I think when you look at results over the last few rounds you will see how well both Newport and Lindfield have gone against the top 4 sides. No real blowouts and some highly competitive games. This is good for subbies all round as an 8 team comp is prob a few teams short of the desired number.

For me it’s the fact that Newport fronted up last night, similar to Lindfield the night before to play there catch up game. Didn’t take the easy option after a long season in games that didn’t mean anything.
While Drummoyne and Colleagues have chosen not to replay/forfeit the same games.
Someone is always going to be on the bottom and not win many games that’s just the nature of the comp, but the signs are good for these clubs that they can get guys on the park right up to the end of the season and not forfeit when things get tough.

Not the ideal season for the Old Soldier this year in terms of on field results however I can’t knock the effort from the entire club. Speaking with club official, at particular points during the season the injury toll had hit 50 odd blokes and not once did they forfeit or throw the toys out of the cot just got on with the job which resulted in many lads playing 3-4 games on a Saturday.

The lads will come back firing next year, the question that needs to be asked is do you drop a Lindfield/Newport to Div 2 and end up with a 2023 type Lindfield season or 2024 Newport season? Not sure that’s the solution for Division 2.

Well done HH for making the mid week trip & thanks for the two referees for fronting up on a Wednesday night. 2 entertaining clashes at Porters as playing under lights seemed to get both teams worked up & they were certainly willing encounters. 4ths featured some absolute bell ringing hits from the big HH Fijian boys, much to the delight & giggles of the crowd. Newport a little unlucky with a couple of late decisions that may have seen them kick a penalty on the bell to win it but it wasn't to be. 3rds another physical match with HH defence holding strong throughout most of the first half but Newport pressure eventually told and 14-0 to the good guys.

In terms of DIVs my take is it is pretty cut and dry around promotion/relegation.

Was for giving a serve to a female ref through the touchjudge.
Prob wasn’t the worst thing in the world. There was more niggle during the game that could have been better handled. But it’s subbies !!

Remember the game and was a strange one considering Newport played great footy when most wrote them off. Very strange to have a crack at the ref after a win. As Pfitzy will say no ref no game and the female ref wasn’t perfect (which ref is) but she will no doubt rise through the ranks and had a great feel for the game.

Believe if and I say if your boys want to stay up HeavyD then they deserve a 2nd chance as don’t think UNSW or Petersham would do much better than Lindfield, Drummoyne or the Breakers.

Would love to be a fly on the wall at Subbies. The latest outside of Drummoyne in recent years to be on the chopping block was Mosman and look how they’ve responded with all grades plus Colts in finals.

Very strange to have a crack at the ref after a win.

This year i watched from the sideline - flag in hand - as a team questioned every call the referee made, abused him to his face and showed general disrespect to the officials and opposition.

While winning comfortably.

Predictions for Div 3 Big Dance

Colts: Knox (1) v LCOI (2): Both Old Boy teams and this game will be played in a private school style, with technical proficiency at the breakdown and set piece with and high levels of fitness. There is no real serious size in either team. LCOI had the tough match against barker last week compared to Knox who cruised to a 60 point win over a 14 man Beecroft (red card in the 1st minute). I think Knox's class will see them win, but i wouldn't expect a blow out like last week with LCOI always to stay in striking distance. Knox in a tight affair. Knox by 8.

2nd Grade: Hills (1) v LCOI (3): Hills are undefeated having almost securing a bonus point win in every game. Hills are the clear best team in the comp, an impressive achievement when their 1st grade came 2nd. I imagine there are a few Hills players that could have swapped with their one counterparts. LCOI just scraped the win last week with a kick to win it after the siren. LCOI lack star power but have consistent quality across the team a no clear weak players which you often see in the lowest grade of the division. I expect LCOI to put up a good fight but to be beaten comfortably by the class team Hills. Hills by 19.

1st Grade: Beecroft (1) v Hornsby (3): Beecroft started the season winning most matches by 40 including beating Hornsby by 50+ before struggling as Europe and injuries came calling with Beecroft losing to Hornsby (double points) and Hills in the second round. Hornsby started the season a tad slower before picking up and have only lost the one game since round 7. Hornsby play the Northern Hemisphere style of set piece dominance supported by a 10 with a monster boot, Beecroft play a more stereotypical Michael Cheika Aussie running rugby style . I think the Beecroft pack will step up enough to keep the Hornsby pack in check which should allow their backs to score just enough to beat a tough Hornsby team. Beecroft by 5.

Fletch - out of interest, from western sydney subbies club perspective have you had much to do with Simon Kacimaiwai and the new Western Sydney program? I would have thought the whole thing hinges on getting the schools playing rugby which then feeds all the different clubs. Have they openly said that their aspiration is to get the Emus back into SS at some point in the future?

4ths lost by 4, a penalty goal wouldn't have helped. Losing your 10 to the cheese with then game on the line may have impacted them as well.
Very strong 4th grade game across the board, youngsters v old hard heads, but geeze that HH 15 was good, was the difference.

They look to have lost 4th grade but won 3rds and stay last in Div 1 CC, not that that is the sole determination of promotion/relegation.

No it isn't the sole determinant. Although it should be. This forum shows that you can make up any narrative you want to support club Y going up or down. It should be clear from the outset what a club needs to do to gain promotion or avoid demotion. It shouldn't come down to a few power players using politics and playing favourites to decide a club's fate.

I don't think anyone with any sway at Petersham would expect subbies to consider promoting them next year.

Based on the fact they appealed the decision to be dropped to Division 2 a couple years ago, it doesn't surprise me they want to to be promoted and they will rely on the club championship ladder to back them up.

Is promotion in the clubs/competitions best interest that's a tough one.
