Must say that I've never seen so many mishits and edges go for four or six. Boundaries look to be very short to me. Saw one six that went many rows back in the crowd and it was measured at 77m. That particular boundary must be less than 60m.

Also found myself constantly shouting at the TV to pitch the ball up. Why do fast bowlers (and MMarsh's case, medium pace) repeatedly bowl half pitchers at decent batsmen?

On the subject of poor shots going to or over the boundary, after a succession of edges over the keeper's head by McCullum, Smith put two fly slips in place - one was essentially a long stop. As soon as he did, our bowlers attacked leg stump. WTF. Do they not understand the very basics of the game?

Sir Viv's 56-ball ton was at the smallest Test venue in WI & I suspect Misbah's 56-baller was also at a smallish ground. If you're going at 1.8 runs per ball or thereabouts, chances are the boundaries are gonna be on the short side........

Anyhow, here's some highlights:

I had to follow it on flashscores.com.au, hoping someone puts together a ball-by-ball package & sticks it on YouTube.

There are, to borrow an @Pfitzy-ism, screaming fucktards on stuff.co.nz using words like "selfish" & "typically self-indulgent" to describe BMac's innings. Haters gotta hate.............

EDIT: just flicked over to FS2 in time to watch BMac walking out to bat. Next hour gonna be worth recording..........

I watched it live as BMc came injust after I arrived home from morning sport.

To paraphrase Murray Mexted it was pulsating cricket.

Absolutely top class sport, from a guy who is a credit to his sport on and off the field.

How selfish of him to score 145 runs out of 370:confused:
Some reactionaries are going to think dancing down the wicket at 3/51, having come in at 3/37 on the first day of a test match is not the most selfless act in the world.

Haddin might have a ruefull smile at the moment thinking about the hiding he copped for a similar act in South africa.

This time it worked though, and thank goodness for sport and the uncertainties of life.

Journalists. The are the likes of Woodward and Bernstein, and Masters, Dickie, and Dempster. And then there's Buzzfeed. And then that goon on Stuff.nz.

Yup, gotta wonder what the media etc reaction would've been had Pattinson not over-stepped: 99/5 inside 30 overs on Day 1 doesn't look too flash..................

Was gonna have a go at Guptill for getting out again after yet another run-a-ball mini-innings but having seen the catch that got him I'll refrain (until next time he does it :))

The Kiwis inability to take regular wickets agaiant the Australian batting attack costing them again.

Southee once again disappointing. Wasn't even given the second new ball this time.

Well, that was an interesting day's play. Unable to dismiss the Aussie batsmen by other means, the Black Caps engaged in Leg-Side-Theory lite, and in the process just trashed their reputation for being the "good guy" of world cricket. Umpires should have been calling no balls or wides when they persisted 5 or 6 balls per over short and at the batsman or outside leg stump.

Wagner probably should expect some sort of retaliation in the second dig.

Great batting from the boys today. They really applied themselves and have almost got level with plenty of wickets in the shed. I'd really like to see Mitch Marsh spend some time in the middle tomorrow and build an innings. He's doing everything required of him with the ball but as I've said ad nauseum, he's not doing enough with the bat. Tomorrow is the perfect opportunity. The Kiwi's are actually still in this with those two wickets late today. They could end up conceding a lead of 100 or less if they bowl well in the morning and get Voges out early.

Makes a lot of sense when you put it like that.

Have been out all day a hockey gradings so didn't see any play.

As far as I know bowlers are allowed 2 short pitched deliveries which go over shoulder height per over to each batsmen. After that they are no balls. IF the balls aren't going over shoulder height, then they would be wides if they were out of the batsmen's reach when standing in his normal batting position.

My understanding is, that if the short balls aren't over shoulder height, then they aren't covered by the restrictions on short pitched bowling.

Were these deliveries all over shoulder height or just in the rib cage?

^^^^^^^^^ other than the one Smith turned his back on & got hit on the helmet by, mostly waist- to shoulder-height & mostly from Wagner, a left armer, so hardly "body line lite" & as both Smith & Burns were eventually caught behind square a legitimate tactic IMO.

I look forward to your left arm quicks not attacking our right hand batsmen's leg stump in our second dig............

Didn't see it either but the umpires do have the option to penalise bowlers under the ICC standard test regulations if they think negative legside bowling is going on

25.1 Law 25.1 - Judging a Wide - For bowlers whom umpires consider to be bowling down the leg side as a negative tactic, the strict limited over wide interpretation shall be applied.

It's a shame cricinfo don't seem to be carrying the hawkeye coverage for the tests in NZ, with the beehives and pitch maps - makes checking out tactics like this very east to do

^^^^Sounds ike it was more negative bowling rather than intimidatory or dangerous.

The ability to take wickets consistently and thus take 20 wickets has been the Kiwis achilles heel in all tests but Adelaide.

And you're going to get negative bowling when the two batsmen have put on 250. I didn't see too much wrong with it.

As there are no left hand quicks in the team, I guess you'll get your wish.

I am not saying there were any illegitimate tactics, just not really in the spirit of the game and it didn't sit well at all with the supposed whiter than white black caps reputation.
