You're misreading non-existent words between lines that aren't there. I was simply making the point that $700k spread amongst 12 clubs (if that's what this line in the accounts means) wouldn't go very far. It wasn't a criticism as we all know the NSWRU struggles to even break even. Any funding to clubs would need to come from the ARU and I don't understand why they would want to filter that through the NSWRU, but it's a pointless discussion anyway as the ARU has already said it is not going to fund Premier Clubs as they will "piss it up against the wall" in player payments.

BTW, previous posts have suggested there are very few paid employees at the NSWRU and I'm not sure whether there are any at the SRU. I have no inside knowledge of this, just relying on what others have said in the past.

The answer:
  • The NSWRU is one of the 14 members of the ARU. The clubs are not.
The Shute is not a national level purview; it's a state-level premier comp.

But in the end it's not about the name on the cheque, it's about how many zeroes are on the end of the amount. If this districts comp was being delivered (say) 7m we wouldn't be hearing so much moaning.

So they need to get out there and find more income and sponsors. Which is what the SRU is saying they are doing. And so they should.

Anyone have any information on the date / venue of the Sydney Club 7s?
I thought it was going to co-incide with the Sydney 7s as per 2016 but, Dave, you said this was not the case. Any updates? Is it going to happen this year or was it a once-off?

He never said the consolidation had no impact, but the extra 2 weeks preparation surely had an impact across all 3 teams, i believe i made similar comments prior to the NRC 2016 season on that very issue.

NSW Country were obvious beneficiaries of the Stars amalgamation, finishing first on the ladder in 2016.

Harry Jones was the only player from the Stars 2015 squad who joined the Rays in 2016, yet they improved their ladder position from 6th to 2nd.

I dont think any of the 2015 Stars squad joined the Ram, but the Rams improved their points differential from -121 in 2015 to just -2 in 2016, overall a much more competitive team despite only winning 2 games.

I would say a lot of it had to do with not trying to please every club rather just trying to get the best result for the franchise.

That's the way I felt the Rays worked out at least. It also helped having Cron coaching the side as he dragged Norths NSW Country contingent into the Rays set up. He was also able to bring in additional players to a larger extent than Townsend did(not saying Townsend wasn't able too either).

The Rams seemed more organised this season and benefited from the re emergence of Lolohea and a breakout season from Viiga.

The break definitely allows for greater rest/team pattern work than having no break obviously so is somewhat beneficial how much is up to your interpretation.

With three teams now I would expect all three NSW teams to be very competitive if not win it most years from now.

So are you expecting that the NSW sides will no longer need to wrangle any of the Force, Rebels or Brumbies players that have been considered an unfair advantage in the past?

I haven't had anything to say about the SS scheduling up til now, but the one aspect I find amusing is the bleat that the SS would be starting too early and the heat would be too bad if they brought the season forward by a couple of weeks. Surprisingly, they would still be some weeks after the start of the Super Rugby season I believe. Are Super Rugby players so much tougher than the SS players?

Hopefully the Super players are a lot fitter than the lower grade players whose games start at 10:45am.
And almost all the Super games are played at night.
Not all of the SS grounds have good enough lighting for night games.

I notice Coleman also complained about the unfairness of the 18 round comp, with some teams playing those teams which finished in the bottom half of the table last year twice, whilst others only play them once.

I think I've heard that somewhere before (about 100 times) :rolleyes:

Full home-and-away (like the Premier Rugby comps in all other states) would be great, but it's only going to happen if the SS reduces the number of teams. Think we've been there :(

Must be difficult for them....

Yet somehow the players in Queensland where it's hotter and more humid, manage to start the Queensland Premier Rugby comp 2 weeks earlier then the Shute Shield..

Same issue up north, lighting isn't good enough for night games.

Wouldn't like to be a lower grade player up there.

Should we throw daylight saving into the mix?
It ends in NSW on the night of round 1 so games will effectively start 1 hour later than they would have if the comp had started mid-March.
No daylight saving in Qld.

no daylight savings mean the Queensland Premier Grade comp is playing in the hotter part of the day..

It's the other way around isn't it?
3pm kickoff here during DS is only 2pm in Brisbane so they kickoff an hour after us (actually 1 hour 20mins as they start at 3:20pm)
