Eastwood v Uni

Colts 1st Grade
We'll Eastwood 1st Grade Colts were certainly primed for a contest against the establishment, Sydney University and we certainly gave it a shake!

The score at half time reflected a team that for the first 40 minutes let the opposition have the majority of the possession. We didn't treasure the ball and made too many mistakes with Sydney University taking every opportunity to turn it over with a very quick counter attack and moving the ball wide at every opportunity.

We began to gain confidence in our own ability. Eastwood began to see the key to unlocking the Sydney Uni stronghold their defence was to put your body on the line, good placement of the ball, low body height when cleaning out and not forcing the 50/50 pass made for a great spectacle.Unfortunately as quickly as we gained momentum it was lost.

At the 15 minute mark in the second half, Eastwood were starting to gain some ascendency. A heavy knock saw prop Alec Pappalardo have an early shower as well as Adam DeSantos (Second Row) having to leave the field with a bloodied nose. At that precise moment we lost one player for 10 minutes to the sin bin-after the ref's patience had been sorely tested with issues at the breakdown- not coming through the gate, staying on our feet and not listening to the refs calls about letting the opposition player time to release the ball not helping our cause - we were down to 14 men for 10 minutes.

The final score of 43 to 14 was disappointing but the coaches and players realise that if we are to be competitive in this competition that there is plenty to work on and the realisation that there is the need to play rugby for a full 80 minutes.Best and Fairest3. Colts 2nd Grade
The first 20 minutes, 2nds managed the start we were hoping for against Uni. Solid work from the forwards allowed 2nds to apply pressure to Uni’s line. 4 chances went begging, including one with the line wide open, only our own handling denied 2nds valuable points. As the half unfolded, all that hard work went astray as missed tackles provided Uni with space to run as they rolled in 4 trys before the break.
2nd half commencing with players were giving their best, unfortunately our error rate provided Uni with numerous opportunities and we paid the price. It was a good sign to see 2nds lift in the last 20 minutes and battle it out with the Uni forwards.

A number of blindside breaks by Jordan Gillespie, paid off, although one break and certain try was pulled back through an appeal from the Uni players that Michael Clarke would of been proud of. 2nds were finally rewarded for their efforts as they crossed Uni’s try line via #7 Zack Simpson.

Eastwood 5 – 45 Uni

Pretty tough gig, with the bare minimum of numbers taking on the university machine. But to the credit of the team they tackled well and dominated some passages of play - culminating in a very good try to Daniel Loneragan

However, overall we didn’t have enough ball and spent too long defending wave after wave of university attack.
University played the game at a frenetic pace which points to a need for us to lift our game tempo in coming weeks both in attack and defence - something we will work on at training.

Special mentions to Cameron Fish who made himself available after a week of rugby in the CHS zone carnival, Michael Negline who played his first full game and acquitted himself well and Josh Loneragan who as the youngest player in team got some good game time and didn’t let us down. Well done lads!
Also a special thanks to the boys from second grade who made themselves available so that we had enough players on the field.

Round 9
Colts Match Preview
Eastwood v Manly
T.G.Milner

Colts 3 - 5th Place
University proved too strong for Colts 3 running out winners 39 – 8 in what was a tough outing and our first loss in five matches. We have an important clash this Round with a Manly side that is sitting in 8th place and had a big loss against Randwick 5 – 50 in their last match.

They are 6 points behind Eastwood and with Southern Districts and West Harbour in between they will want to get a win against Eastwood to keep in touch with the top half of the competition. Just as importantly Eastwood will want to keep hold of fifth spot and stay in touch with the top four.

Both sides need to win this match which adds to the intensity that should result in a close match. On past results Eastwood should get their fifth win of the season.

Colts 2 - 8th Place
Colts 2 were no match for the impressive University side and were beaten 45 – 5 dropping back one spot in the process. This weekend it is Manly who have won just one game and a draw putting them in 10th place on the ladder. They were also well beaten on the weekend going down 8 – 55 to Randwick having previously been beaten by University13 – 55 and 12 – 18 to Eastern Suburbs. They drew was with Penrith and beat Parramatta way back in Round 1.

Eastwood need to get up against Manly if they are not to fall further down the ladder. Penrith, who would be favoured to beat Parramatta this week, are just two points behind us and could jump ahead if results go their way. Ahead of Eastwood by two points are Eastern Suburbs and West Harbour.

A victory over Manly and losses to either Easts (play Warringah) or Wests (play University) would see us advance on the ladder. It is a critical match for Colts 2 and one they should win if they repeat their effort against Eastern Suburbs.

Colts 1 - 6th Place
University showed why they are one of the leading teams in Colts 1 with a 45 – 14 win over Eastwood last Saturday. The loss keeps us in sixth spot but this week's opponents are only two points behind us with a game in hand (against Norths who are undefeated). This week also sees the team (Souths) above us by just two points play Randwick and on form they would not be expected to win. A win over Manly could see us jump into fifth and give us extra breathing space over Manly.

Manly have three wins this season. Last week they lost 14 – 59 to Randwick and in previous Rounds have lost 23 – 33 to University and 15 – 21 to Eastern Suburbs.

They did have a surprise win over Gordon 26 – 21 and show they are not to be taken lightly. Both sides seem evenly matched and both will be wanting to get over last week's loss and get another win under their belt.

News from the cuzzies are that his 1st match in 3rds scored 2 tries set up 1 with an audicus flick pass / 2 halfs in 2nd grade last week in 3rds playing well then got a knock & came off .
The news I'm getting is he will be on the move next season & is on the open market

How many players aren't on the open market?
He's had offers from other clubs but prefers to stay at West Harbour.
Must be a big chance to play 1's there next year.

Player of the day goes to Matt Lewis our U18s coach for going with Jacob to hospital and staying with him, then taking him home when released. Thanks Matt! Your efforts and duty of care are appreciated & acknowledged.

If it's the Matt Lewis I know then Southern Districts would be mad not to nominate him for ARU Volunteer of the Year. A true servant of the game who is heavily involved with Souths & Menai (I think). On top of this as a State primary school principal he is also on the general committee of the NSW Schools Rugby Union as the convenor of NSW Primary schools rugby (PSSA). Massive unsung hero!

Keeping it with the Canines..............

C'Dog - I suspect that is also the same gentleman that has also been a critical component of many PSSA Rugby squads over the years - and if memory serves was co-coach & manager of a successful Sydney North team that disposed of a pretty fair CIS team some years ago.

If it is he - an outstanding nomination !

I believe Souths have lost 3 players from there starting 1st Colts side
Add this to the other 1st colts players out the day at Coogee just got a lot tougher. I am sure the boys will give it all they have got in all colts grades but it might not be enough unfortunatly.

Eastwood v Manly. Woodies would be disappointed with their performance last week against Buildcorp, but they will have noticed that the MMM were given a gold old fashioned hiding by the Wix last Saturday. I'm tipping Woodies to sneak home in a very tight match.

Eastwood vs Manly- Manly in a close-fought battle by 10 points

Manly over Eastwood in a close one. Eastwood in 2nds and 3rds

Woodies colts are improving as the season progresses, and their 39-21 win today v Manly could have been a lot more if a few more passes had stuck. They were the dominant team by far.

Their first two matches of the season were tight ones and the results went the wrong way due to a couple of missed conversions/penalties, so their form this season may be deceptively below par to the casual observer, based in the results cards alone.

Their backs are getting more cohesive and penetrating opposition more effectively (first-up tackles could still do with some work), and their forward pack continues to be strong - the woodies scrum pushing Sydney around last week (with the starting team and with no yellow cards) and matching or dominating opposition packs so far.

Highlanders v norths was a solid game as expected. The greens won 3's by less the 7, the reds won 2's by less than 7, And the ones looked headed for the same way. Greens lacked someone to spark their attack, and seemed to tire as they did spend more time defending. The 16 for green looked done after 10 minutes. But was a quality game to watch. Both teams played in the right spirit, I just think red looked like they wanted it more.

Was certainly a great day of rugby. The Battle of the North it seemed lived up to its hype with many boys playing against old schoolmates for the win.

Some scrappy play and discipline towards the end of both 2s and 3s games, but with the scores that close, was some truly entertaining games of rugby.

Very good display by Norths, and it is easy to see why they remain undefeated. Got very willing when defending the try line. No-one knows how this happened but thirty stitches and an early end to his game.

Staggies will have to get used to this pressure as the rest of the competition try to "put them back in their box" :)

I was out at St Luke's park Concord for the Uni West harbour Colts.
3rd Grade - West Harbour big boppers came out firing - consistently slaughtered the Uni scrum and crossed the advantage line easily while pulling Uni up quickly. Uni struggled to hold the ball, more scrums. West harbour looked the goods with a 3try lead, (I think) and then ran out of steam. Uni made some useful subs and the rest is history. Uni ran away with it.
2nd Grade - all Uni after they battled through the early enthusiasm of West Harbour. Uni had an improved scrum and were able to compete strongly with the West harbour strongmen at the breakdown and set pieces. Uni were too quick around the park and West Harbour ran out of steam. West Harbour put together some very good mauls!
1st grade - mostly as above.
West Harbour played with plenty of grunt and attitude, but just did not have the fitness.
Played in good spirit, none of the sideline silliness you sometimes get and a pleasure to visit. Thanks for hosting a great day.

OK - the official halfway point has been reached, allowing for the wet weather round.
In all 3 grades it looks like various combinations of Randwick, Gordon, Northern and Uni in a distinct leading cluster on the tables.
I cannot see this changing but am open to correction if you reckon your team will be late flyers.
I am surprised Southern and Manly have not been stronger this year so far. Eastwood look like they are getting some momentum up. Easts are still in the running. All four of these clubs will need to get some big scalps and win the close ones to have any chance of playing finals.
Randwick have their next big test playing Northern, Gordon and Uni consecutively. They start with the undefeated SHoremen next Saturday at Coogee.
