He's playing poorly for his standards, I think that's fair. He's a former Wallaby captain and regular Wallaby so should be held to a higher standard than most. Come on it's no coincidence that a Reds poor season coincides with a poor form of their key players. Given Carter is back this weekend and if he plays to the same standard he has all year James will find himself out of the Wallabies 23 unless he puts in another Rebels performance.

One of the main problems is created by players themselves.

They perform at the highest level at some point and then THEY are expected to perform like that always or nearly always. The real real champions do that - consistency is the key

It's fair to say he isn't playing his best. But he is judged to a higher standard than others which is unfair qwerty. He seemed to step up his game in a better improving Wallaby pack so it seems to show when the players around him do their job, he's doing his job and more.

I don't want to lose our best PERFORMING players. That would be downright stupid.

I agree with Braveheart that a players' "worth" always works in arrears.

Irrespective of form fluctuations. Who do you want to sign?

The thing that gets me with Quirk and I rate him for the record, is that he seems not to play with the mongral streak he started last year. He still works bloody hard but that aggressiveness that he started last year with provided the balance our back row needs. I want him to find it again.

Undoubtedly true. This is clearly a matter of "finding" his game as a professional, as it has obviously been implied to him that he must watch his discipline. As a junior, he had touches of captain blood about his play. He needs to find that balance.

Some people have some big blinkers on in regards to Horwill, claiming that the Rebels performance is his only good one... His form was building well before the Rebels performance, he has had a number of good games this year which people refuse to acknowledge.

Nah TOCC the pool of locks isn't the same one that saw Dean Mumm get 20+ caps now and Horwill doesn't look as superior any more so he must just be shit!

And this players name would be?

We already have him. Quirk and we just need to get him back to that high impact game he was showing in the first half of last year. Him and Browning can bring the best out of each other in competition for that 6 jersey. I rule Browning out of the eight jersey because I think Shatz has the game to hold onto that for some time to come. The sheer amount of work he is capable of plus he has also proven to be highly efficient at set piece. His lineout work doesn't get the praise it deserves in my view.

No it does not, but the thought of removing players with zero idea of who is available, and is a better replacement within the market is pretty unhelpful input.

The playing pool of established Australian rugby players is very small. The cost of bringing in established and proven international players is very expensive. Therefore you keep your established players, and you hope that the group of young players replace them. Cleaning house is fine in theory, so long as the right people are there to step-up.

The thought of removing Genia, or Horwill to free up money in our circumstance would be diabolical.

This hasn't really seemed to have stopped us from doing it with almost all our outside backs though. :p

I think Quirk has been really good for Queensland and is still needed. He is precisely the sort of player that is valuable because he delivers a quality of performance that he provides injury or form cover for that position.

It is imperative to have guys just like him in the squad because they inevitably end up playing a massive number of minutes throughout a season covering for injury, 60min replacement, form slump, rest. They are just as important as your star performers because whilst they may not single handedly win you games, they won;t single handedly lose you the game by stinking up the joint or being a complete turnstile.

It would be worse if the Reds were to wait to sign a new player before Quirk telling they don't want to re-sign him and leaving him in the lurch late in the season looking for a new club. From rumours, he was out putting the feeler well before he was injured.

I don't think anyone on here is saying Quirk isn't a good player, just that the Reds need a different style of player in the back row and if it's not Quirk to be released, then who?

Professional rugby sucks mate, players will always come and go.

I know its very hard to coach a player into playing a certain way, ie turning a fleet footed winger into a bullocking ball runner and the like. But maybe as well as searching for a powerful backrower the Reds should also be seeking a specialist attack forwards coach?

I know Stiles is running the forwards at the moment and I don't mean to get rid of him, however, he wasn't exactly known for his line bending runs as a player. Maybe bringing in an old school tough nut (Toutai Kefu, Martin Johnson come to mind with their coaching experience) to compliment Stiles. There are actual quite a few technical aspects to efficient ball running which can be learnt with the proper coaching.
