bring back rucking

2 teams plus reserves seems ample to represent 6 teams. 46 players out of a pool 90 starting first XV players… I’ve never quite understood it. I don’t doubt that there is more player depth in the gps but when it comes to best v the best then the additional 2 teams feels redundant

Interesting Jika story Joker. Jika always admired the way Joeys played the game and always emphasized that although they were tough opponents, they were always fair opponents. He thought they played a beautiful form of the game.
Jika hated showboating of any kind. He disliked the boys wearing boots which were anything other than black, so when the boots with the two white stripes down the side came out in 70s, he went through a phase of making the kids paint over them with black paint or shoe polish. Eventually he learned to live with them (but still hated them).
He insisted that the firsts play in an identical jersey to the rest of the shool - this was also one of his big things. He said that if you are representing the school you should wear the school jersey and that a differnt jersey was showboating.
He even thought 'round the corner kicking' for conversions rather than the old school run up and kick in a straight line was showboating . . . until he had a particularly good kicker and he changed his mind.
He had something to do with inventing the black and white cardboard corner posts used in rugby fields for a long time.
He was an old Shore boy. After serving in WW2 (which he often talked about) he came back to Australia and played for Sydney University. Then he won a Rhodes scholarship and went to Oxford where he captained the rugby team. This lead to him being selected to play rugby . . . for England - so he actually played against Neville Emery the sports master who was playing for Australia.
His book 'Let's Talk Rugger' or 'How to Play Rugger" (same book different title) was published back in 1950 and was a textbook on how to play the game and he was still recommending it to new players decades later
Jika Travers, both admired and loathed depending on one's outlook. But what is certain, is that Headmasters like Jika, are not likely to come our way ever again. He turned Shore into a Schoolboy RugbyPowerhouse, rivalled only by Joeys. His style of play was one of forward dominance, based often on ten man Rugby ( Hawker's 1st XV avoided this and Played Running Rugby, due to the talent in the backs).

He was both an academic, a sportsman and a War Hero. Love him or hate him, he was an exceptional human being. .

Personally I would like to see the return of the GPS v CAS v CHS matches. Each association had three teams. There was also a shadow team of players who could be called up to the 3rd XV if injury's occurred.

Small point. You will note that the AAGPS 1st XV's posted up here by member's all have a common theme. That is they contain players from all SIX AAGPS schools. While there are years when one school will dominate a team (Think 11 in the GPS 1st XV in 1990 from Joeys) there seems to be players coming from from all six teams.

Can the same be said about the CAS? Do we see Aloysius boys in the CAS firsts? Are there three schools that just dominate the CAS rep teams? Please enlighten me.

Has anyone noticed the uplift in the Newington College rugby system?

Well, Lachlan Fear, Head of rugby has made this possible. It may not show on the field but behind doors he looks like a hardworking man, looking to bring the Newington Rugby program up. Don't write this Newington team off, they have the potential and coaching staff to work towards the shield, especially with the mastermind, Lachlan Fear behind it all.

My tips for this weekend:
Scots 25+
Shore 7+
Kings 19+

Also, can i get your thoughts on my comment up the top ?

Stiffy Griffy Out

I totally agree about your comments re: L. Fear

He is always friendly and accommodating to the refs who turn up to referee the earlier games, and he loves his rugby...

Ditto J - I remember the Waratah Shield games on Wednesday afternoons where the CHS schools would play a great expansive style of rugby.. but alas that competition is now just a distant memory..

Joeys have as close to their preferred XV fit and available as they have had all year for tomorrow’s Round 1 clash with Shore at Northbridge.

In the front row, blockbusting props Jack Barrett and Harry Moxham have worked in tandem all through the trials campaign with hooker Atticus Heaven more than holding his own, and stabilising the lineout, since coming in for Jack Walkom after the loss to Barker.

In the second row, the hardworking Quinn Dickinson has been ever-present through all trial matches and is partnered by Darcy Fogerty, arguably Joeys’ form forward of recent weeks. With Eamon Doyle passed fit to play only yesterday, he will instead play No. 8 in the 2nds to see if he can get extended minutes out of his injured knee after a disrupted past 6 weeks.

In the backrow, key ball carrier No. 8 Harry Darling is supported by the energetic Patrick Young in 6 and the versatile Archie Campbell, back in the 7 jersey, with Robbie Hunt moving back to the 2nd XV after showing he is more than capable if called upon.

In the backs, preferred half pairing Hwi Sharples and Joey Fowler play only their second match together this season, whilst in the centres the rotation at 12 continues with Oscar Jorgenson in off the wing and back in the 12 jersey where he played the first two trials (with Patrick Young and Caleb Murphy also having 2-3 games at 12 this season). The underrated talent of Ronan Leahy remains in the key 13 jersey.

The brilliant Max Jorgensen is at fullback, supported by returning winger Will Malloy (after 6 weeks out with a broken hand), with Miles Minto maintaining a place on the other wing.

There is a lot of uncertainty how these teams match up. For Joeys, the equation is pretty simple. Start with intensity and lower their error and penalty rate which has seen them give up possession and easy points all too often this season.

Should be a classic with good weather and two teams looking to run the ball.

Hi all.
My source from St Joseph’s tells me the Shore posters have been put around the screens for all the Joe boys to see. Bad move shore. Only giving these boys way more motivation than they already have. P.s not a good move having an orange haired kid on the poster!

Is that the "showboating" that the headmaster Jika disapproved ? Advise to Shore ( and to all other schools ) : Don't poke the bear or as Joker might say the hounds. Joeys don't need motivation. Keep your heads down, play hard and you might get the win. Otherwise .... ????

After a four-year hiatus, Jokers fearless predictions return with all its culinary glory. For those born after 2000, this is called “humour”. Some even may call this banter. But is all served up on the platter called, “I kid because I love”. Enjoy.

Scots V Newington at Hadrian’s wall.
This season has been one of great grit and test for both teams. Scots storm-troopers have enjoyed limited success but they are currently in the lead in the bragging, a position they are accustomed to. While suffering losses to lesser opposition they recorded a recent win against the Shoremen at Sterling Bridge. This lifted their spirits no end. Coupled with the usual Plumer road chicken burgers there has been a new macrobiotic diet of raw vegetables dipped in “special” sauce that has added more muscle to the team. They are expecting a huge game from their huge boys. Newington have been true to their recent form by mucking up the ingredients in their team. Plenty of different combinations have been tried, but the Wild Wookies of Stanmore have yet to settle on a winning recipe. They have the usual island advantage, they have plenty of Ota’ika, Lu Sipi and Pele Sipi to feed them with, but these wookies refuse to play with one another it seems. If they do decide to play nice then they will be a dark horse in this year’s competition.

Kings’ vs Riverview at Castle Gray Skull
This game is vital for both teams. Kings have been viewing this season as one of great promise. A handy team that can score from most places, they took it to the cattle dogs early in the trials. Tis only a piece of magic from the Joeys 15 being the difference. Kings have beaten View and Scots in the trials and this has been achieved on a steady diet found in the Rolls-Royce Limited Edition Picnic Hamper that mummy brings to the boarding house. The fare being chicken burgers from Daei Persian Fast Food, Sainsbury's Chicken Liver Pâté and Brays Cottage Pork pies flown in from Norfolk UK. Riverview, who traditionally at this stage of the season are claiming they are the favorites because God told them, are primed for a big season ahead. Feeling they were robbed of the 2021 title; the wild wolves are looking for redemption. There has been an emphasis on cheering with the lesser lads almost drowing out the true catholics two weeks ago. While countless hours have been spent on the practice paddock and flaying themselves with whips in the chapel, the boys are ready to put the loss to Kings in the rear-view mirror of the brand-new Range Rover that daddy bought them for their birthday. I find it hard to go past Kings on their home paddock. I feel the bigger, stronger Kings boys will prevail. Such a shame they met in the first round.

Shore vs St. Josephs at Stirling Bridge

Shore will not be a push over this season. There has been a new found belief with the school. This “hope” was item 27 on the scavenger’s hunt list and finally someone found it next to the homeless person they were going to spit on. Well, a good rocket from the new headmaster seems to have done the trick. Fueled by an exceptional diet of chicken curry pies, spinach and feta sausage rolls and the incredible hamburgers found at Five Points Burgers (don’t forget the milkshakes!) the lads have responded with wins against Oakhill and Trinity. A narrow loss to the dark empire the only real blemish. They will be confident. Joeys though have ticked along as always with the boys being fueled by the Spotless catering staff and countless orders of Uber eats arriving after hours. Usual threats of cold showers, long mass times and a run to Woolwich Wharf have seemed to work as the boys look sharp, just not as sharp as they should be. Joeys have as well tinkered with the team due to illness and injury. They are yet to play their “best game” and there are rumours the team has been foxing during the trials, not showing their true colours. Saturday will be the big reveal and with the firmer foot underneath, Joeys cattle dogs should be ruthless. The stubborn Shore cattle though will hold their ground as always and this is why we admire them so.

Watch out for young gun on the wing for Shore Ollie Mackellar. Is in the North Sydney bears system and is tough to tackle, even gives kids 2 years older than him headaches. Also Marshall L who has proved he is ready to play firsts at only 15

Hi Dusk

Just saw the team list for Sat.

D.Wright is back at 10 and J.McGregor shifted to 15. O.Townsend ( Captain of Rugby ) fit enough to play, 10 for 2nds.

D.Wright's first game back from injury in Trial 1? McGregor hasn't done much wrong at 10 and will be ok at 15 but S.Taukomo could be wasted at 14 if doesn't get involved or enough ball?
O.Townsend should be 10 or 13 in 1sts if he is fit enough.

Forwards are ok. Hope they worked on their set pieces.

Thoughts ?

Wyvernboy
I don't mind having Siteni on the wing. As long as Daniel Wright gets the ball quickly out from the rucks he will be involved with the game, and be a player that scots will certainly have to worry about.
