Where to for Super Rugby?

So what happens when the Rebels' private ownership group inevitably get tired of throwing money away? Melbourne is one of the most competitive sporting markets in the world and rugby has always struggled to get any sort of foothold outside of major events. I think the Force have proven they have the better base on which to build. But it's ridiculous it has come to this.

Actually, the penny has just now dropped:

With both the Force and the Rebels heavily inferring they might sue the ARU if indeed they are cut, this farcical ARU 'process to determine which franchise is to be cut' is a of course solely a creature of the ARU's laughable timidity and is a tactical policy dreamt up by its legal department to minimise the chance of successful litigation against it once the decision is announced. 'A considered process of review' implies no pre-judgement and an 'objective, carefully weighed approach'.

That then is offered up in the ARU's defence if sued by a bundle of Force supporters, or the Rebels owners.

I'll bet this is it.

According to Pandaram, the Force, Cheetahs and Kings have already been confirmed as the 3 to go - the only waiting period is to do with how best to announce it.

I dunno why they don't just do it straight away and save everyone fretting. Surely it's better for fans of those teams that way.

werent all the various codes pretty much granted money to build a centralised elite performance centre, and this is what the ARU came up with?

ARU was given $1.5million to relocate their offices
ARU was given $20million for a high performance training facility

What the ARU are building, is an $18million office space and a $3.5million training facility

And the Brumbies have a statement to make tomorrow?

And how much money have you guys bled to get there?

How many Wallabies will be from either team come end year?

I'm not going to engage with a slanging match about the negatives of one side or the other. I thoroughly enjoyed today's game by the force and I hope a few players are given an opportunity in the coming June internationals from them.

As for the rebels, performances have been unexceptable. There is also other factors to which have been over looked. 5 games played, 4 of which have been against kiwi opposition, on current form opposition all aus teams would of lost to. Then the injury toll is unheard of, probably something which highlights something wrong with the s & c program.

Rebels games played = 5

First choice XV

Toby smith - missed 5 games
James Hansen - missed 1 game, knocked out in 2
Laurie Weekes - missed 2 games
Dominic Day - missed 3, knocked out in 2 (1 after 1min)
Sam Jeffries - missed 5 games
Lopeti Timani - missed 3 games
Sean McMahon - missed 5 games
Amanaki Mafi - fit
Nick Stirzacker - knocked out in 1 game
JGB - fit
Sefa Naivalu - missed 3 games
Reece Hodge - fit
Mitch Inman - misses 3 games
Morika Koribete - missed 1 game
Jack Deb - fit

Pat leafa - fit
Cruz Ah Nau - missed 3 games
Tyrel Lomax - fit
Steve Cummins - missed 1 game, knocked out in 1
Alex Toolis - missed 5 games
Colby Fainga'a - missed 1 game
Jordi Reid - fit but played last 2 with a fractured back
Ben Meehan - missed 4 games
Dom Shipperley - missed 5 games

On top of that currently 16 players unavailable

Not going to lie it's a partial excuse but equally as a fan Iv been very disappointed with the lack of commitment from the players that have been on the field. It's borderline unprofessional at times.

However it's disappointing how quickly things can change, at the start of the season a mere 7 weeks ago, many were tipping the rebels to push for top of the conference on the back of two seasons were they had showed an upward trend in results. Now after playing the highlanders, hurricanes, blues and chiefs in their first 5 games, all matches no aus team would win on current results it's apparently time to throw them in the dumpster just like how people were doing to the force last year once all this farce began.

A fundamental fact the ARU are dealing with is that more than a decade of incompetence has them looking at a system which is not financially sustainable simply because nobody is watching. Sorry nobody new is watching.

I have said for years that there simply is not enough money in the game here to sustain the system they have, not just in Super Rugby but the Wallabies as well.

So the ARU is a grand example of neo-conservative trickle down economics has deemed for that decade that more funding to the top in the form of bigger and better (from their POV) media deals will "grow" the game. Has there ever been an example of trickle down economics working anywhere in the world?

Now we have with the benefit of the European learnings (obviously the Skysports link :) ) adopted the latest version of neoconservative economic management, austerity. Lets grow the economy Greek style by contracting its "cost base" by 20%. Yes that will work.

We have got here because the ARU is fundamentally incompetent. Not just this iteration but all the versions that have gone before since professionalism with each incoming Board member and CEO inheriting the "projects" and agreements of the one before and being selected because they "fit" the vision of the people already in place, because they were also picked for that reason.

So if anybody really wants to "save" Australian Rugby, break the ARU. Basically the state RUs and RUPA need to get together and vote to leave the ARU and form a new body that will apply for membership with the IRB. I'm and 100% sure that the grass roots clubs will dump the ARU. Let them have their meetings and make decisions that will impact nobody. Make no mistake, this is not an action that allows for the continuation of the Force or Rebels, or even the Tahs, Reds and Brumbies. SANZAAR itself will cease to exist simply because the signatory from the Australian market ceases to have any players or clubs to contribute.

If the ARU wait long enough to make their decision, then it will be a case of which franchise can outlast which franchise - with Force securing major sponsorships and even private mum and dad ownership they may well secure their future.

I hear the wine storage rooms and chauffeurs' waiting quarters are very well-designed.

And that, only very recently, the ARU board (on BP's recommendation) decided to install a state of the art 'Panic Room' deep in the new building's bowels (though speculation continues amongst the ARU's catering staff as to why that would be needed, but 2017's few remaining rugby fans would surely understand).

Can you still buy a box of horse shit to be couriered to an enemy? I'll chip in for a steaming pile of dung sent to ARU HQ.

Just get to Sydney early, acquire rotten fruit & veg, hide in the bushes and peg the ARU board with it when they arrive for give themselves rectal exams work

Maybe some of the country NSW members can lend us a truck-load?

Even better idea - disguise yourselves as members of the press, and when they have the presser, peg the rotten fruit and veg at them then.

Who can attend the ARU AGM? The line of sight from me, as a fan, to decision makers, is so murky and disconnected.

How can average Jo make his/her voice heard by those irrelevant jowls at HQ?

Murky and disconnected is actually a very accurate description of the board.;)
