QLD Colts 2023

The U18 Junior Colts lightening series begins this Sunday at Sunnybank. Great initiative of the BJRU to provide a bridge between junior and senior rugby. It is a shortened season as most players are either committed to school rugby programs or will be playing in senior colts. It gives Colts coaches an opportunity to see the next wave of players coming through, plus gives the players a good pre-season hit out before the school rugby or senior club rugby seasons begin.

In previous years it had mainly been the traditional Brisbane clubs entering teams. However last year saw St Peters use the competition as a pre-season hit out for their 1st XV boys. This year the competition has been expanded to include teams from the Gold Coast as well as other schools such as Kings College. All games are played at the one ground each week and each team plays 2 games a day. Games are shortened to accommodate this. It creates a festival vibe each week and allows supporters to watch all the teams play. Strong clubs such as Brothers and UQ have entered 2 teams. Souths are the reigning champions from last year, but it looks like the competition will be strong across all teams. This years teams are:

Palm Beach Alleygators
Helensvale Hogs
Surfers Dolphins
Brothers - Navy & White
Easts
Ipswich Rangers
Kings College
Souths
St Peters
Sunnybank 1 & 2
UQ Heavies - Blue & Maroon
Wests
Wynnum Bugs.

The first and second rounds (yes they play 2 rounds per week) of the Junior Colts lightening series got underway at Sunnybank in what was a great day of rugby. With a decent crowd in attendance, the canteen was ticking over all day with teams setting up camp around the grounds as games took place across Sunnybank's 3 fields.

Games in this competition are 40 mins (20 min halves) and each team plays two games. There are 2 pools with the top 2 from each pool progressing to the finals. Souths begun their defence of the title with a 21-0 win over Brothers Navy, followed by a 19-12 win over Kings college from the Gold Coast. Wests looked strong winning their opening games 17-12 against UQ Blue and 22-12 over Brothers Navy. Their clash against Souths next week will be crucial for both teams. Elsewhere strong performances by Easts winning 28-19 against Brothers White and 26-0 against Surfers Dolphins. UQ Maroon won both their games with a 19-14 win over St Peters followed by a 24-12 win over the Alleygators from the Gold Coast. Biggest win of the day belonged to Wynumn defeating the Helensvale Hogs 39-5. Impressive in a 40 minute game.

So after the first 2 rounds Pool A has Wests and Souths 2 from 2 while Pool B has Easts and UQ Maroon also 2 from 2. The next rounds will be played at Albany Creek next Sunday.

He is very 1 dimensional. Can only play 10. I believe he was tried at 15 in Colts 1& 2 last year and it was a massive fail from all reports.
He does however have a massive boot on him.
Interesting… obviously 1 dimensional obviously has different connotations for different folk… fact from a filth source is Finn was a 17y/o regional, year 12 student in 2022 that only played the backend of the colts u20s season with one Colts1 game in 10 & a few starts/part games in Colts2 in 10 with two short stints in 15. Is said to have had nil experience playing no.15 prior and coaches report he has a good rugby head for his age and his transition as an underaged regional kid to Colts was a success… far from a fail, but it is all about perspective rather than fact, for some…

A sad reflection of the lack of numbers coming through the junior grades, that Colts 3 is only a 6 team competition this year. This weekends round features 3 byes for Easts, Wests and Souths. Norths, Sunnybank and Bond with no Colts 3 team.

Isn’t there also colts 4 comp which is played on Thursday nights.

I think I saw in the colts 4 competition Wynnum has entered a team.

maybe the QRU can continue to look for opportunities like this to diversify the teams in the lower grades colts competition
