ISA Rugby 2013

If I may I would like to give out the "Most Dumb Award To A Coach".. Without saying his name but the Rugby Union Coach of Auggies Top Side, who Stupidly played His Top NSW Fast Winger and Manly Sea Eagles Holden Cup Winger in a TRIAL against Waverley and has Broken his Jaw ( out for 6 weeks ) by an Opposition Player who looked to have not a lot of Experience under his belt. Which is fine to play All these Boys, that's what trials are about and Accidents do happen ! But WHY would you Risk your Best Back in a Stupid Trial ! A lot of people are asking the same Question, including Manly Sea Eagles who are not happy !

I won't comment on this specific match or incident as I don't know specific information.

What I would say is that you usually play all your players in trials as trials have 2 functions: 1) to work out who the best players are and 2) to have your best players getting combinations together before the season starts.

In theory, any time a player takes the field, there is some risk of injury. Playing a player carrying an injury in a trial for that player to aggravate that injury would be silly, but a broken jaw can't really be foreseen by a coach. I assume that he would also have played trial games for the Sea Eagles at some stage this year and could just have easily been injured in those.

It's tragic for the boy concerned and he has my sympathy regardless of whether or not it affects his rugby league career.

Yes, trials are there to help you sort out your best team and to build combinations. But you can't go resting players from them just because the result doesn't "count". Otherwise where does it stop? Say Bloggs is likely to play NSW Schools - do you spare him the ISA games so he doesn't get hurt? Injuries are part of Rugby and it has always been the case that sometimes good players get hurt in minor games. Or training. It just happens.

There are generally 15 players on the field, all of them very special. Going fast doesn't make someone the best There has to be a first match of every season for every player, trials are an important part of that.

Giving a wooly about the sea eagles not being happy, did they choose the school or are they paying the school fees? I doubt it

Maybe he who shall not be named should have sent some expendable players out maybe you could suggest who should have been given the opportunity to break their jaw instead or the u14 chess team

Why would you expect a coach to be so disrespect to his opponents and host? This is a trial fixture to make selections and I would assume that Waverly fielded their best available. I understand that Waverly led for sometime in this match and showed some promise.

Ill second this quote - my comment was in no way a dis on Chev (heck I was an ex chev student back in the days we had 4 grades playing) . I would just LOVE to see Chev back in Div 1 - the school has such a proud rugby history . things really hurt from what I heard when they lost the boarders. But its awsome to see they have a strong team this year, any side that is 1) playing div 2 and 2) beats a div 1 team is no mean feat and nothing to be sneezed at.

Pius had a close loss to Cranbrook so maybe it is just a case of Chev being a very strong div 2 team this year . good luck to them . Ando who's coaching them this year? Still Reevsie?

Nah Changed this year. Reevsie is coaching 16's and Mr Williamson is coaching Firsts at Chev.

To go into a full blooded competition match with no or little game time against well prepared opposition is likely to be more risky. Whether it is a trial or invitation or competition match for any school all students would be asked to participate as fully as they are able. This is part of being in that community.
There was a Waverly lad taken off the field on Saturday as well with what initially appeared to be a serious injury, he too will be missed by his team and he will be disappointed to be out for any given amount of time.
There is a risk to every game, I am guessing the player made himself available and particpated knowing this. I think suggesting someone else should have done the job (taken the field) for him insults both parties and implies others a more expendable.

I understand but its just a shame for any player to pick up injuries just in trials, especially ACL which are season ending.

"Always a tough gig to select a team based on one trial and as has been noted in the past especially when one trialling team is only one school allowing combinations to work better than the mix of Div1 and Div 2 schools. The advantage is selection will lie with the team that all play and train together and hence selections are made difficult based on the fact that many of the palyers in the mixed team do not even know each other"

Can't answer these questions, but have heard trials will be run slightly differently this year! They won't run the Auggies team out to play all other comers! BRinging it back to a slightly more level playing field!

Well the young Oakhill boys certainly had it tough on Saturday, 6 mistakes cost them 6 tries and subsequent conversions. Couldn't penetrate the Barker defensive line ( which was rock solid). Could only manage lateral movement. They also couldn't get their hands on the ball and when they did they kicked it away trying to gain some field position, as they spent most of the game either in or just out of their own 22. There was however some solid performances and they will be alot better prepared for their next encounter against Trinity. A couple of weeks should see their injured guys back on the park which will help the backline. The forwards need to muscle up and have a dig as against Barker they tried to go wide to early. All in all a good learning experience for the young blokes.

I remember watching my son in the barker 'A' side verse oakhill in the u14s and u15s the past two years and there was a farely big and solid forward in the oakhill side that caused our forwards some difficulties. johnrugby do you know if this is one of the current year 10 boys playing first 15 this year?

result from the st pats trinity game, st pats victorious 22-19 in a very physical local derby. More pleasing for some was the well behaved crowd!

Tony Abraham at no.8 was dynamic scoring three impressive tries. St Pats defended very well and held out Trinity for the majority of the first half, given a large number of penalties conceeded and high possession for Trinity. although St Pats were quite scrappy at times it is a promising start to there trials and ISA run.

St Pats have trials against both Waverley and Knox in the second week of holidays. Should be interesting to see St Pats fairs and the strength of CAS

I thought it was odd for them to try and schedule a trial during the week especially on a Thursday as its MCS sports and a lot of the school is committed. Oh well, a pity. The more the better in terms of season prep.

Yeah would have been good to get another trial game in. St Andrews at Chev First up in 2 weeks. Wouldv;e been to get some more prep coming into this game but oh well!
