It's only 10's -- so very, very early days -- but A.Ioane has been putting in some solid defensive plays, mostly by holding ball runners up in the tackle to affect the turnover. Lessons from Jedi Master Jerome starting to stick?

I don't think comparing the Tahs playing Pau to the Reds playing the Blues is entirely fair. But maybe we'll see the Waratahs finally live up to expectations.

Well as I suspected the Blues are much better than the Wild Knights, likely putting the Reds on par with the Rebels. We can't easily compare across pools but it's nice to see that the Reds aren't the only team to be thumped by the Blues.

Bloos 47-10 PWK & looking pretty fuckin awesome so far. Of course, being the Bloos & even with the 'nua's finest export onboard, it can't & won't last.......

They got the try, but gotta love that, go backwards 5 meters - 'advantage over'. - _-

For the Reds, the only positive I took from that game were the individual performance of Perese, and even the young prop Hoopert had a solid outing.

I felt that Ready and Daugunu were quite good too. I was also really suprised with how good Jooste is looking.

I actually think most the guys individually played reasonably well. I think they haven't spent much time on the 10's concept and have been focusing on VX's.

The big issues are the tendency to kick when we don't know what to do. Typically that's not too much of an issue with Stewart because his kicking game is so good it'll work out okay. But McDermott particularly, but really the whole side, just too many do nothing kicks. Particularly in 10's it's a recipe for disaster.

Is it just me or do all the Aus sides just look "slow"

Slow to react
Slow as in lacking speed across the team

agreed. Was really impressed with Hoopert. Is he more a TH or LH in proper rugby?

100%. Also very notable, as compared to the NZ teams and probably more obvious in the Reds, is our inability to create space for team mates, or for support players to give options to the ball carrier. It's innate in the NZ teams and very rare in the Oz teams.

i dunno, missed a couple of the matches but thought the Tahs first try vs landers was try of the day. Off the lineout, couple of sharp cut out passes bam, bam, big fella in the corner, perfect drill. Tahs look good god knows how they lost to the landers who looked fairly bereft of ideas and, crucially, pace.

whole tourney seems to have a total "ahh fuckit, just play on" attitude to any marginal forward passes/knock-ons.

Blues looked the goods. Papalii & A.Ioane, woah. Melani Nanai, such a stallion, sheer terror in this format of the game. Eroni Clarke's boy a potential Blues Designated Messiah contender for 2019? Ruru an ENORMOUS halfback but damn he is sharp. If he has any game management wits about him at all at XV's then Pulu should be usurped, as well as Nock.

New England Crusaders, no fucks given

Canes ffs Julian Savea touched it about once across 2 games en route to his $800,000 p/a. Did not want to know.

Pau were absolute bullshit. No way they win a game. Astonished they even scored a try. Vs the Chiefs it was an embarrassing chasm, damage control limitation from opening whistle. Megabucks fatties and too much euro league plop, flop & pant. Frank Halai, wft, 1 million dollars and 1 million croissants later, ffs do these guys have any rules at all on what they eat?. Conrad Smith exasperated and screaming his brains out at everyone at the sheer embarrassment of it all.

Chiefs OMG goddamn terrifying team, where do they keep finding these terrifying huge fast skilled bastards

Could someone post the results or some comments on the Brumbies' games? So far, not a mention either on the front page nor in this thread. Extremely frustrating and disappointing. I'm currently touring in the heart of Victoria, so you will all no doubt understand the lack of information about anything rugby in this neck of the woods.

Day 1 attendance ~11K so obviously it's time to speculate about a move to NZ:

Top of the North is out IMO due to being so close to the Hamilton 7's, I can't see Wellington wanting it, there are major issues with Yarrow Stadium's main stand & I doubt McLean Park (Napier) or Palmy North could handle it from a facilities POV. Similar AMI in Ch'church is probably big enough but doesn't have the amenities which would appear to leave good old Dunners (unless you want more of a carnival atmosphere in which case Queenstown / Wanaka in the South & Taupo in the North become options).

Dismal, apparently Pau are following Toulon's lead of last year and hitting it hard off-field.

WO, word from the funders of this event is that this may well be it's last. At least in QLD

^^^^^ any idea why they scheduled it for Friday & Saturday ? I'd have thought Saturday & Sunday would be better crowd-wise. It would be a shame for Aus to lose it altogether, IMO it's more likely to attract new XV's supporters than 7's does.
