Not RA, but it’s related.

NRL have confirmed they’ll host the State of Origin in Auckland in 2027, NZ Govt have coughed up a hefty fee to host Origin at Eden Park.
Pretty amazing that SOO will probably be able to pack out the stadium in a small city with very few Aussies for a game between two Australian states with no Kiwis playing. NRL is a pretty unique competition.

Be interested to see what amount NZ govt has paid (if any), usually the council pays the majority I be surprised, as there was one report there was $5 mill being offered. But even that haven't heard anything over here that it's actually a fact. But could be something in it, guess it all about bringing in Aussie $s.

It would bring in money. Aussies flying in from the East coast for a couple of nights.

I suspect this game would be pushed to a Sunday instead of Wednesday night which would encourage more people to go on a Friday and spend the weekend in NZ.

5m feels a pretty low number for Origin which is the biggest spectacle in Aus sport now and they get to dip in 3 times.

not a bad move from NRL especially given NZRU have cut the humber of test matches that the All Blacks are playing in NZ over the next 24 months in exchange for the $$ from a South Africa tour. Meaning more consumer $$ locally to spend on tickets for events and more money from govt/council to spend on bidding to host.

Between now and 2027 when the Origin scheduled the All Blacks will likely only play 3 matches in NZ. And from those it could be 1 or 2 games against a Tier 2 under the Nations Championships.

NRL is actually worrying me more and more - each week there is another big idea planned. For a game mainly played and administered by apes, the strategic thinking coming out of the game has stepped up a level.

We can scoff at them all the time (I generally do) but they are a commercial powerhouse. They've claimed the former rugby countries in the pacific (or are close too) and are growing quick building up quite the asset base. They dwarf us in this country and can basically do what they want.

Very good crowd in a city without a Super League team and they expect to be beaten by Australia.

At least English Rugby League spread the game a bit. English Rugby seem uninterested in sending a game North.

It's a good result for them this time around, but I have a feeling it'd be significantly boosted by Aussie expats and the spectacle of seeing the Kangaroos in general. Not sure it would be a particularly sustainable crowd long term, particularly against other opponents. Their previous biggest crowd for the ashes was 57k in '94, I don't think they've had much like with big crowds otherwise, outside a couple of world cup matches.

Not calling bs but I do find it odd that the only mention of SOO coming to NZ that I can find on a NZ website is on stuff.co.nz & it goes no further than saying it's been reported on an Aus site. No direct quotes from anyone in the RL community or the political side of things whether Local or Centrall: even with it being a long weekend I'd have thought Auckland's mayor and/ or the Sports Minister to have been approached for comment, which doesn't appear to have happened.

Edit: it made 1news tonight but with several caveats incl they'd need a law change to provide for a 9:30 kickoff if played midweek as that's the current cutoff time. Both Auckland Council & a Minister who's name/ portfolio I didn't catch were quoted that they were in talks/ negotiations but that it was by no means a done deal.

So the official announcement hasn’t been made, sounds like fait accompli with the reports a an agreement-in-principle between the ARLC and the New Zealand Government had been made, once the inks dry I’m sure we will see some backslapping.

I’d say it’s surprising the NZ Govt would throw $5million to host a NRL game, but that’s the nature of NRLs commercial might these days and the inroads they’re making in NZ.

Mind you, I like WOB still not hearing much over here, but could be? 5 mill is only change I imagine to what Gov't put into having an America's cup etc when they did, and think they chuck a few mill to help bring concerts etc here.
If it is true, makes me have a smile that these cities in Aus are supposed to be throwing 20 mill etc for SOO? Seems a little unlikely if they even contemplating 5 mill. Perhaps there has been some exaggeration form someone (NRL press?) at times

Was interested to hear Mike Cron saying although he finished with Wallabies, he is still contracted to RA on advisory roles. But thing I think I liked best, Peter Horne and him are doing is they going to run a few camps of 20 tight forwards, where Cron will work with them on scrums lineouts etc and have a pool players ready to go as back up for super teams in case of injuries etc, building from bottom as he says.. That is very good use of recourses etc by RA in my opinion.
