So when did the number jump to $33 Million or 5.5 per year additional to the rough 5 million wage bill. So the Rebels have cost $50 million of ARU money over 6 years.

The numbers coming from other teams change daily,

Or that Mitchell blew 10 million before the side even started, don't cook the books or your just as bad as the ARU in the first place.

I think I have heard it all and am just going to call BULL.

There's a post on the TWF forum that has some pretty detailed research. However if you write off the $13m loans as the cost of a bungled setup including the moratorium on us signing local players, take into account most other sides received between $12m and $15m over the same period, we are talking about $5m over the past few years. Probably not much different to the ARU top up shortfall over the same period.

We are a dedicated bunch on the TWF forum, one of the members went through the ARU statements bit by bit to find total grants & loans to the Rebels of $33 million (including $13 million written off debt, I got that wrong). This is compared an average of $14 million total for the other squads as well as $15.3 mill to the Force including the sale of the IP & licence.

Regardless, if the Rebels weren't sustainable in 2011, and weren't in 2015, how are they sustainable now, especially considering the grants & loans given to them.

Let's be honest. All teams have had significant financial trouble.

The Reds were bailed out in 2010, the Force in 2016, the Tah's in previous years and the Brumbies are looking like needing one in a couple of years unless their finances massively improve.

This in addition to the massively inequality around spending in the player payments - the Tah's with an extra $2.6 million in 2016. Assuming a similar level historically, then we could be talking around the Tah's getting an extra $15 million on player spend over the past 7 over the Force and the Rebels.

I personally don't think that the decentralised concept works at all for what the ARU are looking for. Either they need to go fully privatised and let the clubs do what they want or they centralise and control all finances and even some elements of game play.

The majority of the $13 million debt was incurred once the ARU took over the running of the franchise, and I would argue the Rebels were given a far greater chance for success than the Force, but we didn't bleed $13 million.

I don't see why the Rebels constantly must get special treatment.

So, Genia is coming home to Australia. Preference remains Queensland but hasn't ruled out any other club.

Given they have three scrummies on the books, I can see two options:

1. Genia finds another club
2. One of the three will be released, probably Tuttle or Pickle.

Tuttle or Pickle might be a handy replacement for Meehan. And, given the social media bromance between mad dog and pickle, it might be another incentive to keep the mad dog in Melbourne. Straws, yes I know I'm clutching, but the internetz allows me to do this.

AFAIK Pickle is out of contract at the end of this season, Tuttle is signed till 2018.

I would rather sign Matt Lucas, who has signaled his intent to move.

I would say you'd get a similar standard of play, for less money and for more games.

Aiming to sign both is definitely not a bad idea though.

Snowden is fine, but I wouldn't consider him in the best 12 Australian based halfbacks, particularly if Genia is back.

And little Red is in awful awful form. Some genuine competition, hopefully accompanied by a coach without any pre-established biases could only help in that regard.

The figures I quoted were extracted from ARU reports, so yeah, they clearly aren't looking at the figures considering they have let the situation slide so far.

I guess I am struggling to see why the ARU are in financial trouble. It was only 2 years ago that we received a massive increase in media rights revenue from $25 million a year to $55 million a year. An extra $30 million per year. Where did that extra money go?

So assuming BLR is right, then the $33 million includes the total grants to the Rebels which is then $19 million higher than the average of the other squads. So it is a massively exaggerated figure.

Assuming that this is since the start of the Rebels, the number clearly doesn't take into account player payments and top ups as then the $19 million difference would easily be eaten up for the Waratahs by their massive top ups.

But yeah, I agree that the Force have been screwed since day one.
