Murky and disconnected is actually a very accurate description of the board.

Actually that's not totally fair.

The ARU's board as currently constructed would be very able in tasks like charity fund-raising, going to regular yet discreet 'elite' Sydney networking dos to foster the chances of certain members getting onto the most lucrative public company boards, assessing how Board Minutes should be written to ensure 'there are no unfortunate incidents captured inappropriately with any potential future litigation in mind', advising politicians regarding 'the interests of the Australian Sydney business community in the Asian century', the assessment of leading Barossa Valley shiraz vintages, the best large-scale apartments being built in 'key' suburbs such as Bellevue Hill and Mosman......and such like tasks of importance within the contemporary Australian business setting.

If Super Rugby wasn't already dead, it is now. 2 of the 3 founding member unions have just alienated their support bases. The prize they covet the almighty Asian market. Rugby is not played at a standard in every Asian market except Japan. Japan to the rescue! How does history tell us chasing the Asian market turns out? AFL - Failed. NBL - Failed. NRL? - never bothered because they know it is a dumb idea.
It will be deliciously ironic to hear the ARU, after SANZAAR has announced they are chasing new markets after they have ignored their core market, to announce they are chasing the fabled Melbourne market. The cash cow, the saviour, Melbourne to the rescue! What has history taught us about chasing the fabled Melbourne market? It takes a lot of money, oh so much money but thats ok. You have to spend money to make money. You spend $15 to make $1. We're not spending $15 to make $16 no, we're smarter than that! We only need that $1! Be damned the other $14. No one cares for you.
Even more ironic will be the explanation from the ARU "we need to cut costs". The same ARU that just made an extra $30 million in revenue and sold a franchise to cut costs is about to cut a second franchise from its teat. A TV deal plus offloading 2 franchises? Deviously clever.
No restructuring of expenditure from the savings from selling a franchise to keep the 5 teams, no fight for the future of one of your fastest growing development pathways.
Our employees and their families? The same people we rely on to entertain us by working their whole life just to wear the jersey they look up to? Who needs them. They are not important to our profit/loss statements. No, we must forever circle jerk in our new Golden Towers which we will rename the EARUO.

A fundamental fact the ARU are dealing with is that more than a decade of incompetence has them looking at a system which is not financially sustainable simply because nobody is watching. Sorry nobody new is watching.

I have said for years that there simply is not enough money in the game here to sustain the system they have, not just in Super Rugby but the Wallabies as well.

So the ARU is a grand example of neo-conservative trickle down economics has deemed for that decade that more funding to the top in the form of bigger and better (from their POV) media deals will "grow" the game. Has there ever been an example of trickle down economics working anywhere in the world?

Now we have with the benefit of the European learnings (obviously the Skysports link ) adopted the latest version of neoconservative economic management, austerity. Lets grow the economy Greek style by contracting its "cost base" by 20%. Yes that will work.

We have got here because the ARU is fundamentally incompetent. Not just this iteration but all the versions that have gone before since professionalism with each incoming Board member and CEO inheriting the "projects" and agreements of the one before and being selected because they "fit" the vision of the people already in place, because they were also picked for that reason.


So if anybody really wants to "save" Australian Rugby, break the ARU. Basically the state RUs and RUPA need to get together and vote to leave the ARU and form a new body that will apply for membership with the IRB. I'm and 100% sure that the grass roots clubs will dump the ARU. Let them have their meetings and make decisions that will impact nobody. Make no mistake, this is not an action that allows for the continuation of the Force or Rebels, or even the Tahs, Reds and Brumbies. SANZAAR itself will cease to exist simply because the signatory from the Australian market ceases to have any players or clubs to contribute.

In principle I'm all for it. But who are these gurus who are going to sign on and take Aussie rugby into the stratosphere? I'm not criticising the idea but for it to have legs we all need to know what we are signing up for.

Who can attend the ARU AGM? The line of sight from me, as a fan, to decision makers, is so murky and disconnected.

Delegates of each of the member organisations will be there.

One vote each for the eight member unions – QLD, NSW, ACT, VIC, TAS, SA, WA, NT.
One vote each for union with over 50,000 registered players – currently two (NSW, QLD).
One vote for each Super Rugby team – Waratahs, Brumbies, Rebels, Reds, Force
One vote for RUPA – the Rugby Union Players Association.


Those member organisation's core duties are:-

• The right to dismiss a Director, or the whole Board, and appoint a majority of the Board.
• The right to approve or reject amendments to the Constitution.
• The right to approve or reject changes to ARU’s core business.

Can we all at least agree on a baseline off solidarity and a giant middle finger to the real enemies, the ARU and SANZAAR?

Some hearts are about to be broken and the worst thing that *this* community could do is have its members turn on each other and advocate in favour of one team being chopped.

What the ARU are building, is an $18million office space and a $3.5million training facility

The truth is the ARU probably want to get rid of the Rebels, but are too scared of litigation so will take the easy option and cut the Force.

The dead eyed morons back slapping each other at St Leonard's already know this in their cold dead hearts, but don't have the guts or fortitude to admit it.

Pure speculation here, but removing one of the Super Rugby teams would also involve removing one of the Members of the ARU

I'd imagine that can't be done without a full vote of all of the members. The AGM is on Tuesday, so I'd imagine that's when it would be done. It's probably also a change to the core business of the ARU, which would also require a member's ballot

So while the CEO, Chairman, and Board of Directors each will have to take responsibility for the decision, ultimately it will be the State Unions, Super Rugby teams and RUPA who have the vote.

So apparently ARU will hold a press conference tomorrow at 0930 but won't announce which team is to be cut.....

ARU are part of SANZAAR, ARU vote is required for any change to SANZAAR, it's obvious now that this change in format is the one they walked away from London with a month ago, so why haven't the ARU made a decision?

It's clear that this ARU board is completely inept and incapable of running a professional sporting competiton.

Even if the Force or Rebels survive, this process before announcement could take months and by then the players may well have moved on overseas or whatever for security.

So even if a team survives it will still be affected by this.

I always like to favour 'the simplex' over 'the complex', so to me there is a simple, but maybe not-so-obvious solution:
1. Stay with an 18-team competition.
2. Say 'goodbye' to The Sunwolves and The Jaguares.
3. Cut The Cheetahs and The Kings.
4. Relocate the Melbourne Rebels to Perth, to combine with The Western Force as "The Western Rebels".
5. Invite New Zealand to field 10 teams. (That will dilute their talent-pool, and give the Australian teams a much better chance of beating them)!!

Now that wasn't so hard, was it?
