Randwick 3rds #7 'Jack Hayson', who played NSW Schools last year. Moved from Warringah 1's to play at Randwick and from all reports on the forum was killing it in their 1's?

Big clubs that have so many players play them in different grades thru the year to qualify them in all grades. Having all teams in the finals, enables you to juggle players between teams to play. An advantage of having all teams in the finals.

^^ Many consider Jack Hayson was unlucky not to make Australian Schoolboys last year. As there was no Australian Schoolboys A team chosen last year, which he would have had a good chance of making, he is eligible to play Colts 3rd grade, unlike others who have played there and subsequently been found ineligible.

There is a great little thing in the competition rules about "Open Selection" where if a club can manage to get two or three teams into finals contention, then those clubs get to chose the grades the players are in for finals based on "merit" rather than qualification by the usual criteria (rule 33.3 - 50% of the last 7 games, or rule 33.4 - automatic dispensation to rule 33.3 if they have played 60% of the season in the lower grade).

To explore the previous week by week "merit" selections of Jack Hayson in 2015 for a moment. While at Warringah, he played rounds 1-4 in Colts 1. After transferring to Randwick, he played Round 5 in 3rd Grade, bench for 2nd Grade, Rounds 6, 7, 8 and 15 in Colts 1 and bench for 2nd Grade, and rounds 9 to 14 starting in Colts 1. Generally the evidence suggests that he is a Colts 1 (or better player), reinforced with his selection to play for NSW Gen Blue this year http://www.greenandgoldrugby.com/nsw-20s/.
Apart from the Francis Brown thing at The Corporation, all those in the NSW Gen Blue U20's play Colts 1 or are regular 1st or 2nd Grade players. Selecting Hayson in Colts 3's seems about as strange a phenomena as Waratah Paddy Ryan being nominated by The Corporation for their 2nd Grade Bench.

Many would say that Jack Hayson is on par on merit with the other 3 loose forwards nominated in Colts 1 for the Wicks this week, (Hughes, Woodhill, and Kamp) and he probably deserves a start in the Colts 2's on merit if those three are playing in the Colts 1's. Word on the street is that he is coming back from an injury, and like many clubs, a graduated return to play is done through the lower grades, as per Easts with Rhys Brodie and Jarome Mackenzie in their 3rd Grade team, and The Corporation with Francis Brown and Guy Porter in Colts 3's before turning up in higher grades.

On the subject of 2014 National Championships players in Colts 3rds, George Lehman (Uni) played for Combined States last year, and Patrick Pelligrini (Wicks) was in this years NSW II's along with with Jordon Iremia (wicks) in Combined States.
Meanwhile Tyler Pritchard (souths) has played 13 games for Colts 2 and only 4 for Colts 3rds (failing rule 33.3 and 33.4 eligibility, but qualifies under 33.5 (c) as a hang over from finals week 1 open selection criteria when the Hobbits had Colts 3 and Colts 2 in the finals), and Justin Fish (Uni) with a fair history of Colts 1 and Colts 2 games under his belt until round 12, when it appears he may have been injured, pops up in Colts 3 and Colts 2 bench for the QF's and is listed in run on for The Corporation in Colts 3.

Ahhh Open Selection. The same little rule that allowed the Shoremen to nominate Jakob Sedgeman for their Colts 3's last week although that may have been a piss take and not so subtle dig at The Corporation for previously using an ineligible but fellow Coastie prop in their Colts 3's.

Bottom line, all clubs seem to take advantage of Open Selection "merit" selections and graduated return to play programmes after injury. Also just because a fellow was "good" last year (in the eyes of one group of selectors), doesn't guarantee that they will be viewed the same by others the following season.

Finally if a chap "plays up" at training, or is late to games or somehow transgresses the various "no dickhead" rules and protocols at their club, they can find themselves playing in a grade lower than what the Trainspotters and keyboard selectors think they should be in, or what their skills set warrants.

Jack Hayson hasn't played since round 15 -- injured I assume.
Which is possibly why he's returning in 3rds this week.

I'll be a very interested observer of him in 3rds on Saturday.
If match fit, and in anything like the form before he was injured, he'll be very hard to handle in 3rds.

There's a News Article on the NSWRU website which details the following:

COLTS SATURDAY Forshaw Rugby Park
Colts 1
3:00pm Randwick v Northern Suburbs
Colts 2
1:20pm Randwick v Gordon
Colts 3
11:50am Randwick v Gordon

It should also be noted that the grand final of the inaugural u18s Colts comp is being played tomorrow at Forshaw Park between Southern Districts & Wests at 10am.

Let's hope this is the first of many grand finals for this competition and that all clubs work hard towards fielding teams next year and all future years as it is a critical pathway for those not attending private schools.

Watching last week, Uni are very vulnerable in 1sts and feel Gordon were very unlucky not to get the chocolates. I'm tipping a beasties upset if they can repeat last weeks first half effort for a full 80 minutes.

I agree Red. I think easts were lucky to come away with the draw - second half let them down... but norths did play well.
It would be great to see an easts\norths grand final.

Southern beat West Harbour 15-10 in the U18s GF.

Jack Hayson didn't play 3rds, he played all of 1sts except for the last 6 minutes having been yellow carded.

Wicks won all 3 colts games comfortably in the end, but 2nds and 1sts were tough battles and credit to both Gordon (2nds) and Norths (1sts) for really putting up strong opposition.

Well as expected the two teams that have perfected the art of recruiting/buying players with scholarships are the two best colt clubs. Unless the rules are level this will continue indefinitely and frankly nswrugby does not care ask Farr Jones. How the other clubs can live with this farce beats me.
