Reds won’t spend their whole salary cap in 2018, not because they don’t want to, because they can’t afford too. It will be quite a bit under even before the Frisby, Karmichael and Quade issues.

Hunts contract will be torn up but unless Cooper and Frisby ask for a release (which seems to be the Reds plan) they are on the hook for two more years.

Lance was at training this morning, bandaged left hand, running water during the opposed stuff. so was Adams, Debreczeni, McGregor etc. Hodge running at 12, DHP on a wing and Maddocks at fullback (but Sefa N still in rehab). the only two who i couldnt see running around were Daley and Weeks, everyone either in full training or team rehab/WWNW (wallabies who need work - Coleman &Timani)

Thanks SP. I hope Jono found time to introduce himself to Will ;)

Nope - some blokes want to head north but Rebs are being pricks about it. Great for Aussie rugby

I would have thought it very unlikely that some Rebels blokes would want to leave the dream team to join the dysfunctional Reds - one player wont make a hoot of difference to the Reds performance - they need a team, and a coach who can bring them together - it certainly wouldn't be any of the old Rebels boys as they would not be keen to catch up with good ole TT (imo). In terms of Rebs being pricks, they are in this competition to win, its not the under 10s giving the other side a few players so at least the boys can have a game - this is for real. You dont give the competition a leg up to even up the playing field, we want to - need to win, so good on them for being pricks (imo).

Can we get this salary cap thing clarified. Yep i agree they are most likely over the cap but it's purely on numbers and not the actual contracts themselves. I've had ago at what i'd believe are the highest earners in Aus rugby (i could be completely wrong) but it should indicate they aren't far off what the other teams are paying

Top line earners

Folau - NSW
Beale - NSW
Pocock - ACT
Genia - VIC
Hooper - NSW
Cooper - QLD

High earners

Foley - NSW
Coleman - VIC
Kepu - NSW
Smith - QLD
Koroibete - Vic
Hunt - QLD
DHP - Vic
Simmons - NSW
Kerevi - QLD
Douglas - QLD
Sio - ACT
Kurindrani - ACT
Phipps - NSW
Slipper - QLD

Med-High earners

Frisby - QLD
Parling - Vic
Mafi - Vic
Higgers - QLD
Hodge - Vic
Rona - NSW
McCalman - NSW?????
Latu - NSW
Uelese - Vic
Carter - ACT
Naisarani - ACT
Arnold - ACT
Timani - Vic
Faulkner - Vic
Speight - ACT
AAT - ACT
Godwin - ACT
Meakes - Vic
Lance - Vic

Medium earners

Hawera - ACT
Naivalu - Vic
Phillip - Vic
Tupou - QLD
Hardwick - Vic
Powell - ACT
Ruru - Vic
Nabuli - QLD
DP - QLD

Below Average but due a good pay day soon

Maddocks - Vic
Dempsey - NSW
Hanigan - NSW
Rodda - QLD
Tui - QLD
Banks - ACT
Perese - QLD

I've obviously missed plenty of players, but if im even remotely close to the mark it shows, NSW have spent all their money on 7/8 players

The Reds top 7/8 earners either aren't in the starting 15 anymore, been injured the past 12 months, about to get sacked, isolated from training, told to find a new club, or on a pension. A lot of money was spent to get Douglas in, Quade back, Frisby resigned, Smith in, Kerevi resigned, Hunt over from AFL, Higgers in from Japan and lets not forget only 2/3 years ago Slipper was the premier LH in Aus. So it's creating a bit of illusion that money isn't been spent. It's just been spent very poorly.

The Brumbies and Rebels would only have 2/3 top line earners with the rest all players that have only broken through in the past 18months (Hodge, Phillip, Banks, Uelese, Naisarani) that wouldn't command top line dollars or med/high to moderate maybe less earners. Trim Mafi and Parling from the squad come season end and the Rebels would be paying less than the Tahs come salary cap time.

Good effort R3. Not sure how accurate your guesses are, but it is nonetheless a top effort. Some insightful observations too.

Players go where there the opportunity presents, the recruitment flux at the Rebels has probably left a few players concerned they mightn't get much game time, or consistent game time in 2018. The Quade and Karmichael issue at the Reds probably has a few players seeing greater chance of playing time at the Reds.
If releasing players brings the Rebels back down towards the Salary Cap, then its certainly something which should be enforced. There is zero to gain for Australian Rugby having quality players missing out on playing week to week, and it would help the Rebels finances.

We will have agree to disagree - based on some performances in the past across all teams I do not see the strong desire to play except that being in the starting team usually brings an extra dollar payment for the game - amd once a player is on a contract - big deal if they play or not , they still get paid - by not releasing players , rebelss maintains its dominant pack and we should lead the Australian conference and thereby make the finals for the first time - there is no way we would give that opportunity away - we need to lead the conference and bonus points did it for the brumbies last year and may well do it for us this year

Having worked with a large number of players over the years, club loyalty or state parochialism will only go so far whilst sitting on the bench or holding pads. Every good rugby player I have met wants consistent game time and the opportunity to start and show what they have got. Playing landscape has evolved rapidly the past 12 months in Australia, that needs to be considered.

As for your second part about denying the release of players, well another reason the Salary Cap is a farce, it’s designed for two reasons, talent equalisation and ensuring clubs spend within their means. And if your attitude is consistent with what you’ve said above denying the release of players who want to go to other teams for game time.. well that’s the kind of selfish attitude that has Australian rugby in the shit state it is in.

If players want to go, and the clubs over the salary cap, then they should be released

What club in its right mind would release contracted players to strengthen it's direct rivals if it wasn't obligated to?

I don't recall the good old reds , tahs, brumbies or force releasing players when the rebels first got their licence and the club was forced to buy overseas almost has beens to start the squad

One which is over the salary cap..

But also one which considers the well being do the players, It’s happened plenty of times in Australian Rugby. Tom Banks was signed to the Reds in 2017 on a WTS, Brumbjes offered a superior contract he was released. Similar to Shota Horie, he was initially contracted to the Reds before the Rebels offered a superior contract and starting opportunity so the Reds released him as well. There’s even been a case of mid-season releases, a Brumbies player to the Force whose name escapes me.

A bit of a false equivalence there.........

And can you name any players that those teams wouldn't release?

One of the major reasons the Rebels couldn't attract too many players from other Australian teams was because of the RWC......... It was hardly surprising that they were able to lure more top line players the following year.

Anyways, if there really are players that want out, it would be in the Rebels best interest to let them go.......... it's not going to make for a good team culture, and being the Real Madrid of Super Rugby won't necessarily guarantee you success - just ask the 2017 Reds, or the 2010 Brumbies, or the Waratahs for most of their existence.

So that’s what this is about? A grievance from 7 years ago.

Mate, Australian rugby and the market place has evolved rapidly since 2011, shit it’s completely changed since 2016. I don’t think dwelling on past issues is going to help Australian Rugby improve.

Australian rugby needs to start working together, there’s being enough blood spilt the past 12 months:
