I recently told my adult children that if they are ever having a wedding then don't expect me to be there. Don't even ask. I cannot stand the things and life is too short to voluntarily spoil a precious day.

If the Petersham 9,Robbie Catanach, ever got hurt or went to the snow or a wedding or some other clubs Ladies Day then Petersham might as well not bother turning up. That team would be useless without him.

Seagull Butler

I am pretty sure that our forum buddy Seagull Butler also butchered a try when he had white line fever with his winger unmarked, but everybody seemed to have a bit of a laugh about it after.

Yep, clean knock-on after well after initial contact. However in my defence, I had already thrown two passes that led to tries so I wasn't going to push my luck for a third, especially given how I normally pass.

So you're saying you wouldn't even rock up just to get on the cans? Society really is decaying. If anyone needs me, I'll be at Waverley Oval admiring the picket fence.

Those cans may appear to be free but actually they come at a terrible price. I would be forced to socialise with relatives,in laws, friends and acquaintances. That's exactly the same type of people I've been avoiding for a decade. Quite happy to pay $4 a can at the rugby and hang with other like minded folk. $4 is free compared to the alternative.

'Forced to socialise'. There's where you fall flat. Find the other son, and spend the rest of the night holding up the bar. Problem solved.

As for the ceremony, the smartphone was designed with boring weddings in mind. Just follow the cricket/rugby/curling scores and away you go. If your team gets up, you don't even need to feign tears of joy. You cannot lose.

Anyone got any opinions on how 1st grade teams would compete against each other across divisions? 1st div v 3rd div type scenario?

Only Div 1 this weekend, with all other divisions having a break for wet weather weekend

Div 1 Tips

Mosman v St Pats- Mosman to win by plenty in this one
Balmain v Drummoyne- Matter of survival for Balmain now so winning higher grades is a must but don't see them getting close to Drummoyne this week
Petersham v Knox- Knox need to win this one to keep their finals hopes alive but cant see them knocking off one of the competition front runners. Petersham by 15 Points
Colleagues v Waverley- Colleagues to take this one out, could be a long old day for the men from Waverley

Suggest that there would be some very competitive games BUT Div 1 and 2 First Grade sides in the top 4 are probably going to have the fitness and skill to take most others out.

I don't think they would have fared so well against disciplined opposition.

Indeed - when reviewing that First Grade side's results, under pressure they conceded a lot of yellow cards. They just had enough individual talent to get out of it e.g. their Fijian fullback who could just run around/through everyone.

Having said that, Blacktown are still in contention for finals in all Grades this year, so they're still doing a lot right.

Looking at the remaining rounds, the finalists for Div 4 are pretty much decided IMHO, based on form. The only bone of contention is going to be the game between Irish and Harlequins in First Grade - that could determine who makes it, and who doesn't.

FIRSTS: Oatley, Blacktown, Canterbury, Harlequins
SECONDS: Irish, Canterbury, Blacktown, Oatley
THIRDS: Oatley, Canterbury, Blacktown, Irish (that is a lock-in as Mac Uni are in 5th but 12 points back).

For anyone looking at the tables, its worth noting that we play Canterbury and then Blacktown so that is basically 10 points for each of their Grades to guarantee them all a spot.

I cant see Harlequins making it into 1st Grade finals. I work with a guy from Quins and he was saying that word is Irish are back to full strength with 5 or 6 1st Grade players back that have either been away or out with injury the past couple of games. That and the game is in Latham which helps Irish, either way itll be a cracker of a game on the 4G astroturf pitch they have in Coogee

Irish have nothing to gain from Third Grade, and neither do Quins, so that will be minimum effort from both teams.

Irish will want to smash Quins second grade in order to keep the chasing mob at bay, and secure a minor premiership.

First Grade could be anything - Quins showed they can put it together, defeating Oatley at HV Evatt. Their last two games are Mac uni (5 points) and Blacktown - where they'll be seeking a bit of revenge after some friction in Round 7.

Irish are bloody well drilled, but they've got Oatley at HV Evatt in the last week, so they know they have to win this one to get a gap, and then hope a bit.

Practically up the street from each other in real terms - maybe not in Eastern Suburbs terms ;)

I'm asking our lads if they're willing to go along and watch some finals footy. Blow off a bit of steam, have a few beers in the sun, and cheer everyone on, not just the clubs we like ;)
