Cold day for rugby! If you're in 3rds and out of finals contention this sort of weather tests the commitment a little. Sorry coach I woke up with a sore throat. You'll be right ring one of the other boys...

Watched most the second half of the Royals v Tuggies, Royals got up 19 - 15 I think in the end. Royals scrum looked great and overall Royals seemed to have the upper hand in the forwards. Tuggies backs looked slick and brutal in defence. Royals seemed to be forced into playing very deep and Vikings often charged up up shut Royals down well behind the advantage line. Tuggies discipline was poor. Hyne got a yellow card for throwing a punch that didn't connect. Assume it would have been red if it landed. Vikings also gave away a poor penalty late in the game to let pressure off. I get the sense if the game went 10 minutes longer the Vikings win but similarly to the uni game, the red men left their run a little too late. Not sure Craig McMahon is the right option at 10 for Royals. He looks past it and cranky and threw some horrible passes. Pedro is a boss at 9.

Overall I'm not sure what to make of the game in terms of the upper hand in finals. Obviously Royals got the points but I think Tuggies would have seen a lot to like.

Anyone know what happened in other games? Uni v Easts will be interesting.

Pedro is class, always has been. Russ Ingram often joked that he'd marry his daughter to him if immigration ever caused trouble, just so he could pick him.

A lot of our resurgence in this half of the season is because of Ben Johnston. Lots of weakness elsewhere, and I expect it to all fall apart any moment now.

A win's a win mate but yeah it wasn't convincing. Do you know if Muirhead, Cussack and Sione will be in blue come finals time? Handy inclusions... any others expected back from injury?

I'd expect Sione back (edit: there) in blue next week to be honest, Sio will be back and Mayhew has reminded us all of his class. Cusack probably won't get a Wallabies spot, so I'd expect him too. Muirhead is a unique option in Australia, so him getting a Wallabies call up isn't an insane idea, but I still think he will be available. Also reckon all of them will play in the NRC.

They aren't the solution, though. We couldn't win a lineout if the opposition stood still, and some of our backs (much as I love them) think of tackling as a nice theory more than a skill to use - they're obsessed with shepherding guys towards the touch line. We lack options who will straighten up and run parallel to the sideline. When teams work out their short kicking game, we really struggle to avoid going backwards, and often a chip kick over the line turns into a penalty when the sweeper runs away from his forwards and gets pinged for not releasing. I don't know what the core issue is, but something is rotten.

It was Smith, Hyne still isn't playing.

Geez he looks like Hyne. Clearly Vikings need a good barber to come on board with a sponsorship. The livestream on Saturday didn't have any commentary but took the refs mic feed. Was interesting to hear but was a bit muffled (and the ref was blowing hard!) Actually, not sure who he was but the ref did a pretty good job from what I saw.

Uni-Norths 26 def Royals 25 with a late drop goal

So if I'm reading it right is it fair to say that with 2 weeks till finals, Tuggies, Royals and Uni are pretty much locked in for 1, 2 and 3.

Qbn look most likely to grab 4th place unless Easts can roll Tuggies in the last round?

Is that a fair read of how it sits or can others sit it falling a different way?

I agree I think QBN are most likely to finish 4th. But I wouldn't count out Easts. If they topple Gungahlin this week then they're a real chance to upset the vikings at home in the final round.

The other interesting storyline is Gungahlin seem to have had a bit of a resurgence and could conceivably still make the finals.

Assuming Uni-Norths edge out Wests this week, that would put them at 49 or 50 points and pretty much secure a finals birth.

If Gungahlin can beat easts this weekend and QBN takes a loss against royals (with no BP) then Gungahlin would have 42 or 43 (with a bp) points sitting them in 4th with a round to play.

Then, the final round becomes bloody exciting!

QBN has the BYE and picks up 4 points finishing on 46. Gungahlin would then have to beat Uni-Norths (probably with a bonus point) in the final round to qualify (depending on for and against).

Of course all of this is null and void if QBN beat Royals on Saturday.

Last 2 rounds could be very interesting.

Wasn't at the game, but friends there say that the scoreline really flatters Queanbeyan. Royals starting to peak at the right time, hopefully.

Don't Queanbeyan have the bye this week and pocket the four points? If so, they look to be cemented into the 4th spot or higher depending on Uni-Norths result.
