I completely understand the dilemma Knox is in, but it is a dilemma of their own making. As soon as you professionalise in an amateur (schoolboy) competition, you can't win. Spend big bucks to professionalise & you have to win. And when you do win people throw rocks at you for spending money...

I don't think there is necessarily much heat on coaches given that the majority are employed as teachers not rugby coaches. Williams at Knox is an exception - if you are employed solely to deliver a schoolboy premiership and you fail to do so then that criticism is valid. One out of three is...

Or a testament to the strength of funding/resourcing of GPS rugby in my honest opinion…..That having been said (I'm a Waverley parent so everyone is better funded than us - no crocodile tears though as it's enjoyable being the socialists of the private school scene) I thought the Scots Waverley...

Was at the Scots v Waverley game (Scots 36-26 I think with a Scots try at the death) & must say that the game was very good to watch. Both teams had more than a few players out but they both came to play. Perhaps because it wasn't a trial game the standard was much better than pre-season &...

Was there as a Waverley parent & must say that the game was very good to watch. Both teams had more than a few players out but they both came to play. Perhaps because it wasn't a trial game the standard was much better than pre-season & because it's not a CAS or GPS game there was virtually no...

Not sure you understood my point. I understand sports masters arrange games for teams when schools don'tt have the same number of teams in each age group. My thought bubble related to schools that have overflow players, rather then overflow teams. Rather than 10 reserves, there may be merit...

Care to expand ? Who is 'they', how regularly is it done, what age groups, what schools ? I'm aware it exists in the junior school but haven't experienced it to date in senior school.

I wanted to road test an idea on the forum after watching the Waverley 15Ds v Cranbrook 15Cs yesterday. Because Trinity and Cranbrook asked that their Bs be matched against Knox & Waverley Cs the Bs game was between Knox and Waverley (who also played against each other last week - they'll be...

Waverley 31 - Trinity 0 What a difference a year makes in schoolboy rugby. In the same game last year Trinity walloped the double-V and this year the favour was returned. Waverley was solid around the park and played good wet weather rugby, keeping it in close much of the time and kicking for...

    Sydney Subbies 2015

In this day and age trying to get a subbies club to field five grades plus colts is optimistic in the extreme. Sensible to let clubs there without the need to field five grades; if they didn't very few clubs would be able to meet the requirements. Part of a wider malaise in Sydney rugby -...

    Sydney Subbies 2015

Brothers won 1st grade in a scrappy but well-mannered affair 18-13 with an unconverted try 5 minutes from the end. They were without 5 regulars for the first few weeks so the win will come as a welcome relief. Brothers also won Colts, Petersham the other grades. I must say that Camperdown...

Yep, they've been trialling a Year 10 prop which is a big call - he's the one who keeps getting popped, so it may be that they have been giving him a run in the trials to see how he would perform. He's solid for a Year 10 lad but kids grow so much over the next two years that he's being...

Thanks for posting video - wonder why you couldn't see Waverley tries but seem to have captured all New tries at both ends of the field. And how did that New player with the lift tackle above horizontal and drive (right in front of the ref btw) stay on the field ? Scrums definitely showed...

Williams cops a bit of stick because he's employed as a professional rugby coach presumably to win the competition. If he doesn't achieve this then it is right to ask why people's hard-earned money is being spent to pay a professional coach who is unable to better amateur, part-time coaches.

Saw 16s. Newington had two teams, Waverley four. Waverley C/D beat New in a close one. In next game New 16A played Waverley B and led 17-0 at halftime then Waverley As ran on for second half and scored 32-0. Final score 32-17 to Waverley. Pretty talented Waverley 16A team.

Do I sense a slight smell of inferiority complex/defensiveness ? Second time in the thread that Shore supporter wants to tell everyone theirs was an 'understrength team' beating the defending CAS champions. C'mon guys it's still trials so we don't know who was in or our of the Cranbrook team so...

The last paragraph is really what the long-term problem is about. I would argue that this is the reason why shrinking numbers of players at school are a massive worry. It is a marginal game in the highly competitive Australian sports 'market' and the true believers that stick with it through...
