It doesn't take too much.

I did some investigation earlier and I think that we have an average number of semi finalists which is higher for 5 teams than 3 teams (or very similar) and the same number of winners in less years of competition.

Yep... correlation isn't causation

What I want to know, and what the ARU fails to answer, is how will reducing a team change the fortunes of the Super Rugby teams and the Wallabies

The glaring problem with that graph is that it isn't adjusted for the number of teams on in the competition.

Coming 4th out of 12 teams isn't the same as coming 4th out of 18 teams, which is obviously more difficult. So the averages should be more like:

12 teams: 5.49/12 = 0.46
14 teams: 8.25/14 = 0.59
15-18 teams: 9.4/16.5 = 0.57

So the drop off is far less severe and we're actually doing marginally better now than in super 14..... although that number would no doubt be dragged down a fair bit by this year's results

I was just thinking just now.

When the ARU took the Force's admin & license over the point was apparently to cut down costs so we would be sustainable and look at centralising Australian Rugby. First thing the ARU did is try to cut us.

Would it not have been more cost effective to say to the Force first up we were safe because of the structure we have in place and every single other team would need to follow suit or face a cut in fund allocation.

The ARU face two scenarios, saving funds by not allocating certain amounts to non complying franchises and/or a final end goal of a centralised Australian rugby which has efficient, cost effective admin and a single game plan across all the teams (similar to NZ) Sure the other franchises may kick up a fuss about their allocation but bugger em, it's ACTUALLY for the good of Australian rugby and not the select few.

So according to that graph, our ranking can go back up to 'slightly less shit'. Except I don't see that happening. The problem is not with the cattle, it's with the coaching set-ups at each province. We aren't fit enough, our skills are sub-par, and we cannot kick. Next season we'll have four mediocre teams instead of five.

Here's an interesting development...

Andrew 'Twiggy' Forrest the WA Billionaire addressed the Western Force after the match versus the Waratahs and has said he will back them 100% to stay in the Super Rugby competiton.

What that means exactly is unknown, but you would have to assume name sort of financial exchange.

Australian rugby would actually be better served by scrubbing the Tahs and starting a new franchise in Sydney than it will be by sacking the Force or Rebels

You have to remember also that Twiggy is also a complete media tart and full of it half the time. Still, he's put his money where his mouth is for things he cares about. FMG have been a sponsor of the Force for a while now too.

Whether it was planned in advance or a heat of the moment response following a very emotional game he knew he was being recorded by the media and you would think a man in his position would be committed to keeping his word.
