Wow, traditionally that's what you'd expect for an SA team in a bad year, and I wonder if that's a record for the lowest crowd against an Australian opposition....... but even the match in Brisbane was less than 10,000 which was unimaginable in previous years.

The average Australian Soup crowds for this season are going to be dire......... although the Rebels might get a slight bump.

Unsurprising. season on a knife edge, unpopular and under performing coach etc etc and none of the changes the public wanted that would turn the tide of most of Canberra's perception of the Brumbies. Losing the Tahs game on the back of earlier losses has most likely has now lost them the crowds for the rest of the season.

The Canberra sporting public is both fickle (win or we walk) and also intolerant of the politics, powers plays and culture when it comes to its sporting teams. Without some more big changes in the management (Boardroom) and coaching set up, as well as the team performing pretty bloody (winning or playing attacking open rugby) sadly the crowds wont improve too much for the foreseeable future.

All that on top of declining crowds due to a poor product. :(

When will you stop putting your opinion across as factual. Unpopular and underperforming to you please don't put yourself up as speaking for the Brumbies fan base because I know of several that disagree with you and your constant attacks on the organisation and individuals. I get this is an opinion site and you are entitled to yours but please that is all it is, you are not the "public" just a singular member of it.
The Brumbies since their inception have been steeped in politics and power plays this after all is the organisation which has sacked two coaches one whilst winning the competition.
The crowds have been going south now for several years so I find it difficult to blame to the current coach or team. Obviously beating Queensland comprehensively this weekend means nothing to you but losing to the Tahs by 7 points means all is lost.

I was expecting that sort of crowd based on the brumbies form this year. That’s a good turnaround form though, hopefully a few fans will come back.

Also that was probably the best brumbies/reds game that I’ve watched for sometime!

@Chronicle - Fixed. ;)
Unsurprising. season on a knife edge as its unlikely we will get to the finals, even beating the Reds is not really much of a victory considering it puts us on par with them, gives us 50% win loss ratio with a far superior roster and still games behind the other two. Unpopular and under performing coach etc etc and none of the changes the public wanted that would turn the tide of most of Canberra's perception of the Brumbies. Losing the Tahs game on the back of earlier losses has most likely has now lost them the crowds for the rest of the season.

Without some more big changes in the management (Boardroom) and coaching set up, as well as the team performing pretty bloody (winning or playing attacking open rugby) sadly the crowds wont improve too much for the foreseeable future. The 40% decline in memberships since 2015, declining walk up crowds, comments on the Brumbies face book page expressing discontent at the teams performance and at the inabilities of the coaching team. Similar comments and commentary on GAGR, and in other forums from both supporters of the Brumbies and others in the Rugby community who believe and warned the appointment of McKellar would see a drop in performance and as a mistake appear to validate the declining numbers. In the absence of other evidence like poor weather or other events to compete with its hard to find other reasons.

All that on top of declining crowds due to a poor product. :(

I make it a point to avoid watching the Brumbies when they play at home but hardly know why. Speight is an exciting player. Kurindrani. They have some munters in the forwards. I dunno. That raw concrete stadium of theirs, somehow it always looks freezing cold and unpleasant for everyone concerned. Maybe it's the low camera angle. Or the history with their boring rolling mauls. Dont mind watching the other Aus sides but Brumbies, at home, not an attractive viewing proposition

For the other sports, Foxfooty channel quietly having the worst ratings I can remember. AFL games rating under 100k!

This is deeply ironic, considering how wonderful they were in the early days. My wife had never seen top class rugby until we moved back to Australia, she started watching (both club rugby at Eastwood, and SupeRugby) and fell in love with the game in general, and Eastwood and the Brumbies in particular.

We brought her sister out here for a bit of a holiday, she fell in love with Joe Roff!

Crowds have been in decline for some time.

2004 Reds v Waratahs round match drew 42,237

2004 Brumbies v Reds round match drew 24, 017
http://www.austadiums.com/sport/event.php?eventid=1945
2004 Waratahs v Brumbies round match drew 37,832
http://www.austadiums.com/sport/event.php?eventid=1951

If I had the time to go through that website for longer we'd see a steady decline from that point, a steep decline during Hickey/Foley, a rise under Cheika (but really only a significant rise in finals games) and a steady decline since. Not sure about other countries, but in the Australian context, SANZAAR are selling a product that fewer and fewer people want to buy. They remind me of a person running a shop selling carbon paper and wondering why people aren't coming in any more.

I'd be interested if membership statistics were avaialble. Anecdotally, I suspect that Waratah memberships are way down over the past 5 years.

I started the first crowds and tv thread back in 2014, and thought it was bad enough then. The ratings here show that we've had a major recession in Rugby

I can remember when the Friday Night NZ games would regularly hit 90k and the Sat night Tahs/Reds games would hit 180...

In 2011 the Reds were getting 230k a week.

These ratings and crowds are an embarassment, Super Rugby needs a revolution.

EDIT:

I went back and found my original post from 2014. Below is a sample of ratings

Round 2:

Friday: Crusaders v Chiefs 76000

Saturday: Highlanders v Blues 66000

Brumbies v Reds 108000

Sunday: Waratahs v Force 122000

Round 3:

Friday: Blues v Crusaders 63000

Rebels v Cheetahs 108000

Saturday: Chiefs v Highlanders 93000

Waratahs v Reds 150000

This was still not really a strong year for Super Rugby and the ratings blow current ones out of the water :(
