i saw him playing for scotts in the 7 rugby tournament they held. Kellaway way by far the best scotts player and clearly looked to be first material so was shocked when heard he wasnt being picked because he was under 16. Not surpirsed at all to hear he is playing 1st and think he wil be a standout but maybe not at representaive level for another yr

You are indeed correct Malcsy. There are actually three ARU squads for 2010/2011 - the U16 NSW Junior Gold Squad, U18 NSW Junior Gold Squad and the National Gold Squad (NSW). In addition there is the ARU U16 Merit team. The fact that Kellaway was eligible for the U16 NSW JGS but was selected in the NSW NGS speaks volumes for his talent and potential.
The 2010 /2011 NSW NGS is loaded with talented boys many of whose names have been raised in this and the CAS threads such as Alaatoa, Dempsey, Foketi, Kulen, Lussick, Merriman, Roods and Vaux just to name a few, The full list can be found at:

Roods was good when the ball made it past 10

Thanks for posting those lists.
Pardon my ignorance but is it fair enough to say that the ARU thinks that the NGS squad comprises the best players in NSW and that the NSW JGS has the next best? And I take it that it does not purport to be a team squad; so they could have picked a lot of wingers and only one prop for example - or is that not the case?
I haven't looked at last years players to see who missed out but one fellow is obviously missing: 12. JJ Purcell of St. Augustines, the NSW Ones inside centre last year. Let's not go into why he was selected in 2010, but is it the case that they just don't think he is good enough? Fair enough if so, but I saw him a few weeks ago and he was the best player on the park. But that's not really my point - I just want to know what the lists actually mean.
Are there similar lists for other parts of Australia, anybody know?

The ARU Pathway includes the National Gold Squad and the Junior Gold squad. You are right in saying that they are not a team based squad.
The National Gold Squad is selected as the potential best young players in the country with the opportunity to gain higher level honours in year 11, year 12 and first year post school (ages 16-18). Approximately 100 players will be selected for this program each year throughout Australia. There might be 30 in NSW, 30 in Qld, 20 in Vic, 10 in ACT and 10 In WA for example.
The Junior Gold Squad selects the potential best young players in school years 9 to 12 across the country outside of the National Gold Squad. Approximately 175 players will be selected for this program each year.
For both programs training centres will operate in Sydney, Brisbane, Canberra, Perth and Melbourne. Regionally based players will be serviced remotely and via monthly training days and other underpinning programs in the regions within which they reside.
Selection in these squads does not rely on talent alone. the players must show the right attitude and commitment to continue with the programs. A player acn be cut at any time if the ARU coaches feel they do not show all necessary traits to be in the program

riverview captain wells was not at all impressive he was good around the breakdown but did not make an impact

Selection in these squads is, of course, by it's nature selective. Because a player is in this program doesn't mean they ARE the best, and because they are out of it doesn't mean they aren't. Think that message is equally important for players on either side of the fence. At the end of the day, ambitious kids this age should focus on putting 110% effort in out there on the paddock and giving all for their team mates, the rest should look after itself eventually. After all, one man's Elton Flatley is another man's Elton John...

When are you talking muffinman? there were a lot of comments on him last year being average however this year he seems to be a revelation. He almost single handedly beat Kings a few weeks back when i was watching him.
