The wish list for 2022 has to be:
A head coach with a strong track record
A defence coach, the defence this year has been a shambles
A THP who is a strong scrummager. Doesn't have to be that dynamic around the park, we've got plenty of those
An experienced lock, to mentor and guide the likes of Douglas, Williams and Woods
A big strong, finishing wing (or two) who can tackle
I'm happy enough with the rest, just need guidance and mentoring

Apparently interviewing is about to start and the plan is to be done by the middle of June.

Not overly excited by that prospect. His Shute Shield (and MLR for that matter) record is based off his ability to recruit not necessarily his ability to coach. Also hasn't had much experience in professional setups.

Good thing what the Waratahs need most is recruiment! (and a defence coach) Sorry Gilmore - but as Defence/Interim Head, he has fallen short just like he did when given assistant at the Reds. Back to U20 where he shines.

Tahs need to avoid giving someone their dream job/promotion in the hope they can actually perform as a coach at that level. This is the 2nd time Gilmore has been given an assistant gig at a Super Rugby time and the 2nd time he has struggled.

Based on his CV, the logical step for Coleman is to be an assistant at the Tahs, not the Head.

It's one thing talking about player recruitment but that also applies to coaching recruitment.

One impacts the other and it's never a one step process.

Tahs might have to take what they can get in the next 10 days.

They will secure a few wins but are still likely several seasons away IMO from threatening the top of the AU section, let alone NZ.

Yeh Gilmore as defence coach has to be held to account but I also don’t want him publicly crucified as u20s shown he is good coach but Tahs experience maybe not ready for next level. I like RA approach of not throwing coach’s to scrap heap as just because not ready today does not mean they won’t be a top pro coach in years ahead with more experience. Hence Gilmore worthy of being retained in RA coaching system to continue his development. As in fairness Tahs a mess and not easy for a senior coach let alone a more junior coach early in his coaching career.

Haven't we had a series of defence coaches oversee bad defence.

I think recruitment is the number 1 issue. Not a single player that has left since 2014 has been replaced by a player as competent or better. It's be a rapid descent in playing stocks.

Been catch 22 nswru and tahs a basket case over that time which not added to quality players wanting to play for tahs..look at frost went to crusaders then brumbies...speaks volumes...tahs need to aspire to brumbies talent identification and player development as their egos may not accept this (biggest rugby state ego syndrome) but they could do a lot to learn from brumbies success...

No one else springs to mind though.

This was not a system issue, this was Gibson and Hore who completely effed up the roster over a number of years. This was poor coaching/recruitment and management from an incompetent coach and CEO who then bailed out when the damage was complete. All those bagging NSW and the NSW system are missing the real villains.

Years of wrecking will take years to repair.

Nah. It's easy to pin the blame on a couple of blokes who have left but it is definitely systematic as well.

There are just so many problems with NSW rugby right now, and they all look to be getting worse rather than better.

Ok then, happy to hear your views on the many systemic problems that are specific to NSW Rugby that aren't generic across the rest of Aust. rugby. Please be specific if you can. And would love to hear your solutions to these systemic NSW problems.....

Speaking of Reilly. Is he injured? He looked great in the trials. It would have been good if he had got to run out in the indigenous strip today. Even if he isn’t the first choice I reckon he would have played his guts out. And it’s not like the season is on the line.

Without doubt having hooper and hanigan back next year will add some much needed starch and experience - especially in defence. Thinking back I think the warning signs were there last year so hopefully quality coaches get appointed. Pity no nrc as lot of young and less experienced tahs players would really benefit from this.
