Rugby News from unexpected places

More talk about Pro Rugby in the US. Evidently Rugby International Marketing (RIM) which is the for profit arm of USARugby are set to announce it late this month. They've partnered with Stadium Capital Financing Group and both NBC and RIM mooted Rugby Channel are said to be involved. Evidently there will be a chance it could launch as soon as the US Spring next year but 2017 seems a lot more likely. Will have between 6-8 teams with 'one from Canada likely'. I'd imagine that would be the Ontario Blues.

Sounds promising. Will it be concentrated in a particular area or will teams come from throughout the country?

And will it be genuinely professional? (i.e. players paid enough to make a living from it)

In terms of geographic spread I have no idea. There has been some mention of salaries being similar to Major League Lacrosse which tend to top out at around $25,000 for the top talent. However, the last time this topic came up it was suggested that salaries would range between $25-40,000. Not quite enough to be fully professional but still not too bad to start.

Has been hugely popular here - especially with the success of the German 7s team touring Australia at the moment. There was also a public screening in Hannover I believe (or Hamburg - can't remember exactly)

Also- the guy that made the "rugby for dummies" that has been picked up by Eurosport is the same guy that did the artwork for the team I coached the last two seasons - makes a handy number 7 as well!

German 15s team recently played a trial against French Top 14 side La Roshelle and they are about to tour brazil for a couple of tests against their national side.

Germany will be playing at the Central Coast 7's.

Yep I know - I helped organise some of their stop overs in between Noosa and Sydney .

If you get a chance to watch it , look out for Fabien Heimpel - fantastic flyhalf and 7s player - a real talent. Marvin Deickman as well is another whippet and talent in the German 7s team. All of them have been training almost every day for the last couple of years .

They did well in Noosa. Lost by just 5 points in the semi finals to a NZ development team that included a few of their regular world series players.

Great story and I agree, it is only a matter of time 'till the US take home Bill

Fair bit of time I think. As this generation of high-school kids grows up though, they could at least start to put in a better showing than they did this world cup.

I think they already have the talent to be a top 10 team. They were leading Scotland by 7 points at half time in their match before capitulating in the 2nd half. And they were competitive with both Japan and Samoa. Give them a better coach and they'd be a much stronger team. They've been playing the last 4 years under a guy who's previous experience was as a high school coach and an amateur club coach. Their 7's team has improved out of sight since appointing Mike Friday, I think the same would happen to their 15's team.

An announcement on a US based pro league under the name ProRugby is expected very soon.

Can someone who is across this explain who I should be rooting for? I understand that one of the mobs want to set up a competition that won't release players for international duty outside of world cup years. Fuck those guys.

Supposedly this one is sanctioned by USA Rugby, so don't think there would be issues that way.

I'll believe it when the first ball is kicked.

The group I'm referring to (ProRugby) is the sanctioned league of both USARugby and World Rugby. USARugby's corporate arm (Rugby Int. Marketing) are a major shareholder in the venture so it's not this org. Maybe you're thinking of the NRFL but I've never seen anything about refusing to release players.I know there were murmurs that if players weren't playing in the sanctioned league they wouldn't be considered for national selection.

Well, this has been in the works for sometime. USARugby set up RIM (see above post) around this time last year. They kept it quiet until they had everything set up and contracts signed. I get the impression that they are close.
