I think to call the 3rd and 4th graders the heart and soul of the club does a great injustice to the lion's share of 1st and 2nd Grade players that know that professional rugby is beyond them but play that level to challenge themselves and to see just how far they can go.

They don't do it for cash or accolades but because they love the challenge of playing a good standard of the game.
All Rugby players play Rugby because they enjoy the game .
But to say that 1st grade players (& some 2nd graders ) are not influenced /enticed/motivated by money is being a little naive.
How many 1st grade players (& some second graders) are not paid to play for their club.
Compare this to the 3rd & 4th graders who get no money, but still challenge themselves each week/year, & take just as much pride in turning out for their club.
These days there is quite a bit of player movement between the clubs ,& what proportion of these players are 3rd & 4th graders ?
It's not unreasonable to equate this with the measure of club loyalty which each player shows.
Many of the "characters" in each club can be found in the lower grades .
To lose them is to lose much of the heart & soul & spirit which drives each club & is a significant part of each clubs lifeblood.

In the know I think.

I think everyone is right here. There are indeed many very very loyal 1st and 2nd graders who ad a great deal of club spirit. They, unfortunately get tossed in the same box as the mercs that play, not for the Shute Shield money cause that wont make you rich, but for the lure of the next tier.
The 3s and 4s are just made up of the majority of the "good old boys".

I don't think any of us disagree with you en_force_er. But the fact is 1s and 2s are not under threat, and trust me this idea is far from dead in the eyes of the ARU.

I would not be surprised if they try it on if not for 2013, certainly 2014 as the ARU are currently reviewing all clubs and asking many questions at this very moment.

latest rumours.............

Warringah had 25 players at training on thursday march 1.......Lee Grant could confirm
Penrith had 59 players at training on thursday march 1............Fibro Insider????
both of these were for grade and colts and combined..........
Parramatta had 81 grade and 48 colts at training on thursday march 1. Perhaps Ole Two Blue could confirm

Also, Gordon colts numbers (or lack thereof) have forced them to pull out of this weekends trial v Randwick

Can't comment on woodies colts numbers, but pretty sure the trial v wicks was cancelled due to the ground.

Woodies have had good numbers at both colts and grade training but Knuckles was talking about the Highlanders trial against Randwick.

Last weeks grade & colts trials between Randwick & Gordon were cancelled because of the rain. This weekend , there is only grade trials between the two , scheduled.

Randwick played Gordon in trials in hot weather both sides didn't show much that would strike fear for the stronger sides. Both clubs will say they had players missing and it was only a trial etc but still didn't show too much
Randwick did look fitter and stronger than Gordon and won about 6 tries to 5 something like that. Randwick won lower grades fairly easy and Gordon looked like they had just enough players for 4 sides where randwick looked like they had enough for 5 sides

Only recognized Mitch greenway in Gordon team they looked like a bunch of young kids. Randwick had most of last years 1st and 2nd grade players and had a new 10, 12, 13 who looked like they might have something. They played Tim Wright on the wing which is surprising with Shaun Foley not playing this year and Ethan Ford didn't play in the trial would have thought Tim would have gone back to 15 where he has been a great player for years.

Anyone with inside knowledge on which players the Woodis took for their WA tour? Was it 1st/2nd Grade players, or mixed club guys

It is a mix of players. Eastwood referred to the squad as a development squad. I don't think there are too many first graders in the squad. It was open to those players who were prepared to pay the cost and could get the time off work.
They played Perth Gold yesterday - I understand 3 tries each but lost 23 - 17?

And in saying that mitch greenway is only 22 must be a very young side
