Quick count looks like 22 players. That means the Brumbies and Tahs will provide 23 between them. That's 7 players from their best XV's that miss out.

My thoughts are obviously Potgeiter, Mogg, Arnold, Betham and 3 others.

I've got Horwill 10th in the pecking order, 9th when you factor in Carter being injured

Skelton
Simmons
Jones
Dennis
Coleman
Timani
Mumm
Arnold

On what aspect of his game is Horwill lacking in your obviously unbiased view. I'm intrigued to hear this one because I'd love to know where you claim all these guys have superiority.

I'm not sure that's how it works. I doubt he had a set limit and had to factor in the Brums/Tahs before selecting this one. Cheika's not even going to deal with this squad yet given he's still busy with the Tahs. I think he could still name a revised TRC squad.

Qwerty you're fucking insane, biased and have zero clue if you can seriously say Horwill would not make a 60 man squad, and be one of the top 8 locks right in Australia. That's basically every first choice lock minus the injured ones anyway.

Normally I would agree with that assessment of qwerty, but he is right; Horwill has done zero to get a Gold jersey. He should not have even gave made this squad, like so many others that Cheika clearly likes, for some unknown reason.

I'm not going to go through each one but I can summarise up Horwill's current game: lazy, slow, ineffective & inaccurate. He is still very good at the set-piece so maybe he's there to help out the others.

Horwill hasn't been great this season, but he's shown enough to be in the mix. If nothing else, his set piece work has been solid, and that's a very important attribute at the world cup. Plus all of the other options have either never played a test match, or aren't genuine locks.

UGH TOO MANY REDS

In seriousness, it look like Cheika wants to see what these blokes can do under his instruction. Does look like there will be more than 45 in this squad, however.

I also read an article saying the 3 overseas players will be included in TRC squad so that makes only 20 from Brums/Tahs. If that was the case there's going to be some pretty unlucky guys. The only ones who should miss out from the XVs would be Robinson, (Potgieter/Hoiles), (Betham/Naiyaravoro), Arnold, Vaea, Mogg and then there's the possibility of Mumm making it. Maybe Dennis & Alexander miss.

Shown enough? He checked out the moment he announced his departure, unlike others who slogged it out ALL season.

In a 45 man squad it would have been good to see a few more players picked from the Rebs and Force - particularly backs. Stirz, Debreczini, Godwin, would all be considered future Wallabies. The game plan of the force cruels their backs. Get me into a positive camp and see what they can bring to the table. It's not like it's going to cost a shitload of money. Timani also probably should have had a look in at a training camp, if only to add some starch to the contact sessions.

Thanks.

Amazingly this lazy and slow guy has higher tackle and run stats than Sam Carter as I posted earlier.

When I'm in the office tomorrow I'll give a comparison for the rest.

Do you watch games or make up your mind based on what you read.

If he's checked out how to you consider Sam Carter who's getting through marginally less tackles and runs?

Certainly Horwill has aspects of his games that are lacking, but if these claims that he's lazy and has mentally checked out are correct, the stats would show him to be well down on the others.

I don't think much of young Carter in this squad either, but since he is hanging around, I would rather him get the experience. Leave out Horwill and perhaps Timani would be a much better selection, even for a first cut squad.

Just for comparison,

Horwill has played 770 minutes to Timani's 880. Considering Horwill has missed a few games through injury, that says Timani is playing around 55 mins per game.

Timani is offering more ball in hand with 129 to 85 carries and much more on metres run.

Horwill is offering slightly more tackles per game with a total of 86 to Timani's 90 in 110 more minutes of rugby.

Where Horwill shows superiority is his 6 line out steals and 33 takes to Timani's 0 and 3. An important aspect for a lock. He also has 7 turnovers won to 2 which has always been a strong feature of Horwill's game.

Is Horwill the same aggressive and physically dominant player he once was? No he's not. Is he a decent set piece and work rate lock. The numbers appear to say he is.

And as to Dean Mumm? Fucking hell.

In his 33 tests has he ever had a good test? Compare that to Horwill who actually did have a couple of good tests last year (though obviously not enough of them).

Cheika likes a versatile player and this may see Dennis get a spot over other locks especially when he will be taking more specialist 7's than 6's
