I doubt the ARU / Rugby Au would be threatened by Twiggy's comp.........
I think they'd be more than happy to support it and see how it unfolds going into the next Super Rugby negotiations........

Why do you think they would want to stop it?

They don't want anyone cutting their lunch. That's how the ARU rolls.

There's "still a fair bit of talking to be done", and it will be delayed for as long as can be got away with … unless the blowtorch is sufficiently applied to the belly.

Clyne has sown a little seed – "it can’t in any way diminish or dilute club rugby, NRC, or Super Rugby" – to be used if needed.

And whichever calendar window is chosen, the IPR will overlap these comps.

yes agree. They want 100% control, prob why they didn't engage with Twiggy. Now having screwed Twiggy they know he will kill them if he can. While Twiggy does not have a viable comp he is virtually powerless. But it would not surprise me to see them change their attitude once Clyne is gone. Clyne is, and always has been the problem in forging a combined best outcome future for Aust rugby.

In news (if true) that seems simply unbelievable I'm hearing rumours that Brett Robinson is very close to getting the ARU CEO gig.

Just what they need. A medical doctor who has been working in the ARU during this last period of lurching from one fiasco to another. It is virtually impossible to believe that the Board would accept ac recommendation which involves an internal appointment after what has gone on. But as you say, nothing is out of the question with this mob.

Who's Brett Robinson?

Derpus, others have mentioned that he is currently a board member and a medical doctor. He was also a Wallaby and a Brumby, captain and played No 7. Stayed a year too long in the position imo and kept George Smith out when he was already playing the house down as a teenager. I might well be wrong, but I'm sure I've heard that Brett deputised for Pulver or Clyne at a couple of important meetings, one with SANZAAR in London and one with the WARU, in the lead up to the decision to reduce the Aus conference to four teams. If so, pretty much tarred with the same brush I'd say.

I'm a bit less pessimistic than you, in that I don't think they'll get in the way of the comp happening - but I do think there are some things the ARU can't compromise on

* Competativeness of Super rugby teams
* Wallaby eligibility for Oz teams only

They can compromise on the competitiveness of NRC and club comps because they are internal - like AFL and NRL if you only play each other you'll never know the real standard of play.

So will twiggy be happy with a 2nd half of the year comp in competition with Europe and Japan for players, with Aus players only playing for the Force and no SothernH internationals (playing TRC)?

We'll find out soon I guess.

He has publicly stated this, AFAIK. So, yes.

They can compromise on the competitiveness of NRC and club comps because they are internal.

Clearly, this is the way forward. Let's hope it's not de-Clyne'd.

What, exactly, is the big issue with him being a doctor?

We want him to keep practicing as a Doctor rather than becoming a CEO of the ARU.
I think the correct medical terminology for that would be an appointment from the 'shallow end of the gene pool'!

He's mainly a businessman, having been involved in a few medical companies, as well as obviously a lot of time on Sports Administration. His main "medical" work is / was as a surgical assistant for Orthopaedic surgeons. I think the practice of medicine will struggle along without one Surgical Assistant. From a business point of view I'd say he's hardly unqualified. I have no idea if he is the best person for the job (who even knows if many applied for the position), and I fully understand the rationale for people wanting no-one from within the tent taking the position. I probably think it's better too. But this is probably a place he has been working towards if you look at his CV.

It is very rare for a CEO to be appointed from an existing Board Member, it just not good Corporate Governance.
Anyway the other rumour doing the rounds also from the shallow end of the gene pool is Rod Kafer.

maybe no one else wants the job, after they have a a bit of a sniff around HQ and realise the only one allowed to make decisions is Clyne.
In effect they would just be another powerless figurehead to hang the blame on for future fuckups.
