AIC Rugby 2019

G, I was being a bit flippant wasnt I...Ill go with your actual numbers..

But when you say .there's not been a single post by anyone from MCA claiming favoritism, you need to scroll back to GO says "But MCA are the front runner and will remain so as they have over the last few years - if for no other reason because of superior conditioning and playing a more fundamental brand of Rugby"..

So I think a flippant response is appropriate.

I really do congratulate MCA on their consistently good program but you just cant say they are THE front runner..yet.

There isnt any real trial form on the board yet that tells us anything other than Pats are going to struggle.

Not being sensitive just hopeful..

Hold your guns ASH fans.at least for now.

No worries, but I’ll think you’ll find that GO is a BBC parent with a general interest in AIC rugby, not one of ours!

I think it’s a bit too early to being saying that “Pats will struggle”. It looked to be a strong performance from Iona but I believe that was the first hit up for SPC. I wouldn’t take my money off them - and looking at previous results they generally have never performed well in trial games (including last years premiership team).

Any other trial games coming up soon other than PAD v SEC next Friday?

GO you can still be one of ours, I note on the GPS forum constant excitement matched with the same level as disappointment by the BBC clan, dont wish to ask this question in that forum but while we have you on the line...has BBC ever won ? serious question.

SLC have lost Yr 11 Met East Prop to BSHS, didnt need that but it happens. Moving forward lets see if AFL has several of the boys fitter than ever.

Lauries sound like a quality team this year. So now we are getting close to the start of the season who are the players to watch (across all schools) in 2019?

Lauries got up 10-7! First time that Lauries were playing at full strength. Downlands boys were massive! Lauries playing Villa in a trail on Saturday, should be an interesting one, Villa have a good team this year.

Good win however. Need to consider that downlands rugby program is not in full swing with the first official game not until term 3. Would question how much preparation the country boys would of had leading up to yesterdays game? food for thought.

Lauries d Downlands? That appears to be a good win to me. Didn't Downlands beat MCA last year?

Lauries however have one premiership in 11 years.

2018 - SPC, Iona and MCA joint premiers
2017 - MCA
2016 - Padua
2015 - Padua
2014 - SEC
2013 - Iona
2012 - SPLC
2011 - Padua, MCA and SEC joint premiers
2010 - VNC
2009 - MCA & Iona joint premiers
2008 - SLC

As many repeat each season "it is hard to win seven finals in seven weeks". You have to be tough, have depth and be very focused each week. SLC v SPC at Shorncliffe in round 1.

Not really m'man

I think it was 1953 where we shared a Premiership with 3 or 4 others because it was a washed out season and only 1 or 2 games were played

any team predictions so far guys, and what year 11's do we expect to play 1sts this year?

Prediction re Villa ... at least 5 or 6 year 11s will play regular 1stXV , these are the core of Villa’s strong age group with 2 or 3 returning players from last year with the balance being last year’s 2nd XV who ran 2nd to MCA.

They know how to win and will trouble some sides. I can’t see them winning the Comp but could finish top 3. They also have a strong age group in Year 10 and so are more likely to build towards a genuine chance in 2020.

Villa finished middle of the pack last year and will probably finish there or there abouts in 2019. But if sides take them lightly they may be in for a shock. The rugby development program is really starting to bear fruit and at least Villa are becoming competitive , which is good for the school and the overall Comp... and I can’t help saying it but massive well done to Villa taking out the 1stXI cricket premiership undefeated and winning the aggregate. Sport is definitely improving at coorparoo.

Good stuff . I will look forward to watching them play some games this year

The game against SPC was iona’s first hit out for 2019. They fielded 2 year 11 backs in Condon and Kwok Sun Barker as well as Pepe and Shelton in the starting pack with Yak, Jagga and Wong off the bench. I’ve heard Wong wasn’t part of the preseason and was drafted into the lineup on the Thursday due to injuries. Iona should get stronger with some injury returns and could certainly challenge for a back to back title. They should also be up there in 2020 with 7 year 11 boys having some game time already. Looks to have been some focus on conditioning for the Iona boys and this is was evident in the heat at Suncorp. Will be interesting to see how Iona go in the Ballymore Cup - probably a better indicator of form than the game against SPC.

Jaden Shelton goes real good , glad to hear he started at 2. I thought there was another lad in front of him though as first choice hooker ? Maybe I got that wrong ... Shelton is a good player though so glad to hear. Agree Iona should be strong but my concern would be their depth across the park if they get a few injuries. Fair concern or not ?

Villa V SLC - wet weather footy - both sides look rusty. I know it’s Villa’s first run but not sure if Laurie’s have had a game before this.

Score was SLC 12 - Villa 10 - 2 tries each

Not a bad hit out for a trial. SLC gave away some stupid penalties by verballing the ref.

Not sure about another hooker but Shelton should start, if not at hooker then possibly as prop. They’ve had a big squad training and there seems to be a bit of talent outside of the 15 starters. The majority of injuries are usually in the forwards and the starting 8 are probably more workmanlike than spectacular; there are several players who could come in if required. The backs look pretty slick but a couple of grade 12 boys must have missed out for Condon and Kwok Sun Barker so together with some of the better grade 11 backs there is probably enough in reserve to cover most injury scenarios. I know they had trials at Iona today but I haven’t heard of anything happening other than one ankle injury and the squad from Suncorp last week was excused from today’s trials.
