And of those better Shute Shield 10s, which would train full time for the Waratahs on a supplementary squad contract?

Tayler Adams and Angus Sinclair both played NRC.

Archie King didn't. Not sure if he was part of anyone's broader squad and just didn't get on the field.

Like who?

The big problem we face is that potential Soup players need to be on an intensive training regime. The step up is not so much about skills (although of course skills are enormously important) it is about the hugely increased physicality. Most club rugby backline players are weeds, compared to the Soup counterparts.

You also need to compare like with like.

Mack Mason is a 20 year old on a supplementary contract (below EPS). I'd guess he is lucky to being paid 50k a year.

Of the experienced Shute Shield 10s who might be a better player right now, how many would be keen to take up this sort of position?

Really.... I was at the Wicks vs Wests games on Saturday and I 'm sure wouldn't call some of those backs weeds, particularly comparing to a few of the Waratahs backs I saw on Sunday?

None of those Shute/NRC 10s mentioned are that outstanding IMO, and I doubt would offer anything more than what Mason did.

I actually thought he worked into the game well and looks to have a bit of upside to him.

Oh, sure. There are some fatties around. I was exaggerating to make the point, which seems inarguable to me, that there is a very big physical as well as skills requirement, when it comes to transitioning to full time professional life at the Soup level.

Any player who does not get into the full time track when he leaves school will be a long way behind a couple or more years later.

Please, tell me what is the skills requirement at Super keel?
And why are none of the Tahs backs held to this requirement?

And any player who does not get into a 20's squad, has all but missed the boat..

If that's the test, then oz franchises have failed that test hundreds of times.
@dave beat could almost name a team of ex Marlins players currently on contract O/S

Or someone like this guy.
Brock James (born 22 October 1981 in Victoria, Australia) is an Australian rugby union player currently playing for French club La Rochelle.
James learnt to play Rugby at Old Collegians in South Australia. He represented South Australia at U12, U14 and U16's and first represented Australia in 1997 as an Under 16.
James then moved to attend The Scots College in Sydney and Sydney University, where he was a resident of St. John's College. After a few good seasons in the southern hemisphere, he joined Clermont-Ferrand after Stephen Jones's departure. For his first season, he played every single game with Clermont and became top scorer of the league with 380 points. From 4 January till 28 March 2009, he scored 41 placed kicks in a row,[1]a new record for the Top 14, the old one being Romain Teulet's 35 kicks in a row in 2004–05,[2] and just 3 short of the World Record held by Neil Jenkins.
James has earned caps for Australia U-21 and Australia national sevens team in 2002.
James was ranked #50 in the list 'The 50 best rugby players in the world 2009' by the British newspaper 'The Independent'.[
On 1 January 2016, James makes the switch for Top 14 rivals La Rochelle from the 2016-17 season.

By the same token,he showed nothing to suggest he's outstanding either.
I hope the kid succeeds, but right now I doubt strongly he is better than the guys mentioned.
I'm sure he'll get game time in SS where we can see him go head to head with some of these guys.

Meh. Brock James is a bit like Dan Parks. Good 10s who were much more suited to the NH style of play. James was OK at the Force but never set the world alight.

That said, he'd probably start for the Rebels and Brumbies today. But I wouldn't have him ahead of Cooper, Foley or Lance.
