Div stays loyal to beaten Boks

Wellington - Springboks coach Peter de Villiers remained loyal to his side hammered 32-12 in the first Tri-Nations Test against the All Blacks, making only two enforced changes for Saturday's Test.

Veteran tighthead prop CJ van der Linde comes in for the injured Jannie de Plessis and Danie Rossouw replaces Bakkies Botha, who received a nine-week suspension for head-butting All Blacks' scrumhalf Jimmy Cowan.

De Villiers named his team on Tuesday, saying there was no panic in the South African ranks despite the heavy defeat suffered in Auckland at the weekend by his world champions and reigning Tri-Nations titleholders.

"The way you lose is not as important as how you stand up from such a defeat," he said.

"The guys know they didn’t perform well, they remain proud and they realise that they have hard work ahead of them this week."

Sharks backrower Ryan Kankowski comes into the squad and is the only change to the reserves bench for Saturday's second Test in Wellington.

De Villiers described the four tries-to-nil hiding in the first Test as an off-day and no reason to tinker with his line-up.

"Part of being professional is having to stand up again after those kind of setbacks," he said.

"It won't happen every day that everybody is one per cent off their game and if you are one per cent off against a team like the All Blacks, then you will get hammered.

"Our execution was bad, something happened to make us slower off the mark. But we are aware of it."

De Villiers said the All Blacks also deserved credit for the way they played, bouncing back from a 3-0 whitewash by the Springboks last year.

"The All Blacks were very good at the weekend and they did not allow us space to play the way we wanted," he said.

"We can’t look for excuses. The All Blacks were better than us, it’s as simple as that."

what is your problem with it PB? Thought it was a good piece. And why do you say "they" on one persons opinion - which I think if you read between the lines is rather complimentary to springbok rugby.

And your not worried about the scoreboard in the next one.. why not?

Well 2008 we beat you the first time in NZ since many moons ago, that one if you remember I enjoy more then our WC win in 2007. 2009 was just extending to what we started in 2008.

The only positive from last weeks drubbing is that I hope the Bokke will remember this kak performance when they lined up next year maybe if the All Blacks makes the final and go one better.:fishing

Play like you did last week and the final is the least of your worries... getting there will be the tough one.

As I said earlier on the thread, the quality in the Bok team was still evident in the ease they got into NZ half in the match & we know with Steyn, that it means the AB's must be on guard or they will concede points. It will be tighter this week, I'm sure of that. The weather is supposed to be crap too, which I think will play into your hands as we won't be as keen to run it from everywhere.

Nee wat MR, cant see our lot get up in this one. All Blacks by 20+, Nunu and kie rip our lot apart, Pie Eater getting caught behind every phase, Smit a little bit fitter but still need to be shown by CJ where the play is, Matfield cant catch a wet ball and Habana and Jean trying to intercept every ball. I am not even going to watch this slaughtering, its going to be ugly.

After that we'll beat the Wallabies in the third one.

I changed my mind over that on the weekend. I've been a big fan of Spies over the last few years, but after last weekends test, I'd take Read over him for sure. A week is a long time in rugby tho, so lets see how Spies responds.

I have been a big fan of Reid for some time now. I like the no thrills just get stuck in aspect of his game. I hope Robbie can dig out the recipie for Reid and apply it to Higgers.

Its easy playing behind a dominating tight 5 to perform, maybe some tend it to difficult to understand that concept. If the fatties and tall timber dont do their work, everyone else is simply fucked. Spies is still a laaitie and he'll be back.

Yeah, even this S14 season I thought he looked fantastic in the open/loose games (vs Lions etc) and then was no-where against the tougher/tighter teams

Spies is a flat track bully- he can run all over Italy or Scotland but I can't remember the last time he impressed me in a 3N match. I don't think he is a bad player but he has never quite reached his potential on the big stage.

Paarl - spies should be one of the fatties/tall timber helping to make the pack work. I thought him missing Read as he went for that try summed up his match.

I can understand a scrummie having a shocker behind a shithouse pack, but not a number 8. A number 8 can be integral in turning it around with big strong ball carries, hard hits, lineout takes and brutal smashes into rucks. He cannot turn it around by standing off waiting for something to happen. Compare his game to Burger who, playing beside the same tight 5, hit, tackled, pushed & smashed like a demon. It doesn't even compare.

Spies is undoubtedly one of the games best athletes. But that doesn't mean shit when your hanging off the side of a ruck.

Well hoping he will score two tries this weekend. Must say I'll rather have Duanne Vermeulen right now as backup because Kankowski is pretty much similiar to Spies.

Get a decent winger in instead of JdV to score the tries and tell Speeeeeis! to do a number 8's job

On last weekend's performance I'd put Reid only behind Hairydonky as world XV number 8. Not that many good ones around.
