Rule 7.4.1 (a) Players with current SuperRugby contracts can only play 1st Grade. (thanks for posting this little gem of a rule previously @bellytwoblues)

How is this rule to be applied if your club has 4 props on Super Rugby contracts (mix of Full contracts and EPS) and there is a bye for the relevant Super Rugby team.

The Corporation have listed Sandell to start in 2nd Grade, but there are 3 other contracted props there that all must play 1st grade according to this rule.

Then he shouldn't be allowed to play.
I assume the rule is designed to avoid mis matches.
It's a very good demonstration of why the points system should be based on players registered with the club, not players taking the field.

They'll have to play a couple of them in the second row like they did with Tilse last year. Could be the reason for all the TBCs in this week's team.

Interesting point about the contracted Siper players being in First grade to prevent mismatches.

There is a 19 year old player on a Super Rugby Supplementary Squad contract ( whatever that is) that has been listed as playing Easts Colts 1 this weekend. Imagine that lad coming up against Jarrod Barry in First Grade. Jarrod Barry would eat that young lad for breakfast and then still be casting around for more food. Talk about a mismatch. Introducing rock stars to the realities of first grade rugby too early can have detrimental effects on their overall development, especially in the engine room.

I don't think the rule applies to supplementary contacted players.
My understanding is the rule was written in the days when there was no extended squads etc etc.
WTF is a Tahs supplementary squad member doing playing colts?
If he's not a first grader, what the fuck are the Tahs doing with him?
Bring him him, when he can compete with men.......

The comments above about men playing boys are very valid IMO.
Not sure of the wisdom of the Wicks naming Harrison Goddard on the bench for 1st grade against Penrith. How old is he, 17? He looks to be about 50kg wringing wet.

Is this another example of the rules not keeping pace with the times, or the single minded myopic determination of some clubs to try to hamstring others while losing sight of the bigger picture?

I think the Tahs signed the kid because they realise the potential he has if and when he grows into his body. Get him on a contract of sorts and it will keep the other franchises hands off him.

I'm sure that the both Southern Districts and the Wix, as well as the Tahs saw potential in Lukhan L-Tui as a up and coming talent, but he was snapped up by the Reds after the U20s when he was only 18/19. Blokes of his mass don't grow on trees and the last thing you want to see is your opposition poaching your players, as the Hobbits found out after they "discovered and invested in him".

No they don't grow on trees, but they come up for contract renewal every couple of years.
Pocock & Hooper are both good examples.
Signed straight out of School, succeeded straight away, moved on when their contract expired.
Paying kids for 3 or 4 years hoping they will make the grade one day is fucking madness IMO

^^^^So is continuing to pay for players who are past their use by date.

For every Hooper that comes home, there is a Luke Jones that doesn't.

One of the crosses that NSW and QLD bear is that they must produce a fair amount of the product for the other three franchises, while they develop some depth and player numbers in their own catchment area.

Ain't gonna change soon.

Hmm, we could use Jones now.
But did we need/want him when we were playing Douglas & Potgeiter?
if Jones' manager for example, didn't touch base with other Oz franchises before they extended,he isn't doing his job.
Signing a kid out of School guarantees his services for the length of this initial
term only.

Well, I for one am looking forward to tomorrow's game. The younger brother of a close friend of my better half, is playing for Norths - Will Miller. For some weird reason, I never made the link until this week!

He loves his rugby, and good to see him progressing.

Round 3 was pretty poor tipping effort with only 3/6. In my defence, two games were settled by 1 point and the margin in the third game was only 4 points. I’m pretty sure that Accuracy attenuator on the Tip-o-matic is playing up, and I think the spadget that controls the thrust bearing on the magnorectometer needs to be adjusted slightly.

Round 4 tips.

Northern Suburbs v Eastwood. The Shoremen have had some good performances and just need to settle into their rhythm better. Similar for the Woodies who beat the Beasties who beat the Shoremen. I’m tipping an upset victory to the Shoremen for no other reason than the Tip-O-Meter predicted the Woodies to take the chocolates.

Manly v Sydney University. Happy 2000th game MMM. There should be a good crowd in at the Village Green to see the MMM cruise to victory after ambushing The Corporation with 3 unanswered converted tries in the opening 20 minutes. That mountain will be too high for the young Camperdown team.

Parramatta v Warringah. The M2B will be pissed with their L last week. Look out for the home team to come out with all guns blazing, playing some Auckland Bloos style jailbreak footy. That and the response from the Rats will cause the spectators to forget to partake in the delicious Food and Beverage options from the 3 Jarse Star rated Merrylands RSL Park canteen. 80 plus points to be scored. Rats to win with a meat pie scored 12 phases after Belly has rung the full time bell.

Penrith v Randwick. The victor is about as certain as the sun rising in the East. What is up for debate is how much meat the men from the foot of the mountains will scrag off the Gallopers. I’m tipping the Emus to get 3 meat pies, 2 converted.

Southern Districts v Eastern Suburbs. The Hobbits are the form team of the competition and have already been installed as Hugh’s Premiership favourites. The big Sylvania Waters crowd will be treated to a systematic slaughter of the Latte Sipping Harbour Viewers Shute Shield season success schemes. Hobbits by 10-15.

West Harbour v Gordon. Both teams are on equal points on the ladder with 1/3. The Pirates sole victory was over a team higher on the ladder than the team that the Stags triumphed over, so on that flimsy piece of warped logic, I’m tipping the Pirates to continue on the winning way with a 5-12 point victory.

A depleted Woods will still be too good for Norths.
Manly over Uni,in match of the round.
Parra in an upset
Wicks have the human bye
Souths > Easts
West harbour, only cos they are playing Gordon.
