a lot more of these dealt with after the game. Maybe still a yellow but other than extreme dangerous or reckless tackles leave the rest to the judiciary.

Reds/Les Kiss pretty bullish about keeping Petaia:
Not sure "livewire" is how I'd describe Petaia but I hope he stays with the Reds. Coming into his prime years now and can be the type of player that makes life a lot easier for others around him as well.

Reds/Les Kiss pretty bullish about keeping Petaia:

Isn't this a kiss of death (pardon the pun).

- the coach who gets full board backing, is always sacked soon after
- the player who has a great game after a long term injury, is injured soon after
- the player who is publicly marked as someone the team wants to keep, leaves soon after
