Okay I'll add some more:

Any stupid fuck who shoves his dick in a dog's mouth deserves all the heat they get and more.

Happy now?

Well if thats your opinion, fine. But why quote me if thats all you have got? Next time just post your thoughts without quoting anyone who doesn't agree if you have got no counter arguments, or if you don't want to focus on what they said.

Do people who throw their dogs out onto the street deserve similar treatment? What if some animal activist killed Joel for this, would he deserve that? I know they are 'extreme' questions, but they expose your 'extreme' statement.

There is a small warning for Rugby in all this though. One of the main reasons for the behaviour of ARL players is the propensity of "player managers" (in reality just used car salesmen with a morality bypass) to get their hooks into players with potential at an early age and "look after" them as they physically grow up and make their way into grade. This "looking after" generally involves doing all their thinking for them, bad mouthing anybody such as schoolteachers who dare to impose any discipline into them, and negotiating with the police to downgrade as far as possible the inevitable charges they will face for sundry acts of bastardry. All the while emphasising the importance of the manager in the players life and the unfairness of the world who are out to impose outdated morality on a superstar such as him.
The inevitable encroachment of the leeches into Rugby threatens to bring the same problems, unless a lot of thought is put in to control the power of the managers.
They will be the death of ARL (look how few ARL teams are surviving in country areas) and could do the same to Rugby without some care.

The story I heard about Lote was that there was some consensual sex after curfew with the daughter of some local sponsor. On the face of it, it is hardly up there with Keith Miller and Buckingham Palace but the Rugby heirarchy were looking for an excuse to punt him and that was good enough.

Haaa. First name basis styles

Speaking of Mungo and Lote, it was a damn shame what happened to him but thats all water under the bridge now. He's in great shape and seems to be doing well for himself and enjoying it. Just about to watch him play in the 4 nations as a matter of fact. Darling Streets finest, bred!

Union seems to have more "old and wise" heads associated with teams that wont let young guys act up as much as in League. There are obvioulsy times where the older players are not there but I find it hard to believe that if players like Mortlock or Humphries were socialising with a team they would let this happen. Another reason why crap like this happens is that League seems to give adulation to players who are "funny" (I use the term loosly) and they are always trying to one up the next guy to try to get some fame. It seems that the only practical jokes involved in League involve no brain power and usually are aimed at the lowest common denominator.

I fear that Union will not be too far from some of these type of incidents (maybe not quite as bad) as I think the type of player coming through is not as "refined or educated" (Sorry I sound like such a snob!) and will find humour in this type of thing. An example of this is young guys having food fights while touring with a team. I think going from highschool to professional sports is a huge step and not many people can handle this.

It is a worry. Maybe the coaching staff and unit managers should look to implementing some kind of mentoring program involving the older or even former Wallabies to build relationships and most importantly a sense of responsibility and dignity.

I'm a believer in any top line sports person having something outside of the sport, either work or studies, to keep them occupied outside of the game. It tends to keep them out of trouble.

The old adage of idle hands Hornet.

The fact that Rugby has a culture at the elite level of encouraging either tertiary study (look at how many S14 players are undertaking part time study) or some external venture keeps the Oz Rugby sides in good shape.

As for the excuses of alcohol fueled parties, I recall fondly my first year at Uni. I was drunk more than not and had plenty of fun, but that did not involve destruction of property (other than our own), defecating in public (though we did have an unfortunate soul who had imbibed too much and lost control of his functions and soiled himself), animals or unconsensual acts. I cannot accept that alcohol is ever a mitigating factor for such abhorrent behaviour.

im pretty sure Adam Frier once said in one of his articles that tertiary study is a compulsary part of RUPA contracts in some cases?

...Keith Miller and Buckingham Palace...

Well, they're both dead now so no need to be coy about it: Keith Miller and Princess Margaret were at it some time in the 50s. Miller was quite the ladies man and made the most of his charm and good looks, especially when on English tours.

It isn't the alcohol that makes people come up with these ideas, the alcohol stops you from saying no to doing them in public.

I am sure if you and your uni mates thought that doing things woth dogs or human shit was funny then at some stage you may have gotten drunk and done these things.

LB - I think there's a part of this you're not seeing. I reckon if you are decent sort of bloke, then some time in between (1) laughing your arse off at the idea of sticking your dick in your mate's dog's mouth, and (2) actually doing it, you think "naaah, that wouldn't be cool". Same goes for destruction of property, unconsensual sex, etc etc. These blokes don't seem to have that little voice of reason and decency speaking to them.
