I think this argument is silly. Waugh turned out to be a great rugby play, Smith was just generational.
It's not like the talent ID mechanism was completely fucked, they were even both deemed starting Wallabies in their prime.
One team (the Tahs) can't keep all the talent. When talent leaves and situations change a player's development can speed up or slow down. Just thank the lord the Brumbies were around for that opportunity.

Indeed. It's just the favourite revisionist argument trotted out from time to time. It suits the argument that the Tahs are unremittingly shit at talent identification and the Brumbies are unbelievable at turning discards into superstars. Of course the truth is always more complex.

Yep - that is a hindsight choice - both great players.
Tahs end up with the in the system players.
Often there are others that bloom a little later that can be better.

And George Smith is a poor example to use. His talent was identified, Eddie Jones and the Brumbies presented a better offer and signed the kid when he was still in colts.
I hold the view that there are serious issues with NSWRU talent identification and youth development pathways, but I certainly woudn't be using George Smith as my case study.

Anyone know about a bloke named Tristan Schneider playing in NSW?
He was a WA U/20 rep last year playing LHP, (out of Joondalup Brothers I believe), and was a very handy kid with huge potential. I heard he was heading over to NSW to chase bigger and better things in 2017, but can't find him listed with any clubs there.
He went to school with my kids so just looking to see how he is progressing.

Does anybody seriously think Gibson is a chance to be signed for Tahs next year....well then again how long did the reds persist with Richard Graham. It seems in rugby there is a willingness to persist with mediocrity.

i've seen a fair amount of calls for grey's head (and been amongst those voices myself).

Whilst I am usually in the forefront of people calling for the heads of coaches, usually because it is plainly obvious that they do not have a program to improve performance, we really do have to admit that it doesn't matter who is HC at this time and perhaps for the next couple of years (if Super Rugby even exists) simply because without the underlying structures being fixed an incoming good coach really needs the stars to align for them to perform at even a decent level. The systems in Australia are that bad IMO and the players that poorly skilled that it really doesn't matter who is head coach.
The first step in fixing any part of Australian Rugby is the complete resignation of every official, toadie and executive at the ARU and then a complete rebuild focussing first and foremost on quality outcomes instead of the up to now focus on quantity of media distributable games. If I had my way a dissolving of the ARU altogether and the creation of an independent commission style governance model to take of the running of the game in its entirety (which would of course relegate the State RUs to an advisory body only whose only other function would be the amateur game and as a voting and representative body to the commission.

The are also all the "same" Holaway, Hanigan, Wells, Mumm, McDuling all kind of play the same.
Skelton and Hooper are the only ball runners, the rest do that run and flop short, recycle thing

Disagree with Holloway and Hanigan. Holloway's traditional strength has been ball running partciuliarly in the wider channels and Hanigan has a bit of abrasiveness to win collisions.
