AIC Rugby 2019

yeah mate, I have three boys there so have an interest.

They would have aspirations to be AIC for sure but no real expectations unfortunately. They have challenges with depth in this year's senior cohort and probably next, as these were the years that lost a lot of students to the traditional schools when it was first decided to convert Nudgee Junior to a senior school. From Year 10 onwards, the depth and talent is very good.

Athletics is probably challenged but I hear most schools are heading that way. Is there an AIC Athletics comp?

We are basically filling in where we can and playing who we can at the moment. Playing underneath Downloads in the cricket (so playing GPS Schools) and will be very hodge podge in rugby. Its tough getting consistent games all the way through to our junior school, or even just the senior school. At this stage we have three age groups playing in a southside 6ers 10s tournament and we end up playing a bit of tournament stuff (including Ballymore Cup).

We've built a bit of a relationship with Sunny Coast Grammar this year and will play them again a couple of times, as well as The Armidale School, Downlands, BGS and TSS (I expect not their 1sts) and will pick up a few other games along the way.

Mate it is a good school the smart move would be for AIC to go from 8 to 10 schools which could still work with term lengths perhaps ATC and Downlands being the additions. Does not bother me as I don't my sons are now our of the system.

It is always hard to judge the AIC teams in preseason as boys are still plying other sports so teams are either fully stocked or have half the boys unavailable.

As someone who has strong connections with SPLC, I can confirm that there has been a dramatic push for an improvement in culture at the schoo, especially in cricket this year. However, you cannot call SPLC out for only being good at swimming. The cross country and athletics teams have had a major improvement in the culture and performance with the school coming in the top 3 consistently over the majority of the age groups in the past few years, with them coming tied 2nd in the aggregate for XC and 3rd aggregate in the athletics. 1st volleyball last year also did very well in coming second overall and tennis winning the aggregate for the 7th year straight, heavily due to the culture set by the head of tennis. I certainly agree with the concerns over the sporting culture at the school but I can confirm that a number of sporting cultures are improving at SPLC, especially for XC and atheltics. However, I do think that ATC must be included somehow in the AIC over the next few years and whether SCGS could somehow have a part in AIC as well for the more northern schools.

Every year yall sleep on SPC and every year they do better than predicted. I see them taking out the premiership again this year.

Not sure that SPC has been flying under the radar in recent years, since about 2014 they've had some strong teams and some great individual players which has definitely improved the standard and competitiveness of the AIC First XV comp.

So, for this year, who are likely to be SPC's guns, apart from your halfback? How many are back from last year's First XV?

Maritz to Wavell is certainly a big loss.

SPC should have 4 current year 12s returning from last year with 1 year 11 returning. Also, should be looking at the State Championship undefeated premiers Met North with strong performances from Sturgess, Lennon and Booker.

Now it just comes down to how well strong culture can continue on for SPC as seen in the past few years

Iona scored 9 tries and 8 goals to nil in the AIC trial at Suncorp Stadium. I think it was 35-0 at half time and one way traffic.
Pats played a couple of last years First XV off the bench and tried hard all game but Iona look like a well drilled team.
Too early in the season to write off SPC because their scrum was superior, but they have some work to do on tackling.
Iona look to have a strong midfield again this year and some hard working forwards.

They might have comparable or even better talent across a number of spots - as other Schools also might - when comparisons are being made to MCA

But MCA are the front runner and will remain so as they have over the last few years - if for no other reason because of superior conditioning and playing a more fundamental brand of Rugby

Until other other AIC Schools get up to speed here- the divide between MCA and the rest will increase

Yes it is bit of a shame that it has become a question at the start of each year as to will anyone else be able to mix it with ASH...but there is always another team out there that wonders if they might be the little team that could...from what I saw yesterday Iona might just be that team in 2019...

It was 3 way premiership last year??? Ash in the mix only because of a lucky break when Iona were beaten!

That's an interesting way to put it, does this means that SPC only beat Iona last year because of luck?

Losing a home game 32-19 with the premiership on the line doesn't sound like bad luck to me, but maybe I'm wrong.

Have to agree with macdonaldclan, does GO not remember Iona 65 ASH nil...2015 I think

Was that an imaginary game?

I had to look it up, Iona have probably beaten MCA 3-4 times over the 20 years of AIC competition but I'm pretty sure you'll find that the biggest ever scoreline in Iona's favour over MCA was 43-16 in 2013.

Of course, the next time Iona beat MCA was in 2018.

And @Torpedo Punt, given that you're from SLC I wouldn't have thought you'd want to be dredging up First XV floggings from the past.

There seems to be a few sensitive people around here given that there's not been a single post by anyone from MCA claiming favoritism, or making any claims at all, in relation to this year's First XV competition.

MCA will be a good team in 2019, but it's eminently possible that one or more will be better.

G, I was being a bit flippant wasnt I.....Ill go with your actual numbers....

But when you say ...there's not been a single post by anyone from MCA claiming favoritism, you need to scroll back to GO says "But MCA are the front runner and will remain so as they have over the last few years - if for no other reason because of superior conditioning and playing a more fundamental brand of Rugby"....

So I think a flippant response is appropriate.

I really do congratulate MCA on their consistently good program but you just cant say they are THE front runner....yet.

There isnt any real trial form on the board yet that tells us anything other than Pats are going to struggle.

Not being sensitive just hopeful....

Hold your guns ASH fans...at least for now.
