I don't think it's actually about the act of missing things, think pretty much everyone here accepts there's a few errors per game. The problem most people had was the frequency and consistency of these errors. I 100% thought going into the game Owens was the best man for the job but he does have a rather weird habit of missing blatant stuff that happens right in front of his eyes and when a team also gets the rub of the green with 50/50 calls it makes that all the much harder to accept. The kiwis were the best team and should've won regardless but his performance just adds salt to the injury especially after the crap Joubert and the wallabies copped for ONE error that in real time was the very definition of a 50/50 call, Owens won't be under half the scrutiny Joubert received despite multiple dubious calls

Agree with that. But it isn't contextual to this match - World Rugby certainly need a stringent referee assessment process and consistency with which they release such information.

All the people bagging Owens need to remember the Wallabies were lucky to even be in the Finals to begin with after the Joubert and Scotland incident so have some humility and don't try and place the blame on others and appreciate how far your team has come this year instead. You should be proud of the 2015 Wallabies after the 2014 rabble. The 2015 Wallabies have been a fearsome opponent for the All Blacks and finally give us a contest where the result uncertain for the first time in years.

I have had a couple of hours sleep and time to ruminate on the game, so my thoughts:- Points 1 and 2 general issues over all the games.
1) The Wallaby Lineout was identified as a problem last EOYT. It continued to be a problem in the RC and no specialist consultant or coach came in to fix the primary set piece possession. The Wallabies were not secure on their own ball not only in this game but in most RWC games and many possessions were of poor to middling class. On top of that the opposition set piece was under no pressure at all. This is a glaring failure by Chieka IMO, and was a point of concern greatly discussed on this forum even if people wanted to focus overly of the presence or absence of particular players instead of technical performance.
2) The scrum, while greatly improved I just do not see Australia ever getting a fair and consistent appraisal by the officials in this area, possibly because they have no idea what is going on. In one re-set the ABs got last night McCaw was bound onto Sio and Franks was driving across at 45 degree right in front of Owens, before the ball was fed. The one area I'd like to see the TMO extended is the scrum, use the video ref to review the binding and set up and penalise them, if not do away with it altogether (which I never want to see as I love the scrum when it is policed and a fair contest).
3) The Wallabies looked stuffed at the outset. Slow and lacking in power. Same as they did in long phases against the Argentinians and especially against the Scots. The pool of death eventually claimed its last scalp. I also thought the work of Hooper decreased greatly as the games and competition wore on, in both volume and effectiveness. He was conspicuous in his absence and could that also be down to pure fatigue?
4) The Wallabies attack was pretty poor throughout, I thought. Very one dimensional and lacking in the depth support that we came to admire from the Tahs in 2014. In fact they looked very Brumbies like, and that IMO is just far to predictable and ineffective against the better defensive sides. I said it a month ago and am more convinced than ever that Larkham should go back to the Brumbies and learn how to coach a decent attacking line, and no I don't think the selection of Quade Cooper would have improved anything except him getting blamed when he started to try and do things on his own when there were no real structures around him, just like Beale did towards the end.
5) The Wallabies were never in this game, others will point to the score board and the tries the Wallabies scored, but it ignores the numbers of possession, missed tackles, territory, gain line success etc. I said to my mate at 30 minutes that it was game over, unless the Wallabies came out breathing fire in the second half, and unfortunately nobody had the gas to do it. Really great effort by the Wallabies to fight back but the ABs were just cruising at that point and one man down, they then stepped up and walked away with the game.
6) Finally I like many others am disappointed in the performance of Owens. The dithering over the yellow card to Smith for an unarguable tip tackle just allows those with a conspiracy/bias agenda to flourish, as was the non penalty for the head high tackle and quite a few other decisions/lack there of. The fact is that nothing Owens did or didn't do had any impact on the outcome as point 5 stands.
7) I am not too disappointed by the result, as I said last week the Wallabies have outperformed my expectations from last year where I fully expected them to be eliminated in the Pool stages. Even after the Eden Park debacle I remained fairly pessimistic about the RWC prospects. So all up I cannot be too upset, Chieka has done remarkably well to rebuild the side and play a different style in under 12 months.
Finally we could hope that the ARU would leverage off the interest that the RWC has generated, but we are talking about the ARU here.

My 3 cents for what it's worth. It's just echoing the rest really.
From the first minute you could tell the AB's were up for it, conversely the Wallabies lacked that high level intensity for much of the game. Perhaps they were tired, one less day of rest, 5th tough test in a row. I'd say so. Often the AB's take about 30 minutes to wind up the gears so it was ominous for the Wallabies when they started well.
AB's got their tactics right. Although Pocock did get a couple of steals early (one straight from the side, couldn't resist sorry), I thought the AB's targeted him perfectly. When possible they run at him and if he was near the ruck they flooded it to clear him out. The "Hardcock" combo was good for the first 20 but lost the edge after that.
This could be me making up bollocks but I thought I heard one of the AB lineout calls being "blue 7". They threw it off the top and ran at Poey (blue headgear, normally a 7) eh eh??? Anyway, as I've said all tournament, NZ has the best lineout in the world at the moment so I wasn't surprised that they won that area.
Scrums? Shit, most of them probably involved some form of angling, boring, cheating, ball twisting. AB's only got pinged once for it (we normally get pinged at least twice) so put that down as a win for the AB's.
As for our old mate Nigel, yeah, AB's got the rub of the green but only a couple of obvious pieces of bullshit, the forward pass and the Kaino head high. The rest were 50/50 calls and the kind of things a pedantic ref would ruin a game for. If Barnes (sans forward pass) was in the middle, Australia would have probably won I reckon. Owens suits the AB's perfectly (i.e he lets shit go). Took a ridiculously long time to make the right call on Ben Smith.
The B.Smith yellow card was a huge turning point (obviously) but the Carter drop goal (praise be his name) was the finger in the dyke. Such a perfect, out of nothing, hang on, I'll just change my pants a sec, beautiful piece of play. Iced it for us.
This was just one game too far for the Wallabies who otherwise had a brilliant tournament. Good shit from Moore and Cheika after the game too. Cheika should make every Australian proud as punch.
Highlanders won the Super 15 and the AB's won a foreign world cup? This is rugby nirvana. I hope you all get to enjoy this one day.

Hugh Cavills match report first rate and really shows some class re how to win and how to loose. Agree totally. Only add is surprise that no one has mentioned that Foley probably offside at Genias chip that led to try. 50/50 at best and should have been reviewed. Any takers?
